The limestone enclosure surrounding the Great Sphinx displays deep vertical weathering channels caused by heavy, continuous rainfall. Because the Giza Plateau has been an arid desert for over 5,000 years, geologists suggest the core body of the Sphinx was carved during the end of the last Ice Age.
