00:13Grazie a tutti
00:31Sicily, island of legend, of mountains and the mafia, an island of flowers and orange groves and abiding tradition.
00:38But Sicily is also the home of the very last of the world's truly heroic motor races.
00:43The legendary Targa Florio run every spring over these mountain roads.
00:48The names of past winners read like a roll of honor of the sport.
00:52Divo, Vazzi, Villoresi, Biondetti, Taruffi, Moss, and perhaps the greatest of them all, Tazio Nuvolari.
01:05May the 4th, 1965. Five days to go, and the Naples Ferry arrives at Palermo.
01:11On board, the leading contenders for honors in the 49th Targa Florio.
01:22Monte Carlo rally winner Timo Makenen has this Healy 3000.
01:26There's an MG Midget for Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges.
01:37A prototype Healy Sprite for Altonen and Baker completes the BMC contingent.
01:43Porsche always do well in the Targa.
01:46A Sunbeam Tiger for Peter Harper and the Reverend Rupert Jones.
01:49And, of course, Ferrari are here.
02:00Soon, the mountain roads reverberate to the signs of unofficial practice,
02:04for which most of the works teams have brought spare cars.
02:16But for others, a long-suffering hired hack must serve.
02:32A lot of rubber is left behind, and there's some private dicing,
02:35despite the fact that the roads are still open to normal traffic.
02:41Scrutineering is at Cerda, about 10 kilometers beyond the start.
02:46That's Rano Altonen.
02:49The Ford GT, immaculately prepared for Bondurant and Whitmore, attracts attention.
02:57The regulations, by the way, demand a minimum turning circle.
03:02Abart are well represented,
03:04and, of course, the entry list is rich in assorted Alphids.
03:09Peter Harper has trouble finding the Tiger's splinter-proof label for the scrutineers,
03:13but, on the whole, the proceedings are conducted with a charming informality.
03:24Paul Hawkins, Markkinen's co-driver, is in prayerful mood.
03:28But, for Timo, the prospect of his first Targa seems to please.
03:33Kampucci, winner in 1964, with Hushka von Hennstein,
03:37and from Britain, well, the face is familiar.
03:40Mike Parks, a Ferrari, checks sprite development with Jeff Healy,
03:44and Joe Bonnier hopes for his third win.
03:49That's it, all done?
03:50All fine.
03:51Nobody is allowed to spoil the finish of the Ford with common paint,
03:55and, while the scrutineering goes on,
03:57Tommy Wisdom, himself a Targa veteran,
03:59has a word or two in English with Timo Markkinen.
04:02Now, Timo, you've come to the Targa Florio,
04:05your first Targa Florio.
04:06Why have you come?
04:07Oh, it's lovely weather.
04:09Well, that's a jolly good answer.
04:10Now, what do you think of the course?
04:12Oh, it's a very nice course, but very difficult to learn.
04:16Yes, and you're pleased with the car?
04:18Oh, not really very bumpy, sir.
04:19The work is very hard.
04:21Yes, what about cars?
04:22Oh, you're using a lot of cars.
04:24After every two laps, I think we must change.
04:27I say, that's going to be hard work.
04:28It means you've got to go pretty quickly.
04:30Well, jolly good luck, anyhow.
04:31Thank you.
04:32It's Timo who drives our camera around the 45-mile circuit.
04:36From the start, an easy climb to the village of Czerda.
04:51BMC put their trust for the Targa in rally driver's hands,
04:55so Timo is an obvious choice.
04:57He takes Czerda with discretion.
04:59The roads are open.
05:07Now, he's climbed to the heights above the village
05:10and the downhill stretch to the valley of the river Salito begins.
05:25But what do other drivers think about this circuit
05:28with its 295 corners every lap?
05:31Of course, it's important to just know what goes on around the next corner
05:36and you get all sorts of people going very quickly here.
05:46It's a very deflating circuit.
05:48I think it's good to come here once a year
05:50and get your balance, sense of proportion correct.
05:54Otherwise, you might think you're a lot better than you are.
05:59Graham Hill is to drive a prototype Porsche with Joe Bonnier.
06:03Team manager Von Henstein talks about it.
06:05Yes, and unfortunately, it's a little bit too new,
06:08but it seems to be the fate of all manufacturers
06:11that they only get their new cars ready at the very last minute.
06:15And so it happened with this car,
06:17which has only been completed the night before we left,
06:20so we don't know much about it.
06:23We had some similar cars test-driven,
06:25but of course not on a circuit like this
06:28and not on conditions like here.
