02:17This afternoon, President Trump and I met at Gracie Manchin to discuss the city we both
02:22are so fortunate to serve, New York City.
02:25Each time the president and I speak, it is about the same topics.
02:29How to improve the lives of New Yorkers and how to use the power of government to take
02:34on the cost of living crisis, to grow our economy, and to build a better, stronger New York.
02:40Each day, millions of New Yorkers struggle to get by in a city where a decent life costs
02:45too much, where a future of possibility and prosperity feels forever just one paycheck
02:50out of reach, where dignity is not accorded to all, but only afforded by some.
02:56I have said time and again that I will work with anyone, no matter what party they belong
03:00to, no matter how much we may disagree on other topics, whoever has the power and the
03:05will to lift that weight off New Yorkers' backs.
03:07And at a time where hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are asking the questions of
03:13how they can afford this city, I appreciate the conversation that the president and I
03:18have had on the subject of how we can make it easier to afford life in this great city
03:23that we call our home.
03:25With that, we will take questions just before.

03:32I've been at Gracie Mansion, we were discussing quite a few times over the years, a lot.
03:36And it sort of feels like a home.
03:39And it's a special place, a very special, a beautiful place when you go inside.
03:45And I've seen it with numerous different mayors.
03:47And I said some great ones and some not so great ones.
03:50So hopefully you're going to be a great one.
03:52I'll be able to say you're going to be a great one.
03:54And you're off to a start.
03:55So I just want to thank the mayor for the invitation.
03:59I'm in New York to do the United Nations tomorrow.
04:02I have a lot of meetings right now, today.
04:04Very important meetings with heads of different countries.
04:08But this is like a little bit of old home week for me because so many things, we've done
04:13so many things from the beautiful home or house or building standing right behind me.

04:30Mr. President, Mr. Mayor, there aren't too many Democrats who would roll out the red carpet
04:34for Donald Trump.
04:35You did that today.
04:37What tangible results, achievements could you point to from your relationship with the
04:43President?
04:45You know, one of the focuses of the conversation the President and I have been having is about
04:51the possibility of building more housing here in New York City.
04:54We've spoken about Sunnyside Yard.
04:55And it's a real pleasure that just today we've agreed to set up a new level of that conversation
05:02between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team, because
05:07what we're speaking about is 12,000 homes, 30,000 jobs, the prospect of an entire new
05:13neighborhood in a city where housing is the number one cost.
05:16And I appreciate the President, his interest in this.
05:20And we also know the President not just as the leader of the country, but also as someone
05:25who has built quite a lot of housing here in our city.
05:26I don't know, Mr. President, you want to add anything?
05:28Well, I can tell you that Sunnyside's a big job.
05:31I've been watching that for 35 years.
05:34Everybody's wanted to do something with Sunnyside Yards.
05:37Well, we met at the White House a couple of times, but we met at the White House.
05:41The mayor brought that up, the possibility of doing Sunnyside Yards.
05:45It's a very, I would say that was a very federal-oriented job.
05:50You're going to need a lot of federal approvals and probably some federal money to do it.
05:54But it's always been a great location.
05:56I owned a building in Sunnyside.
05:58It was a great building.
05:59I know it very well.
06:00So when he mentioned Sunnyside Yards, they've been talking about developing that for 50 years.
06:04So maybe they have a shot at doing it.

06:16Mr. Mayor, Mr. President, this is the first time that a sitting president has visited Gracie
06:22Mansion in decades.
06:23Mr. President, on the way here, you posted that this is one of your favorite places in
06:27the world.
06:28Why is that?
06:29And, Mr. Mayor, what did you show the president?
06:31What did you want to see?
06:32Well, I can say from my standpoint, I love New York, and this represents New York.
06:37This is where the mayor lived and continues to live.
06:41And we were discussing it a long time ago when you first got elected.
06:45I said, well, you're going to move because you were maybe having some doubts about moving
06:49him because it is a little bit on the luxurious side.
06:51And I said, when you're the mayor, you have to live there.
06:55So, and he's done that.
06:57And it was very nice inside, beautifully kept.
07:00And it's a very, very representative place of New York, very important place.
07:08You know, we appreciate the president's commitment to the city.
07:11And today, you know, the president shared many of his memories of having been to Gracie
07:17Mansion before, having been out here as well on the lawn.
07:21And we appreciated the conversation of how we can work together to deliver a lower cost
07:26of living for New Yorkers.

07:32So, Mr. President, you spoke about Sunnyside Yards.
07:35Are you committing to supporting that project?
07:38And it sounds like you also talked about affordability.
07:42You have dismissed that in the past.
07:45But that is one of Mayor Mamdani's key agenda items.
07:49So, did you talk about affordability?
07:51And did you, is there anything you can do for affordability for New Yorkers?
07:56Well, I know a lot about affordability because I did that housing.
08:00I did many, many low-income and moderate-income buildings over the years and had great success
08:07with it.
08:07We have, we really were, it was very important.
08:10I would think that Sunnyside would have to have a component, at least a pretty substantial
08:15component of exactly that.
08:17So, yeah, we discussed that.
08:19If, if you do Sunnyside, I think you're going to have to have that kind of a component.

12:15On your second question, as the president said, I shared my very strong opinions about how we can keep New
12:22Yorkers safe, how we can keep immigrant New Yorkers safe, and how important immigrant New Yorkers, especially Haitian New Yorkers,
12:27are not only to the fabric of our city, but also to our city's economy, to so many of the
12:31industries that build our city and the stability that is in the president's hands.
12:36And I appreciate the conversation that we had and the consideration to that end.
12:40And you had your third question for the president.
12:43No, I certainly hope he will be a great mayor.
12:46You have to understand, I want what's good for New York.
12:49I want what's good for the country.
12:50So if I had a choice of having him be a bad mayor or horrible mayor, I don't want that.
12:56I want him to be a great mayor.
12:57And he's certainly got potential, got great potential.
