00:00you need to put like a jackass thing before the movie like do not try this
00:09thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me i'm obsessed with the movie oh thank you
00:13when did you see it i saw it last week i was in a screening room alone so i'm very
00:17excited to go
00:18see it with oh yeah having a shared experience is kind of key with this movie so yeah go again
00:25with a bunch of girlfriends i'm so excited to see specifically the scene where jacob you lift
00:30margot up with one hand i just know that people on the internet if they're not already are going
00:35to be trying to recreate that so i'm curious if you guys have any tips i'm not going to reveal
00:39the
00:39movie magic secret to how he actually did that shot but uh yeah it was all jacob he did that
00:45you
00:45need to put like a jackass thing before the movie like do not try this really is that complicated
00:51yeah that takes that takes that takes incredible strength you just did so many incredible bicep
00:56strength you wouldn't you can't even begin just on the right arm too so much just this one just this
01:02enormous all right i won't have my hinge date try to do that then most of the tragedy in this
01:08movie
01:08could have been avoided if there was just more honest communication which just breaks my heart
01:12why do you guys think it's so hard for people to just say what they mean especially in like a
01:16romantic
01:16context i know i guess i guess everyone's just scared of being hurt or getting hurt and putting
01:23themselves out there and being rejected and yeah i guess it's the fear of rejection maybe yeah or the
01:30you know if if you are rejected then you feel not lovable like you're not able to be loved and
01:36i think
01:36that's a really frightening sort of thing to face so if you don't put yourself out there you don't have
01:40to face that maybe you can't be loved you know do we need to talk to you no we need
01:45to talk are you
01:45okay you're doing okay you're trying to tell us something i don't know i don't know i hadn't thought
01:52of that just think about it just a theory um i'll hold for spoilers but margot what do you think
01:59kathy's last words to heathcliff would have been if she could have said goodbye do you think there's
02:03like any reality where they could have just like been happy together knowing kathy it would have been
02:08like i hate you i hate you which always means i love you translation yeah direct translation is i
02:14love you i have not broken your heart you have broken it and in breaking it you've broken mine
02:22when is the moment when you think heathcliff and kathy like both realize like oh
02:26this is love for me i think it's the the moment he saw her it is one of those um
02:34sort of like
02:35galaxy exploding moments i think the moment he set eyes on her he loved it yeah there's that in
02:41the movie it's like the young kathy and heathcliff the first time they really see each other they're
02:47under the bed like as little kids and and he's got his hand over her mouth and they're both just
02:52kind
02:53of like terrified and i don't know i i think it's that moment i think that moment like that's when
02:59they're
03:00they're destined to to be each other's demise from that point on well thank you guys so much that's
03:07my time but i love this movie oh that was so quick i know i feel like we got real
03:13heavy even
03:13i know i'm sorry i loved it emerald it's so nice to meet you so nice to meet you hannah
03:20there's so much
03:21i want to talk to you about so i'm just going to dive right in i read that you said
03:24that you wanted
03:25withering heights to be this generation's titanic and i know titanic is pg-13 and this is rated r so
03:31i was curious if that was something that you were conscious of at all while you were making the movie
03:35god what a good question well i mean i think to be honest when it comes to ratings i always
03:40find it a
03:40little bit baffling because i don't think i think this is you know it's not it's it's very it's much
03:46more
03:46of a romance this movie than i think people are expecting um and so i mean i think that
03:55lots of teenagers will be able to watch this movie as long as you know an adult brings them and
04:01you
04:02know i think it's i think you just have to make the movie that you want to make that feels
04:07right to
04:08you and then you know not worry too much about things like ratings i love that answer um we'll hold
04:14this till after the movie comes out but i want to talk about the ending a little bit where does
04:18your
04:18version of heathcliff go from here god that's so interesting i mean i think
04:26it's it's always funny to imagine what people do when they're kind of yeah when you call cut i think
04:32the truth of it is is that the heathcliff of the movie and the heathcliff of the book
04:36you know maybe the same which is that they're just emotionally destroyed
04:40and that emotional destruction bleeds out into other people's lives you know that's the thing
04:47is that there is no life after kathy and that's what he says in the book and that's the case
04:53here
04:53and so it's yeah whatever it is it will be it will be a kind of half-life i think
04:58why did you leave me
05:01why did you betray your own heart
05:05i love the aesthetic of this movie and of all your movies and i was really intrigued by the way
05:09that you used color so i was curious if there's a deeper meaning there or anything that you can
