00:10Agricultural graduate Subrat Mohanty has defied Odisha's heat to grow colorful
00:15Asiatic lilies without soil.
00:21I wanted to experiment with these beautiful flowers. Since Odisha's
00:26climate is too hot for lilies I created conditions similar to Kashmir using an
00:30air conditioner and a humidifier. An alumnus of Odisha University of Agriculture
00:36and Technology Subrat converted a room in his house into a controlled
00:41cultivation chamber. He maintains the temperature between 2 and 7 degrees
00:46Celsius allowing lilies normally associated with colder regions to bloom
00:51in the coastal city. Instead of conventional soil he uses a
00:55hydroponic system involving nutrient-rich water and cocopeat. Several experts had
01:01warned him that lilies would not thrive in Odisha's climate or respond well to
01:06soilless cultivation but Subrat continued with his experiments.
01:11Some also doubted whether hydroponics could produce the same results as soil but I
01:19followed science and proved that it could be done.
01:22The experiment could also offer a new commercial opportunity. Lilies, primarily
01:27cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir sell for around Rs. 200
01:32to Rs. 500 in Odisha.
01:37Cultivation in a 200 square feet space can generate up to 17 lakhs annually through 3 or
01:444 production cycles. A grower can earn nearly 2 lakhs in one season.
01:50Sustainability is also central to Subrat's method. Instead of drawing water from an external
01:56source, he collects and reuses water discharged by air conditioners. After leaving his job due
02:02to unavoidable circumstances, Subrat chose not to remain idle. Supported by his wife and
02:08two daughters, he turned his agricultural knowledge into an unusual venture.
02:15I always wanted to do something new. My daughters help me with the cultivation and my entire family
02:22supports me. With science and technology, even something that appears impossible can be achieved.
02:29Standing amid a riot of colourful blooms, Subrat has shown how innovation can bring a little
02:34piece of Kashmir to the heart of Bhubaneshwar.
