00:01The UK is playing with fire. That was the chilling warning delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at

00:09the end of August.

00:10After the news broke, the UK was going to provide sensitive information relating to storm shadow missiles to Ukraine.

00:18To some, that might have seemed like an empty threat. Russia has made plenty of threats it doesn't follow through

00:23on after all.

00:24But Russia was serious. And on September 13th, it almost pulled off a deadly strike.

00:30Russia just tried to kill the UK's former prime minister, crossing an unforgivable line in the process.

00:37The war between Russia and the UK is kicking off.

00:40On September 13th, the news broke that Russia had pulled off a terrifying strike against a train that was travelling

00:46near the border between Ukraine and Poland.

00:49The attack was part of several, on a night where Russia once again escalated its targeting of trains, operated by

00:55Ukraine's leading rail company Ukuzaliznitsya.

00:59Fortunately, the strike wasn't successful, in the sense that Russia failed to inflict any casualties, the Kyiv Post reports.

01:05That, frankly, is a shock. Russia had struck the passenger train using a jet-powered drone.

01:10And it's reported that there were 206 passengers on board.

01:14The lack of casualties can be credited to Ukuzaliznitsya, which has a special monitoring team that saw the drone was

01:21incoming, enabling it to warn the crew and evacuate passengers before the Russian drone hit its target.

01:26But here's the twist. The train that Russia struck may not have been the Kremlin's intended target.

01:31That train was travelling on a line that is often used by diplomatic trains to transport important individuals from Poland

01:38into Ukraine.

01:38And just moments before Russia's jet-powered drone struck, one of these diplomatic trains had used that very line, and

01:45it was carrying a former UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

01:49We're going to dig a whole lot deeper into what is looking like an assassination attempt against the former UK

01:54leader.

02:08In the most shocking news to emerge from this whole incident, Johnson, along with several European national security advisors, including

02:15the UK's own Jonathan Powell, had only just passed along the same line that Russia hit as they travelled back

02:21from a conference held in Kyiv.

02:23We don't have exact timings, however, it's emerging that Johnson's train, or perhaps a train carrying other diplomats, was the

02:30intended target of the attack.

02:31In a statement published in the wake of the strike, Ukazal Itznitsya made that claim.

02:36It's entirely possible that the Russian drone's intended target was the diplomatic train, which departed the station earlier than scheduled

02:42after timetables were adjusted in real time because of the constant threat of Russian strikes, the company said in the

02:48statement.

02:48There are some important details here, especially if you're wondering how Russia could have mistimed its strike if Johnson was

02:54the target.

02:55The former UK Prime Minister's train had left the Yehudin station Russia targeted earlier than anticipated.

03:01Russia wouldn't have known about this shift.

03:03It would have known that Johnson was in the area, along with other diplomats, making Yehudin a clear target.

03:08The mention of the constant threat of Russian strikes also suggests that there might have been some intelligence doing the

03:14rounds, leading to the timetable switch-ups.

03:16Nothing else has been revealed about that intelligence, assuming it existed, but there was clearly some sort of forewarning.

03:23There would be no reason to change timings for Johnson's train otherwise.

03:26Johnson is furious, and he's not the only one.

03:28In a statement published on X, Johnson expressed his disbelief that Russia would try to do what it's just done.

03:35I don't know what warp logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this

03:40morning.

03:41What we can say for sure is that this is the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring

03:45every day, even on civilian railways, Johnson roared.

03:49Taking attention away from the fact that his own life was in danger, Johnson went on to point out that

03:54Russia's strikes have killed 1,700 Yehudin staff members during the war, and he made the renewed plea for the

04:01UK and Europe to get their acts together and give Ukraine what it needs.

04:05When are we going to give them the air defences they need? Why won't we unfreeze Putin's cash and give

04:09it to Ukraine?

04:10There is more than 140 billion euros in a Belgian bank account and about 10 billion pounds in London. Britain

04:16could show a lead, Johnson asked.

04:18It's a good question, but as Johnson raged against Russia and scolded the West for not doing enough, other diplomats

04:24had their own messages.