06:42I always liked the pure road races.
06:47I used to love the millimillion,
06:49but of course that doesn't exist anymore.
06:50How many times have you driven in the Targo?
06:53Six times.
06:54This is my seventh time.
06:55I say, how many times have you won?
06:58I won it twice.
07:00And placings?
07:01Well, let's see now.
07:02I've finished, actually, out of the six times I've driven here,
07:06I've finished four times.
07:07And I won it twice.
07:08I've finished second ones, and I've finished third ones.
07:11How do you rate your chances this time?
07:13Well, I hope we win.
07:15Next, Tommy Wisdom speaks to Ludovico Scaffiotti,
07:19Italian Victor of Le Mans, 1963.
07:22Compare with those other races which you've engaged in.
07:27It's very interesting, like races.
07:31You remain only this after the millimillion.
07:34It's, I would say, a race in the street.
07:38Like millimillion, little millimillion.
07:40I like very much this, which is very, very, very hard,
07:44because it's very stankante, fatigous, I don't know what I say.
07:47Yes, fatiguing indeed.
07:49That's the Targa Florio.
07:54By now, Timo is driving up to the heights by Caltavatura,
07:58the highest part of the course and about 28 kilometers out.
08:02Here, he sweeps left down the road built specially by Mussolini
08:06for the Targa, then it's down the side of the mountains
08:09to the Imara Valley.
08:47I think it's very much like a rally.
08:49It's like a series of special stages in the Alps.
08:52It's fabulous.
08:53I'll enjoy it whether we finish high up or not.
08:55It's good fun.
09:07Timo's hammering hard,
09:08and it's as well to remember that the roads aren't closed,
09:12even when under pressure from a works Ferrari.
09:32It's, I reckon, it's the toughest race in existence in the world
09:37for the motor car and for the driver
09:41because the concentration which you require
09:44for driving around this circuit is incredible.
09:48There's no relax, no moment of relaxation whatsoever.
09:52You've got to be absolutely 100% on the ball all the time.
09:56I like the challenge.
09:58The more difficult it is, the more I enjoy it.
10:00We have a special set of gearbox ratios for the cars
10:03where first, second, third, and fourth are all very close together
10:06for rushing around the mountains.
10:09And then on the one six-kilometer straight,
10:12we have a, what's the equivalent of an overdrive top?
10:15And you pop the thing in the top,
10:16you have to rush down there at something like 175 miles.
10:20You're doing 175, are you, I'm not sure.
10:23One straight on the course.
10:25It's six kilometers of dead straight,
10:26and we get out to that next speed.
10:31And so to official practice.
10:33Tommy Wisdom is in the pits finding out what's what
10:35and telling the boys, no doubt,
10:37of his Jaguar experiences here in 1953.
10:45Lorenzo Bandini, winner of Le Mans in 1963,
10:49talks with his co-driver of that occasion,
10:51Ludovico Scafiotti.
10:53This time, Bandini is to share with Nino Baccarella,
10:56Scafiotti with Mike Parks.
10:58And so, practice begins.
11:06Timo demonstrates his particular recipe for saving the tires.
11:10Keep them airborne.
11:30Timo demonstrates his particular recipe for saving the tires.
11:33in starting positions,
11:34but most people try like mad.
11:37The Pucci Porsche is the only practice casualty,
11:41crashed by Viannini without personal injury.
11:43But it isn't the end of Pucci's race,
11:45for he is to move in with class on another of the works cars,
11:49number 94.
11:58The new Porsche is causing bother.
12:01Neither Graham Hill nor Joe Bonni are like its handling
12:03and opt to drive an eight-cylinder,
12:06leaving number 182 to Colin Davis and Gerhard Mitter.
12:12Paul Hawkins puts up a good practice time in the big healy,
12:16but there's nobody to touch Sicilian-born Nino Baccarella
12:19in the 275 P2 Ferrari.
12:22He's a schoolmaster in Palermo,
12:24the popular hero.
12:29Local knowledge is a tremendous advantage
12:32on a circuit as long as this.
12:34Listen to his teammate, Ludovico Scafiotti.
12:37You know Baccarella, you know,
12:39every day when he come here to do a bath in the sea,
12:43he goes to do a lap in the Targa Flora.
12:45Yes, very, very quick, very, very.
12:47It's not easy to do the same time.
12:51Yes, not very easy to beat,
12:53for Baccarella has just become the first man ever
12:55to better 40 minutes for the 45-mile Piccolo-Madoni circuit,
13:00and very hot work it seems to have been.
