00:00uh diego this is honestly i think the strongest thing that that star wars has done since disney
00:04has acquired it it has blown me away uh and uh i'm so happy for you i hope you're proud

00:11work you guys have done oh man you almost make me cry it's incredible for those words
00:26when you wrapped rogue one did you have any indication that and or was a possibility or did
00:32you say goodbye to the character uh at that time i said goodbye to the character to the universe to
00:37the experience to everything man i you know one thing that made like sense to me is that i was
00:44coming to do our film in the universe of star wars but a film that had a beginning and an
00:49end sure
00:51it was pitched as as a standalone to me you know this is it you come you do this you're
00:58in and out
00:58you're allowed to be different uh you're supposed to be different uh but this is it this is it you
01:05know uh and in fact it was easy to digest you know uh i was like everyone was asking me
01:12like oh so
01:13you're gonna be there forever is that the future and i was like no no no i'm doing this that's
01:19it
01:19right uh and uh and my character has a pretty dramatic and and definitive end you know uh
01:27that's it as uh it's the end in its most pure form basically yes uh and then a year later
01:37i got this
01:37phone call saying do you would you be willing to explore the possibility of doing a show in this
01:44new long format that uh that we're we're doing now of of the background of cassian and and to see
01:50where
01:51he comes from and what happened what what needed to happen for him to become that person that was
01:56willing to sacrifice everything for the cause you know and i i was like wow that's a a bold idea
02:02i mean
02:02it's interesting you know uh as as it was when i got the offer for for for row one you
02:08know because
02:09it's again it's another standalone in the world of series this one has to end we know the ending
02:16they will have to change the name uh if they wanted to keep going because andrew is i mean that's
02:22it
02:22it's these five years and there's nowhere to go what really bleeds through for me as part of this
02:28production is the enormous practicality of the universe it feels so much more lived in uh and
02:34just like it's been extremely established and i'm wondering if that felt uh that way to you on set as
02:41well too as you're working on this absolutely i'm an i'm an actor we love a space to play in
02:48and i love
02:50a tactile space to play in we had it in rogue one and now in luke hull's design in andor
02:56we have
02:59these dexterous intricate beautiful sets to inhabit you know in the first time you meet mon mothma
03:07in episode four you meet her in luthan's gallery that set was jaw-droppingly beautiful
03:16stalin and i were like kids in a playground we were like look at this look at this we're like
03:22don't
03:22touch that one that looks breakable oh what about this one can i sit in this like it was
03:26a joy to play in luke's sets i sort of assumed because it's science fiction i sort of assumed
03:34there's a lot of green screen it will all be you know and then i got to like one of
03:39my first days
03:40was on this in this like town that they built and i was walking around thinking oh my god this
03:46is
03:46amazing the attention to detail and there was like a little it looked like yo sushi but in space you
03:52know and i thought okay well let me have a look in the cupboards i mean i'm sure in the
03:57cupboards
03:57there'll be like lighting and all of that and actually you open the cupboards and there's you know
04:03bowls and bowls full of blue noodles and you go into the bar area and it's all built it's like
04:10when you're a kid and you have to use your imagination to build these things and then you
04:15get to be you know 40 and walking around dressed up in an imperial officer's uniform on a set that
04:22has been built for you to play on i mean it was absolutely it's yeah it's mind-blowing the attention
04:28what they did to detail and the intricacy of the sets yeah props the costumes were like
04:34nothing i or you had ever experienced it was incredible i need to sing the praises of toby haynes
04:40i just want to give him all of the star wars going forward um can you tell me what he's
04:45like as a
04:45collaborator he's blowing me away with what he's doing oh he's he's incredible um yeah he was he's
04:51he was amazing to work with he was so much fun um he had this this really intriguing
04:58energy about him which was really was infectious and contagious was he he is himself a fan so he
05:05would get really excited about the props and i mean we all did because you're the second you walk into
05:11a star wars set your stomach sort of drops and you're like oh my god i'm i'm in star wars
05:16um and
05:18you know that you're being a part of something so much bigger than you and toby had that every single
05:23day like there wasn't a day that he wasn't oh my god this is amazing this is so cool and
05:27i think
05:27you could see in his approach to every scene i think he approaches every scene with fresh eyes
05:33and i think he really just wants to do a great job for the fans because he is a fan
05:39um and i think he
05:42he pushes every time a little bit i mean as a collaborator is beautiful to work with he's really
05:48inspiring he's he just he said this wonderful thing um when there was another character was
05:53trying to like do things in a different way and toby was just like kind of feeding him different ways