04:25You see, it wasn't just the UK's former Prime Minister who was travelling along the line that Russia struck on

04:30September 13th.

04:31We mentioned a conference in Kyiv. Johnson was not the only attendee.

04:35There were others who could have just as easily become victims of Russia's drone if circumstances had been different.

04:40Among them was former Swedish Prime Minister Karl Bilt, who appears to have been on the same train as Johnson,

04:45and he recounted his own experience while sharing footage of the evacuation.

04:50This wasn't our train, but the one just minutes after us by the Polish border crossing.

04:54It was evacuated as the Russian drone approached and no one was hurt. Very good safety system.

04:59Our train just had an evacuation warning but could proceed to Dorohusk.

05:03The Russian attacks against Ukraine are intensifying, Bilt declared on X.

05:07Ex-CIA chief David Petraeus was also in Yehodin station at the time of the strike, though he appears to

05:13have been taking a different train.

05:15Labelling the Russian attack as terrifying, Petraeus condemned the strike as

05:19The act of a truly barbaric leader trying to terrorise Ukrainian civilians.

05:24The picture is getting clearer.

05:25The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has verified 16,874 deaths of Ukrainian civilians, along

05:33with 51,273 injuries as of July 31st.

05:38So it's not as though Russia is hesitant to strike civilians.

05:41But in this attack, the Kremlin wanted to take out some more prominent targets.

05:45Johnson was among them, and there are reasons why, as tensions are flaring between the UK and Russia.

05:50We'll be getting to that.

05:52First, you might expect Russia to make some grand statement in the wake of this latest strike.

05:56And the Kremlin made a statement, alright.

05:58However, it was muted, likely intentionally so, to not give away the true purpose of the attack.

06:03As the Independent reports, all Russia's defence ministry said in the aftermath of the attack

06:08was that it had targeted infrastructure that facilitates the movement of military cargo from Western Europe into Ukraine.

06:15Technically that's true, but the timing reveals everything, as do the actual targets.

06:19Russia hit a passenger train.

06:21It wanted to hit a diplomatic train.

06:24There was no cargo involved in this strike.

06:26So the Russian statement looks weak.

06:28If we take what seems like an assassination attempt out of the picture for a moment,

06:32what we saw on September 13th was a continuation of the escalation of Russia's strikes against Ukrainian rail.

06:38Johnson hinted at that on X when he noted the 1,700 dead Ukuzalitsnitsiya workers.

06:44And the day before this strike, Russia hit railway infrastructure in Fastiv, which is in the Kyiv region, and the

06:49western city of Lutsk.

06:51As with the September 13th strike, passengers were evacuated before Russia's drones arrived, meaning there were no casualties.

06:57The same goes for train employees.

07:00Still, there is clearly a coordinated effort to cripple Ukraine's rail services happening here.

07:05Russian forces had previously struck four passenger trains in northern and eastern Ukraine between September 8th and 9th, injuring 20

07:12and killing three.

07:14The Independent also reports that Russia targeted another train, this time in Volin, on September 13th, though nobody was injured

07:21in this attack.

07:22Along with trains, Russia is also targeting gas stations, border crossings, and railway depots, seemingly to make it harder for

07:28Ukrainians to move around in their own country.

07:31A new Russian tactic is emerging.

07:34But what happened on September 13th may have been one of the biggest blunders Putin has made in the war

07:39so far.

07:40The UK has been put on alert, and rightfully so.

07:42However, another nation has also come down hard on Russia.

07:46Poland is pissed.

07:48And it should be.

07:49Many of these attacks are taking place along the border it shares with Ukraine, meaning there is a distinct risk

07:54of Russian drones entering Polish territory.

07:56We're going to explore what all of this means for Poland and the UK in a moment.

08:12Poland's reaction tells the story of a nation that is increasingly worried about what all of Russia's actions mean for

08:18its national security.

08:19In the wake of the September 13th train attack, Poland scrambled its security chiefs for an emergency meeting.

08:25Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with intelligence chiefs and military officials as he warned that the Russian escalation is no

08:31longer a theory.

