During the trip she barely spoke, only responding with yes or no, and no matter how he tried, he could never see her face clearly. Before reaching El Hongo, she asked to stop at an abandoned gas station to use the bathroom—then disappeared behind a nearby bush. But when she went out of sight, a sudden, icy, brutal wind surged in, cutting the air with unnatural cold. When she didn’t return, he searched and found nothing… and then the truck door slammed shut violently from where she had been sitting, confirming the nightmare wasn’t over. Afterward, coworkers told him he must have boarded the ghost freight said to appear on the Rumorosa—the chilling “phantom truck” that returns like clockwork. The story turns even darker the next year, when my uncle died from a heart attack around the same time.
