Before gargoyles became famous Gothic architectural decorations, French legend told of a terrifying dragon-like creature called the Gargouille.
One medieval tradition connects the creature with Saint Romanus and the city of Rouen. Later, monstrous stone figures became part of Gothic architecture, while their open mouths also helped channel rainwater away from buildings.