08:32It's becoming a reality, as an increasingly unhinged Putin is ordering strikes that are right on the edge of Polish

08:39territory.

08:40The coming weeks and months will be a period of very intense activity on the Russian side, and unfortunately, we

08:46cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory, Tusk declared.

08:50Indeed, Poland is no stranger to Russian aerial threats.

08:54It was only as recently as the end of July that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed the border

08:59from Ukraine, crash landing about 90 kilometers deep into Polish territory.

09:04Warnings have since been issued by Poland, though there is yet to be any direct retaliation for Russia's actions.

09:09Metzer reports that Poland has stated that the strike on the Yehudin station will only strengthen support for Ukraine, not

09:15just in Poland, but the rest of Europe.

09:18Given that intimidation is the point of many of these strikes, that's something Putin won't want to hear.

09:22If Putin believes this will weaken our resolve, he's mistaken.

09:26On the contrary, the attack strengthens the political arguments in Poland and Europe.

09:30Russia is acting irresponsibly and aggressively, and we must be prepared to deter it, declared Polish Foreign Minister Radislav Sikorski,

09:37as he held a joint briefing with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sabir in Kyiv.

09:42Before the attack, Sikorski made some waves by letting Russia know exactly what would happen if Putin was stupid enough

09:47to get into a tangle with NATO.

09:50If Russia attacked us and we took our gloves off, I think we would defeat Russia quite quickly.

09:54We have overwhelming superiority over Russia in air power.

09:57General, correct me if I'm wrong, but it's something like 2,500 aircraft, Sikorski said at the Yalta European strategy

10:03meeting in Kyiv on September 12th.

10:06He highlighted Ukraine's long-range campaign against Russian oil refining, claiming that NATO could do in six weeks what Ukraine

10:12had done in six months, all due to having immense air power.

10:15Maybe Putin took this personally.

10:18Knowing that Sikorski is right, Russia's leader may have launched a drone strike that appeared to target a former UK

10:23Prime Minister to deliver a message to Poland.

10:25Sibir certainly seems to think this might be the case.

10:28He is warned that Russia's train strike should serve as a direct warning to all of Ukraine's allies, noting that

10:34Putin is now knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.

10:38Sibir called on the EU and NATO to throw the full weight of their sanctions at the Kremlin, including full

10:43trade embargoes and sanctions on Putin's military-industrial complex.

10:47That, he argues, would be the best way for both to show Putin that the barbarism he uses as a

10:52scare tactic isn't working.

10:53And then there's the UK.

10:55Beyond Ukraine and Poland, both of which have obvious concerns about Russia's attack, it's the UK that will be paying

11:01very close attention.

11:02There was nothing random about what Russia did on September 13th.

11:05A very prominent public figure in the UK appears to have been targeted and could well have been struck if

11:11not for the changing of a timetable and the excellent work of Ukraine's leading rail company.

11:16What we're seeing here is much bigger than an isolated incident.

11:19It's the latest in a series of aggressive moves that Russia has been making toward the UK, indicating that a

11:24new war is brewing.

11:26Putin and his cronies have hinted that something like this could be coming for a while.

11:30We mentioned Zakharova's comments right at the beginning of the video.

11:33The words playing with fire have been mentioned.

11:37Zakharova backed those words by claiming that Russia has repeatedly warned the UK that any military equipment and installations could

11:44become targets if the UK continues to support Ukraine.

11:47Apparently, English politicians have now been added to the list.

11:50We propose that the British leadership once again carefully analyze the situation and immediately, in the most resolute and unequivocal

11:57manner, abandon the hostile aggressive line.

11:59Putin, Zakharova said at the time.

12:01Nothing has changed in terms of the UK's support.

12:04Putin has also hinted at strikes against the UK in the recent past.

12:08In a one-line response to a question about whether Russia would look to strike military facilities in the UK,

12:13Putin said,

12:13that's a secret, a military secret.

12:16On top of all of that, a map has been doing the rounds showing 34 different locations that Russia could

12:21strike in the UK following those vague threats against military sites.

12:25None of this is coincidental.

