00:04hey guys behind the things we use every single day it turns out there are gigantic machines at
00:11work that we never get to see there are machines that can crush a car in just seconds building
00:16size hydraulic presses capable of exerting up to 80,000 tons of force to machines nearly half
00:23a kilometer long use just to make paper there are even machines the size of a building whose
00:29job is to bake airplane parts as well as giant cranes capable of lifting ship sections weighing
00:34thousands of tons just like assembling Lego here is a lineup of giant factory machines around the
00:41world whose sizes truly defy belief while scrap cars usually have to be dismantled one by one
00:58to separate their parts this particular machine has a much more brutal way of doing it this is
01:04the industrial car shredder a giant crushing machine capable of obliterating an entire car
01:09in just a matter of seconds one of the biggest ones is located in Newport Wales this machine
01:16uses an electric motor with around 9200 horsepower with the weight of the motor alone reaching 40
01:23tons because of this machines massive electricity needs the facility even has to be connected
01:29directly to the national power grid the weight works looks simple but it's quite terrifying used
01:39cars that have been drained of fuel and had their tires removed are fed straight into the machine
01:45inside a series of giant steel hammers spinning at high speed will smash and tear the car into tiny
01:52pieces and the craziest part this machine is claimed to be capable of processing up to 450 cars in an
02:01hour or roughly one car every eight seconds after that the materials are separated by type so that
02:10valuable metals can be recycled and reused so if you ever wondered where thousands of unused old cars go
02:19their journey might just end inside a crushing monster like this
02:38while the previous machine crushed metal this one actually uses immense power to shape gigantic chunks of metal
02:48in Sichuan province China there is a hydraulic forging press of a truly mind-boggling size
02:55this machine stands about 42 meters tall in total with part of its structure buried underground it weighs
03:01over 22 000 tons and the craziest part is this machine can generate a pressing force of up to 80
03:07000 tons
03:11it works by placing a glowing heated lump of metal into the machine after that immense pressure is used
03:18to forge the metal bit by bit until it reaches the required shape and size and what's being forged here
03:25certainly isn't an ordinary component a machine of this scale is used to craft massive metal components
03:31that are difficult or even impossible to forge using ordinary machinery ranging from giant shafts thick
03:38steel rods large diameter metal rings to various heavy duty parts for ships power plants industrial
03:44machinery mining and heavy construction some parts even start out as steel ingots weighing tens to hundreds
03:51of tons while still glowing red hot the metal is continuously rotated and repositioned while the press machine
03:59applies tremendous pressure until it slowly takes the desired shape
04:06a forging process like this isn't just about shaping metal the immense pressure also helps produce
04:11components that are strong and capable of withstanding extreme loads just imagine a machine weighing over
04:1822 000 tons with only one job forging giant chunks of metal into components for the largest machines in the
04:25world
04:39so looking at the final product which is just a sheet of paper it might be hard to imagine that
04:45the machine
04:45used to make it can actually be longer than a large ship on heinan island china there is the heinan
04:51pm2 paper
04:52making machine which stretches an impressive 428 meters in length that's equivalent to more than four
04:59football fields laid out end to end and that entire length is basically a single continuous machine
05:06operating seamlessly the process begins with wood pulp mixed with water the mixture is poured onto a moving
05:17mesh like surface to form a thin sheet then it passes through various rollers that press the water out
05:25after that the paper sheet passes through a series of heated cylinders to remove any remaining moisture
05:31then it's processed further until the surface becomes smooth and has a uniform thickness
05:39what makes this machine even more incredible is its speed the paper sheet can move through the machine
05:45at around 2000 meters per minute in youth while the paper produced is nearly 11 meters wide
05:52at the end of the process the paper is wound into giant rolls that can weigh up to 70 tons
05:59in a single
06:00day this machine is said to be able to produce around 3700 tons of paper that is why machines like
06:07this
06:07are designed to run continuously for months and as much as possible never be turned off
06:14so it turns out that to produce something as thin and light as a sheet of paper humans actually built
06:21a machine
06:21that is almost half a kilometer long
06:37so next up is a machine that works with materials at temperatures over 1200 degrees celsius called a hot strip
06:45rolling mill
06:46this machine is used to turn thick steel slabs into thin steel sheets which are then used to make
06:52all sorts of things from cars household appliances to shipping containers
07:01the process begins with a steel slab that is around 20 to 25 centimeter thick and weighs up to 20