13:03As race morning approaches,
13:04the road men complete their token gestures,
13:07the enthusiasts have decorated the circuit,
13:09and the drivers have added some road signs of their own,
13:12which can't be found in any highway code.
13:18Posters urge the populace to good race behaviour,
13:22to keep dogs indoors,
13:23to sit inside the bends.
13:25and here's one which could well be translated as
13:28lock up your daughters.
13:30So, to the dawn of race day,
13:32and all around the circuit,
13:34people are early awake.
13:38At the grandstand,
13:40the turnstiles click,
13:41although most sensible Sicilians
13:43see the show for nothing.
13:45The pre-start atmosphere comes up with the song.
13:47It's Targaflorio Day.
14:07The 59 cars line up in order of departure.
14:11Smallest first, 30 seconds between each.
14:13Before them, 10 laps, 450 miles,
14:17of one of the toughest racing circuits in the world.
14:20There's Peter Harper in Tigrish mood,
14:22and Joe Bonnier in the souvenir business.
14:24The marshal's late return
14:26delays the start due at 8 a.m.
14:28by 12 minutes.
14:32Jeff Healy, suitably dressed for the occasion,
14:35gets the Sprite ready for Altonen.
14:38And there's Bandini,
14:39debonair as ever,
14:40as the tension mounts.
14:47Now, the first car of the 1300cc GT class
14:51is on the line.
14:51There's just 30 seconds to go.
14:54It's the Giodar Alpine.
15:02The Petruzzi Porro Alfa TZ.
15:07Bajillio in a works A-Bart.
15:13Paddy Hopkirk in the MG Midget.
15:20Denet's due to lead the 1300 GT class on lap one
15:24and to crash on lap two.
15:26The Bucinella Todara Alfa.
15:30Another TZ, Bianchi Roland.
15:33Class and the Porsche 904.
15:37Timo Makkinen.
15:43Ferrari GTO, Pugaccio.
15:48Before the prototypes are away,
15:50the early numbers are storming through Czerda,
15:52awakening the early morning village echoes.
15:55The Kalascibeto
15:56the Bajillio A-Bart is going great guns.
15:59It passes 11 cars on the first lap.
16:18Back at the pits,
16:20the prototypes are on the line.
16:21Altonen in the Sprite.
16:26Gio Bonia.
16:30Conin Davis.
16:33The Ford, Bondurian piloting.
16:40Maccarella.
16:48Partito Scarpioti.
16:54Now, the big bangers are chasing the small cars hard
16:57and the race is really on.
17:02The Alpine of Bonrieu chez Nice.
17:11Paddy's going well
17:12and really trying.
17:2520 kilometres out now,
17:27down into the river valley
17:28and up the other side.
17:30That's the Hermancella A-Bart.
17:34Maglioli is in Porsche number 176.
17:40On 96 is the works Ferrari of Biscaldi.
17:43Up on the Cultivatura Heights now
17:46and the multiple echoes from the mountains
17:47add to the din.
17:49You can hear a car
17:50ten kilometres up the road.
18:02Now, trouble begins.
18:04The Topetti Grana 275 LM buckles a wheel.
18:07The car, incidentally,
18:08was homologated only in Italy.
18:11This incident takes 15 minutes to sort out,
18:13but it gets going again.
18:15Chenice isn't so lucky
18:16in his work's alpine.
18:18For him, the race is over.
18:20And coming up,
18:21the only time you'll see number 112,
18:24the Ulysses Marchese GTO,
18:26in mint condition.
18:3494 is the Pucci-class Porsche 904 again.
18:41Here's Paddy Hopkirk
18:43on his way up to Vivio Polizzi,
18:4538 kilometres out,
18:46and here's Timo.
18:49Guichet in the third P2.
18:56Colisano,
18:57a typical sleepy Sicilian village a week ago,
19:00now just a part of a racing circuit.
19:07In the Targa,
19:08many drivers cloak themselves in anonymity.
19:11Believe it or not,
19:12that Alfa is driven by
19:13Ben-Hur and the Tortoise.
19:24On to the straight,
19:25and it's almost the end of lap one.
19:28A maroon is fired
19:29as each car nears the pit area.
19:33It signs for the Vigilio Eibart,
19:36first on the road.
19:53Magnoli, sixth overall.
20:02Magnoli, sixth overall.
20:09La ford, 3rd.
20:12Vaccarella's time, 40 minutes, 5 seconds from a standing start.