12:27Russia wants the UK to know that Putin is plotting something big.

12:32The assassination attempt against Johnson, assuming that's what we've just seen, may have failed.

12:36But it's also not the only tangible evidence we see that, for all intents and purposes, Russia appears to consider

12:42itself at war with the UK.

12:45The evidence is stacking up.

12:46Head back to April, when we saw the UK and Norway disrupt a Russian training exercise that involved Russia using

12:52submersibles to track and sever undersea cables.

12:55We saw something similar in August, when the Royal Navy spent three days tracking Russian vessels as they passed through

13:01UK waters.

13:02Russia is trying to present a threat to the UK cable network that hosts 119 cables, enabling $17 trillion of

13:10trade to pass every single day.

13:12As former Royal Navy Commodore John Aitken puts it,

13:15the seabed is becoming a battlefield in a way that we haven't seen before.

13:19Russia is already fighting against the UK on that battlefield.

13:22It should also be pointed out that Russia is waging a daily hybrid war against the UK,

13:27employing covert tactics that offer plausible deniability to do as much damage to the UK as possible.

13:33The September 13th train strike is the most obvious attack against the UK we've seen so far.

13:37But long before that, Russia has been targeting hospitals, infrastructure and businesses all over the UK, often with cyber attacks.

13:45That was the case when a company named Synovis, which provides pathology services to National Health Service hospitals in London,

13:51was hit with a ransomware attack in June 2024 that took systems offline.

13:57That attack caused over $44 million in damage and disrupted treatments for 11,000 patients.

14:02And it's just one of many examples.

14:05Just as it's fighting the UK on the seabed, Russia is at war with the UK in the online realm.

14:10And now we see this.

14:11A direct attack on a train line that just moments before had been used by a former UK leader.

14:17Russia is clearly escalating its campaign against the UK.

14:21There is a war happening, and it's not clear how prepared the UK is to fight it.

14:25There has been talk, of course.

14:27Back in January, former UK Prime Minister Sakiya Starmer declared that the UK needs to be ready for war,

14:32though he didn't introduce any concrete steps that would enable that readiness.

14:36Sky News reported at the time.

14:38We may be seeing hints of some steps being created now, though.

14:41Back in July, the UK government urged the public to start taking small but important steps to secure water, power

14:47and phone signals,

14:49for use in cases of national crises, weather emergencies and, crucially, cyber attacks.

14:53The advice was general and didn't go much further than encouraging some stockpiling.

14:57But the advice came on the back of a warning to ministers that the UK isn't prepared for a major

15:02shock to its supply chains,

15:04such as what would happen during a war with Russia.

15:06The UK likely still isn't prepared.

15:08At least, the public isn't.

15:10A warning to buy a few bottles of water isn't the sort of disaster preparedness

15:14that is going to get anybody ready for what the Kremlin seems to be brewing.

15:17Something more concrete was revealed on September 8th.

15:20The UK is now planning a major drill that would allow it to mobilise an army of 95,000 veterans.

15:26The drill, which is due to take place in 2027, will see reservists called into action

15:30on a scale we haven't seen for a long time, says Armed Forces Minister Louise Sander-Jones.

15:36Details of the drill haven't been shared, though it seems likely that it will serve as a test of veterans'

15:41ability

15:41to be called upon and suitably equipped in the event of a national emergency.

15:45So, moves are being made.

15:48But the obvious question has to be asked, is this enough?

15:51It's very clear at this point that Russia is escalating.

15:54It may have just tried to kill Boris Johnson, and it's clearly conducting a hybrid war against the UK

15:59that has only intensified since the Ukraine invasion was launched.

16:02The UK needs to elevate its reaction to all of this if Russia is to take it seriously as a

16:07threat.

16:08Right now, the Kremlin seems to be happy with this escalation.

16:11The UK, Poland and Ukraine were all affected by the September 13th train strike.

16:16However, we will have to wait and see what, if any, response comes from the UK in the aftermath.

16:21We've said that Russia considers itself to be at war with the UK, but we haven't fully explored how deep

16:26that war has already gone.
