00:03A real cradle of automobiles thanks to the Bolle family, the city of Le Mans buzzes every
00:08year when the Grand Prix d'Endurance takes place, the 24 hours of Le Mans. Unique in
00:14the world and created in 1923, the 11th edition took place on June 17th and 18th 1933. 28
00:21cars are entered, Bugatti, Duesenberg and above all seven Alfa Romeos. A few minutes
00:27after the start is given at four in the afternoon by Colonel Lindsay Lloyd, one of the favourites
00:32for the win, Prince Nicholas of Romania, is disqualified for taking on water earlier than
00:37permitted. With its armada of 8C2300 Series 3s driven by exceptional drivers, it's Alfa
00:44who have taken control. But Raymond Sommer slips down the standings, letting Louis Chiron and
00:49Luigi Chinetti take over at the front. With the fuel tank held together by soap and chewing
00:55gum because of a leak, the 11 car of Sommer and the Italian maestro Tazio Nuvolari is weaker
01:00but still holding together. The spectators are here and the sponsors too.
01:10As magical as always, the night falling at Le Mans allows the best cars and drivers to distinguish
01:15themselves. While the lights head into the night, the standings in the various categories
01:20are meticulously recorded by ACO officials. Admire the clothing style, the suits and wonderful
01:27hats. Very useful for protecting oneself from the Le Mans sunshine.
01:32It's becoming an intra-Alfa Romeo battle. Already victorious in the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia
01:37and twice at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 31 and 32. It goes without saying that these beautiful
01:43cars are overwhelming favourites to win again. The spectators have turned up in force, curious
01:50to see whether Alfa Romeo are capable of winning for the third consecutive time. The last twist
01:55in this event as Tazio Nuvolari in the 11 overtakes Luigi Chinetti in the final laps. So the
02:02the Alfa Romeo 11 wins with an average speed of 131 km an hour. The vehicles from the Milan
02:08firm have left only breadcrumbs for their rivals, Bugatti, Riley, Aston Martin and Traktor.
02:15A third consecutive victory at Le Mans for the Alfa Romeos with the 11 in front of the eight,
02:19an exceptional duel between the two teams. At the finish only 401 metres separated the two
02:25cars.
02:27The Milanese Constructor also won the Coupe Biennale for 32 and 33 and established a new
02:32distance record of 3,144 km. While the 13 classified cars enjoy their lap of honour, we soon learn
02:39that Alfa Romeo won't be officially represented in 1934 as the Italians have handed over their
02:45sporting interests to a certain Enzo Ferrari. Already the champion in 32 in a private Alfa,
02:50Sommar repeated the trick in 33 with Nuvolari as his teammate. An excellent bike rider, Nuvolari
02:58or Il Mantovano Volante proved his talent by winning the 24 hours of Le Mans in what would
03:04be his one and only participation in the event.
03:12The big winners are feted, Raymond Sommar and Tazio Nuvolari. In their Alfa HC 2300 No.11,
03:20the Franco-Italian team delivered a battle royale with the Alfa No.8 of Shinetti and Varon.
03:26and it's even a 1-2-3 for Alfa Romeo in 1933 as the 12 of Lewis and Rose Richards
03:32climbs onto
03:33the third step of the podium.