07:07to 30 tons
07:11the steel is first heated until it glows red then fed into a series of giant rollers this is where
07:18quite
07:18an extreme process takes place that hot steel will pass through several rollers exerting thousands of tons
07:24of pressure each time it passes through a roller the steel gets thinner while its speed keeps increasing
07:30from an initial thickness of about 20 to 25 centimeters the steel can ultimately turn into a sheet with a
07:37thickness of only about 2 to 2.3
07:44and this entire process is carried out in a single machine line that can stretch over half a mile long
07:50after exiting the final roller the steel glowing steel sheet passes through a water spray cooling system
07:56before finally being wound into a giant steel coil weighing up to 20 to 30 tons
08:03if you unrolled that coil completely the steel sheet could actually reach over a mile long
08:11so don't be surprised if car bodies refrigerators and even the shipping containers we see every day
08:16originally came from thick steel slabs flattened by giant machines like this
08:37next there's a machine that might look quite simple just like a giant steel drum that keeps
08:42on spinning but without this machine building skyscrapers highways and even bridges might not be as easy as
08:48it is today that machine is a rotary cement kiln a revolving furnace used in the cement manufacturing process
08:58the largest versions can be over 230 meters long with a diameter of more than 6 meters and while in
09:06operation this massive cylinder will keep rotating slowly 24 hours a day materials like limestone clay sand
09:14and iron ore are fed in from one end because the cylinder is positioned at a slight angle and keeps
09:21rotating the materials slowly move toward the other end while being heated the further into the kiln they
09:28go the more extreme the temperature gets reaching over 1400 degrees celsius it's at this temperature that these
09:35materials undergo various chemical reactions ultimately transforming into a material called clinker which
09:41will later be ground to produce cement even though it rotates very slowly its production capacity is
09:48actually extraordinary a single large rotary kiln is said to be able to produce around 10 000 to 12 000
09:56tons of clinker every day because it operates at such extreme temperatures the inside of the kiln must also
10:01be lined with special refractory bricks if this lining is damaged and the heat reaches the steel shell
10:06outside serious damage could occur
10:22ever wondered how a completely flat sheet of steel can turn into a car door hood or roof with such
10:29precise
10:29shapes the answer lies in a machine called the automotive stamping press this is one of the largest
10:36machines in an automotive factory it can be around 25 to 30 meters long about 8 to 10 meters high
10:44and the
10:45entire machine can weigh thousands of tons the way it works is actually pretty easy to understand flat
10:52steel sheets are fed into the machine then stamped using a die with pressure that can reach anywhere from
10:582000 to 5000 to 5000 tons in less than a second the sheet that was once flat instantly transforms into
11:05a panel with all the curves and shapes we recognize as parts of a car body
11:13usually the process doesn't just stop after one press the panel then moves through several stamping
11:19stations some shape the main curves some punch holes and others trim specific sections to create the final
11:26details before the panel is ready to be assembled into a car
11:34in high production factories stamping machines can perform around 12 to 18 strokes
11:40per minute in newt allowing a single body panel to be completed in just a few seconds
11:45the dies themselves must also be made with extremely high precision if the dies shape is off even slightly
11:51the panel surface could become wavy or out of spec and it would ultimately have to be rejected
12:11and lastly there are machines so massive that people standing underneath them look like tiny specks
12:18this is a shipyard gantry crane a colossal gantry crane used in shipyards
12:25cranes like this are commonly found in countries with major shipbuilding industries
12:30like south korea china and japan unlike regular construction cranes a gantry crane stands on two
12:37massive legs that straddle the entire shipbuilding area the entire structure then moves along rails to
12:43lift and carry ship sections from one place to another and the things they lift are anything but
12:49small in modern shipbuilding a ship is usually no longer built piece by piece from the ground up
12:56instead ships are built in giant blocks that already contain various structures pipes cables and other
13:03equipment a single block alone can weigh anywhere from hundreds to thousands of tons these building
13:11sized blocks are then lifted using a gantry crane moved over the ship's hull and then slowly lowered
13:18until they are precisely in their designated positions
13:24remarkably despite carrying loads weighing thousands of tons the operators must be able to place them with
13:29an extremely high level of precision one famous example is the goliath crane at the harland and wolf
13:36shipyard in belfast standing around 96 meters tall and capable of lifting loads of up to 840 tons
13:58so that was the lineup of giant factory machines in the world whose sizes are truly mind-boggling i hope
