Hannibal — How He Shocked Rome With War Elephants

Hannibal's decision to invade Italy across the Alps was extraordinary. His army included 37 elephants at the beginning of the campaign, although many were lost during the difficult crossing.

The surviving elephants later took part in Hannibal's early victories in Italy.