05:58of doing it just keeping the camera rolling the guy was kind of like okay okay okay and they cut
06:03it he's like don't worry about it we're just trying to capture smoke here that's all we're trying to
06:06do right and i was like that's so beautiful and he has this playfulness and he's like a kid yeah
06:12yeah yeah artistry like directing something like this mostly it's the same with ben karen who i did
06:18my early stuff with and i remember thinking oh my god he's having such a good time he's like are
06:23you
06:23kidding me look what i get to play with like yeah really we were very lucky we are meant to
06:29be different
06:30we are meant to be our own and and that i love you know because then the writing of someone
06:37like tony
06:37gilroy uh becomes like so uh pertinent you know you need someone like him you need someone like
06:47he's not a writer that likes to write in in terms of right and wrong and black and white he
06:53lives in
06:54the gray areas you know right he spends his time there building layers and layers of of contradictions
07:03and uh and i think that's that's yeah interesting and and comes in the right time into this universe
07:10of star wars i think too i love that i got the opportunity to come and investigate this woman
07:17to explore this woman um i love that tony gilroy and disney have invested time and narrative space
07:26in this woman um i think where we meet her in and or is very different to where we've ever
07:34seen her
07:34before you know we usually see her in a bunker you know with senators in a war zone where we
07:43meet
07:43her in and or she is navigating a political society the imperial senate she's steeped in empire
07:54i think what's exciting for audiences hopefully is that we start somewhere so very different to
08:01where we know we have to end up what were some of the questions that you might have had about
08:06bix's
08:06backstory uh and were they answered i sat down with diego and we had so many ideas and what sort
08:13of our
08:13backgrounds were and and specifically how we met and stuff and those were all ideas that we had with
08:19tony again not in the show but it was incredibly important for us to know especially for someone
08:25like diego who's lived in this character for for years now and is so aware of you know where he
08:32comes
08:33from and and sort of his background hence why they're doing a show about it um so it was really
08:38interesting to have him on set and i just felt like i could ask him sort of everything and anything
08:45and and he was incredibly helpful and collaborative in that kyle i really uh i sort of view your
08:51character and diego's as two sides of a very similar coin um and i'm really enjoying seeing the um the
08:58parallels between their journeys and i'm kind of wondering if you think that maybe karn could have
09:02easily committed to the rebellion uh had fate almost sent him down a different path definitely yes
09:07that's that's that's one of the things that i was thinking about while developing the character with tony is
09:13that there was clearly a point and i i think it exists for everybody right but clearly a point
09:18for cyril where there was a choice to be made and he lent over onto the left side and um
09:25we think it's
09:26because both dedra and cyril have an aversion to dirt and like they need everything to be perfect and
09:32clean and the rebels just simply it's too dirty yeah yeah yeah not tidy not tidy enough i can understand
09:38that
09:38so within within you know cyril's journey he he becomes so fixated and obsessed with cassie because
09:46he recognizes that that is that potential could exist within himself and that this guy who's so free to
09:53just do what he wants and cyril lives within the confines of his own structure and the structure of
10:00the bureaucratic corporate system that he lives in and is striving to ascend up to the highest echelons of
10:07he sees this person just like making up the rules as he goes along and he just can't stand it
10:13yeah
10:14but it's because as you say he it's the other side of his coin and that's yeah can't deal with
10:19it
10:19i just want to know your pro tip for acting uh opposite a droid could you do it very well
10:26this droid made it so easily and i i have to tell you that the work behind the droid
10:32it's incredible it's not one or two people it's a whole team you know from the moment they decided
10:38to the how expressive it is you know like i saw the process i saw the drawings then i saw
10:44the first
10:45models then i saw the thing moving and then i saw the whole team giving life to that thing you
10:50know
10:50because it's not just a voice it's someone it's two people operating you know and and how many people
10:57were needed to construct to build that i don't know but uh it's a whole team and uh and v2
11:04it
11:04just follows you everywhere and it's it's there it's real you know it's like it's in fact very easy to
11:11interact with with with these droids because they exist you know yeah they're there with you uh and
11:18they're not as demanding as other actors you know they can do one take after another do you know
11:24what i love star wars fans because they are so passionate they are so lived in in regard to this
11:32experience so i let them do all the thinking and the speculating and i leave that up to them because
11:38they do it much better than i do and i will just step in as the actor because in the
11:45end i feel like star
11:46wars fans know much more than i do i just hope that my um my excavation of mon mothma can
11:55live up to
11:56their high standards that's what a reckoning sounds like