05:13talk about i mean absolutely i think the thing about the gothic and you know any gothic literature
05:19making any gothic you know cinema is that everything is pathetic fallacy right it's not just the weather
05:26that is stormy when people are feeling sad or sunny when people are happy it's that the clothes that they
05:33wear the rooms that they inhabit reflect their emotional landscape so so much of everything
05:38that we made in this movie was to do with that whether it's to do with the underside of things
05:42having hair on them for example so the underside of staircases the underside of tables often had fur
05:48or hair and it's kind of always about looking not just at color but at texture and kind of explaining
05:54as best as you can what a world feels like emotionally and so when it comes to the color palette
05:59of the
05:59clothes for example it made sense that kathy makes an imprint on the world that she's in
06:03kathy is kind of like burns an image onto any space and so we wanted to make sure that her
06:09clothes
06:09were very graphic so they're black white red and you know cation like a silver because she's always
06:14a kind of sort of indelible shape but when it comes to isabella she's sort of soft and pastel
06:19and she has trims which kind of give her this sort of sense of like disappearing into any room that
06:24she's in
06:24so it's just always about looking at what is the emotional reason for making anything whether it's
06:29like the camera shot or you know the fabric on a chair i love that really quickly i'll get you
06:36out
06:36on this one um the scene where heathcliff picks kathy up with one hand is so good and i was
06:40curious if
06:41you could talk about the decision to wait to have them kiss oh i mean we had to you have
06:48to you have to
06:49wait you know there's no you can't in those days it was unbelievably transgressive and and it would
06:56have been a it's a threshold i think the thing that was really important to communicate was that at this
07:01time the kind of feelings that they had for each other you know out of wedlock and out of the
07:06class
07:06system were impossible and so it was really important that we understood how troubling the
07:12feelings are for kathy and how dangerous stepping over those boundaries was and i felt it was completely
07:18right that she wouldn't just she couldn't just yield so yeah so no no it's really important but
07:26no of course i mean it's very frustrating but that's the fun isn't it the weight it is thank you
07:34so much
07:34for taking the time to chat thank you i'm curious between the two of you who do you think well
07:39your
07:39characters who do you think is the most victimized by kathy and heathcliff's toxic relationship i mean
07:46what is isabella goes through is pretty tough well you i don't know but the dog collaring of it all
07:56you know yeah i think we're both unlucky yeah we've not done very much out of it but also you
08:03know
08:05i don't know i think they all they also have such a tough time as well everyone has a bit
08:10of a tough time
08:10in the end so true um also and i was curious before heathcliff even enters the picture i was
08:18like it seems almost like isabella is maybe like in love with kathy a little bit like how would you
08:24define that sort of like obsession that she seemingly has yeah i'm sure she yeah i think a part of
08:30her is
08:30but i think it's more like at that sort of period love in a marriage was like a bonus and
08:36so like female
08:37relationships were just as sort of important and i think when kathy joins like i think isabella's like
08:43she's sort of mine too you know she's she's probably very lonely actually and she she is desperate for
08:50a best friend or a companion because she probably would have had like a nanny who would have left a
08:54couple of years ago and so she's you know she's just making her sort of dresses and dolls and when
09:00you wave in the snow it's the it's the most hard she just wants like a best friend so i
09:05think she
09:06is just obsessed with kathy kathy because she has so much love to give and kathy's like the most
09:11beautiful just sort of intoxicating person to be with so i think she probably is but then she really
09:18probably understands like what that is when she meets heathcliff i think allison i'm curious if
09:23there's anything heathcliff could have said to isabella that night when he comes in through the
09:27window it would have made her go like you know what actually i'm good i don't think so
09:35i don't think so i think once he arrives in the house she's like okay because also she is someone
09:43who's never been told no like she always always gets what she wants like she is quite um spoiled and
09:50so i think getting heathcliff is kind of sort of a quest like i think she really was gonna i
09:56think she
09:56felt like she was probably gonna get him one way or another or something you know and um so no
10:02i
10:02don't i don't i don't know poor thing i know and she's out i'm curious at the end where do
10:08you think
10:08your character goes from there yeah especially with heathcliff just sitting in the house like yes
10:16well i was saying this earlier that i think he probably needs to find isabella again because
10:21she's he's gone off somewhere and they just need to just reassess or and process what's happened
10:27yeah but definitely straight back in the house maybe go on a little holiday somewhere
10:33yeah take a break you know i can follow you like a dog to the end of the world