20:16Only 4.7 seconds outside Villi-Meress' existing record.
20:33The Sicilians treat their motor racing in gala fashion, but they take it no less seriously for all that.
20:39It's the big day out in the year, and not even an angry Ferrari can cut the supply lines.
20:50The circuit itself is a place for pedestrians as well as for cars and sitting on the outside of the
20:56bend, legs dangling, means nothing to Luigi.
20:59It's a picnic fiesta, and a roaring racing car doesn't stop you trumping your partner's ace.
21:09Even the Sicilian dogs refuse to recognise that motor racing is dangerous.
21:29De Bourbon's GTO has been shunted already. Later he is to crash more seriously.
21:43After a bad first lap, Colin Davis is pushing hard, and so is the Ford GT.
22:01Vaccarella's going even faster. Lap 2 takes him less than the Magic 40.
22:0639.21 to be exact, 39.3 seconds inside the previous record.
22:21There's that GTO again, after modifications.
22:35Vaccarella in action. Maglioli.
22:47As expected, the big Healey is in the pits early. The Scandinavian style gives the tyre people grey hair, we're
22:54told.
23:15The Ferrari GTO is also in for a quick check on its fore and after rebuilding.
23:20Scaffiotti is still in second place, but soon there's drama in the Ferrari pit when team manager Dragone learns that
23:27the car's steering has gone and it's a bit bent in consequence.
23:38But the other three works Ferraris are still going and Bandini has time to get his shoes right before Vaccarella
23:44comes in at the end of the third lap.
23:56Nina Vaccarella has won his co-driver a lead of nearly five minutes and the prancing horse of Modena has
24:02his hopes well on.
24:03Nina Vaccarella has hisschool.
24:04Nina Vaccarella has got a great boat.
24:07Nina Vaccarella has got a good boat, he's got a good boat.
24:12Nina Vaccarella was over the last.
24:25I have a good boat and the fort fort.
24:28Nina Vaccarella, who's in the boat!
24:28Anyway, here's the tiger in a four-paw drift.
24:43Ranno Altonen's rally technique
24:45has got him to third place in class
24:54a secondary pit area
24:56has been established on the high ground
24:58up by Bibbio Polizzi
24:59and a good thing too for some of the competitors
25:02among them, the Topetti Grana Ferrari
25:08there are a few further modifications necessary
25:11for the Ulysses Marchesi Ferrari
25:13but they don't take long
25:15and it's soon on its way again
25:22the rubber hammers are much in demand
25:24at the Polizzi pits
25:25that's the Bluensawa Ferrari GTO
25:28are receiving a spot of body bashing
25:33the Sicilian dust is being raised with a vengeance now
25:37as the roads take their ferocious annual pound
25:48Bandini's holding on to the lead
25:55Maglioli is running fifth overall
25:56and as the cars become more and more mixed up
25:59lap charts are a problem for the enthusiasts
26:03the Maglioli Porsche comes in at the end of the fourth lap
26:25as the cacti drows in the midday sun
26:28the original entry of 59 becomes more and more depleted
26:36for many of the drivers
26:38the long walk back has already begun
26:43the car is solidly in the lead in the smallest GT class
26:49and Bandini leads the race overall
26:58and in the target isn't only the drivers
27:00who dice with death
27:06at times the circuit looks like bank holiday
27:09on the Brighton Road
27:10but the crowds
27:11there are over a quarter of a million
27:13around the circuit enjoy every second
27:24Sir John Whitmore third overall
27:30and the Sprite is still third in its class
28:02Il nostro corso gratuito è www.mesmerism.info
28:06www.mesmerism.info
28:06The beautiful fin-tailed Alpine of Grandsir
28:09is running second in the 1600 prototype class
28:12but it is soon to crash and catch fire.
28:18196, the Viscaldi Deserti GTP is fourth in class
28:22so in the big prototypes it's Ferrari, Ferrari, Ford, Ferrari.
28:32Now the Sprite is having its own private war
28:35with the bent and battered Ferrari GTO.
29:02There's some Harry driving among the small GTs.
29:05The Eibart number 26 still has it
29:08but the Gilberti Nord car number 28 is trying hard.
29:13And so is Hopkirk in third place.
29:24There can be no doubt about it.
29:26Paddy is really enjoying his special stages in the Sicilian Alps.
29:49Half distance now.
29:51John Whitmore holding the Ford GT in third place overall
29:54comes near to disaster
29:56when his wheel comes off on the straight
29:58and the hub nut can't be found.
