Kenneth Branagh embraces action hero role — to get in shape

British actor Kenneth Branagh embraces an unexpected action hero role in the Cold War comedy "Mayday," starring alongside Ryan Reynolds as former KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov. "It was a great chance to get a little fitter," the 65-year-old says, saying the action sequences also allowed him to surprise audiences with his eccentric Russian character.

00:00When he was 15 years old, he told me that you went to his community.
00:04So I wanted to start asking you, what did you think when you read the script?
00:10Stuff with you, like, in all this training, or after that you keep doing to incorporate anything to your life
00:17from that?
00:17A lot of you.
00:18That's unthinkable to do.
00:20Kicking that much.
00:22And so, how was for you that training?
00:26I don't know, like, how did...
00:30I'm always excited and surprised when people think of something that they haven't seen me in before,
00:36that they think maybe I could bring something new to.
00:38That is really exciting, because you feel as though that has an energy behind it.
00:41These two filmmakers seem to have that for me in this, and I really benefited from it.
00:47It was a joy from start to finish.
00:48So if you can feel...
00:50I did think about the impact of exile on Nikolai,
00:55and how, when you live a long time in the woods, in the snow, and out of company with people,
01:02it will change you in ways that mean, like misery, that when a stranger comes in, company arrives,
01:09you are rather overwhelming in your need to be speaking with them.
01:13Hence, some of the comedy that we get out of Nikolai quizzing Troy about Top Gun.
01:20And from a personal point of view, it was a great chance to get a little fitter.
01:24You had to arrive early and practice and learn it like a dance and try not to get hurt or
01:29hit anybody else.
01:30But know that it was character revealing, that this action was part of telling the audience who Nikolai was and
01:36surprising them.
01:38I'm glad that you were surprised.
01:39I was surprised in reading it, and I knew that I wanted to help surprise the audience by just letting
01:44them know that they maybe had underestimated this funny, eccentric Russian character.
01:50And I think the filmmakers knew that and used it to their advantage.
01:54So when we had our very first conversation, they just called action on a costume test for him.
01:59He walked off the set, or I walked to him actually, so we shook hands in front of the camera.
02:02And we just started a conversation which hasn't really stopped.
02:07Two directors?
02:07I loved having two directors.
02:09They always had an answer.
02:11You were never, never having the director say, I don't know, because one of them sort of claimed that he
02:17didn't, the other one did.
02:19They were those kinds of people who finished each other's sentences.
02:23Both highly intelligent and both sort of equally gifted and sort of equally skilled in terms of what they were
02:32interested in, the filmmaking or the script.
02:34They were both interested in both.
02:54them.
02:55They were children about the tribe.
02:56And theямitz increase.
03:00They reallyوا kinnis.
03:00All that's the kind of favourite issues covered by kids.
03:01Look at those names, they identify them, so theyか Arcata and spear 들어가 over the show.
03:01They trigger someone with the number of people serving, so that they cannot have 1951 farmers, so that they can
03:01react to the groundament parts of the money.
03:01But no one thing kept happening there, they're too many people delusion, they couldn't use our society.