30:06Eventually a spectator returns it.
30:21and still Bandini's Ferrari continues to set the pace.
30:26With the Ford in trouble
30:27the Maglioli Porsche is up to third place overall.
30:31Having limped back to the pits
30:33the Ford gets rapid attention.
30:35Whitmore had found time to ring up the press box
30:37for the warning message.
30:38It could only happen in the target.
30:40The car is passed as okay
30:42but the incident puts it right out of the running
30:44for a major award.
30:47the wheels are not too long.
30:48One or two?
30:51Two.
30:51One or two?
30:53Two. One or two?
30:59Attack.
31:01And that's right.
31:03Make sure they stay on this towel.
31:07If that helmet transfer is worn backwards for luck.
31:10It just isn't working.
31:18ma Bob Bondurin
31:19setz off, determined as ever
31:22now Paddy's drive
31:24ends as he hands the valiant midget
31:26over to Andrew Hodges
31:27his has been a considerable achievement
31:29for the almost standard midget
31:31is only 8 minutes behind the class leaders
31:34the very hot Abarths
31:35a position not acquired without a certain
31:38expenditure of the hot coke sweat
31:39I might have to slow up
31:41and then after 2 anyway
31:43no no no
31:51keep going
31:52oh change it quick
32:07soon news comes
32:08that the Abarth lying second in the 1300 GT category
32:11has crashed
32:12and that the midget is now in second place
32:17but further drama
32:18here's the class leader
32:20with a broken throttle linkage
32:21at a time when every second cuts
32:33Virgilio displays understandable impatience
32:36as he sees his class lead
32:38disappearing second by second
32:40the
32:42another

33:15Ma il delay non è molto lungo per Hedges e la Midget,
33:18e il status quo è presto.
33:45La Germancella Abart,
33:48il 4th overall,
33:49spins,
33:50but stays well ahead in the 1600 prototype class.
35:41So now it's Nino's turn again, and barring accidents, he must win.
35:51Now the hill Bonia Porsche comes in five minutes late.
35:54Graeme had lost time earlier when a throttle linkage broke up by the Polizzi pits.
36:01Bonia takes over and Graeme looks far from happy, but the Porsche grip has tightened on the Ferraris,
36:07and von Henstein's cars now run second, third and fifth overall.
36:36The Ford GT efforts are finally brought to
36:39when Bondurant, trying perhaps a fraction too hard, ends up against a concrete road post.
36:48But his is not the only disappointment.
36:50The Biscaldi Deserti Ferrari, second in the three litre prototype class, is as good as out with transmission trouble.
36:57And the Porsche hold on the Targa Florio of 1965 strengthens still further.
37:01On the ninth lap, they are second, third, fourth and fifth.
37:06The big Healey was running first in class, but ignition trouble lost its time, and now it's second.
37:12The Sprite is being driven with typical determination.
37:17And now the leader starts his tenth and final lap.
37:21The Davis-Mitter Porsche is second.
37:22It becomes a matter of Sicilian honour.
37:33Bonia is fourth.
37:56Behind the leaders scurry the class winners.
37:59Of the small GTs, the Abarth is still first, with the Midget second.
38:07The Rovetta Staraba GTO leads the three litre GT class, with the Healey still second.
38:12And third in this class, the Ulysses Marchese GTO.
38:20The Hermancella Abarth leads the Sprite in the 1600 prototype class, and runs sixth overall.
38:27But all the Sicilian interest is centred on Baccarella and the big red Ferrari, as it rushes towards the finish.
38:35Cultivatura for the last time.
38:48Colisano for the last time.
38:59And onto the coast road.
39:01Ten kilometres to go, and six of them straight.
39:09So Baccarella and Bandini win for Ferrari, with Porsche second, third, fourth and fifth.
39:28What a triumph for the Sicilian born driver.
39:31The headmaster from Palermo, who now joins the great names of the Targa winners.
39:37The Sicilians are so excited that they nearly forget that Bandini also did something towards it.
39:43But for Baccarella, winning his own race in his own country, this is a day to remember.
39:59For the winners, the laurels are perhaps the only Rio road race left in the world today.
40:05And the 49th Targa Florio ends in the way that every Sicilian dreams.
40:15But to the victors themselves, the final word.
40:19Yes, I love Targa Florio because it's the competition of my house.
40:26And Lorenzo?
40:28I like it too much Targa Florio. I much bend.
40:32So the Chiring and the Tumult die, and the Piccolo-Madoni circuit is just an ordinary road again.
