Why Americans turned German minefields against their owners is a gripping World War II history story about how the U.S. Army learned to survive, read, and reuse the enemy’s deadliest ground weapon. 00:00June 6th, 1944. Half past six in the morning, on the tidal flat below the bluffs at Omaha Beach.
00:08The tide is coming in. A gap assault team is standing in water above its knees,
00:13in front of a row of heavy logs driven into the sand at an angle, pointing out to sea.
00:19Twenty-eight Army engineers. Behind them, a Navy officer and twelve more men.
00:24And on the seaward tip of those logs, ten and twelve feet above their heads, sit steel discs about the
00:31size of a dinner plate.
00:33Each disc holds roughly eleven pounds of TNT.
00:37They are German anti-tank mines, waterproofed and lashed in place, set to fire the moment a landing craft rides
00:44up onto the timber.
00:46Farther out, 250 yards from the high water line, stand iron gates, ten feet high on rollers.
00:52And teller mines are wired to the uprights of those as well.
00:56Closer in, at 130 yards, steel hedgehogs, five and a half feet tall, built to tear the bottom out of
01:04a boat.
01:04The engineers have about 30 minutes to open a 50-yard lane through all three bands before the sea closes
01:11over the work.
01:12They have no machine that can do it.
01:15What they have is one man standing on another man's shoulders to get his hands up to a live German
01:21mine.
01:22Hold that picture, because the whole question of this story is inside it.
01:27On the first morning in occupied France, the first thing thousands of Americans touched was not a rifle, not a
01:34German soldier, not the sand.
01:36It was a German mine.
01:38Now look at what happened next, because it makes no sense at first.
01:43Less than a year later, the same weapon that pinned those men to the water line had stopped protecting the
01:49army that made it.
01:50German units were retreating, across ground their own engineers had sown.
01:55German commanders were losing men and vehicles to their own belts.
01:59And the American army, which in 1942 had almost no idea how to fight a minefield, had become the force
02:06that read German mines better than anyone alive outside the Wehrmacht, and used what it read.
02:12That is the question we are going to answer.
02:15How did the most carefully engineered obstacle system of the entire war end up working for the people it was
02:21built to stop?

02:35Start with the man who put those mines on the beach.
02:38Erwin Rommel took over the Atlantic defenses in late 1943, and he came to that job with a fixed idea,
02:46learned in the desert, where he had watched mines do the work of divisions he did not have.
02:51Germany was short of infantry.
02:53Germany was short of tanks, fuel, and time.
02:57But Germany could manufacture mines by the million, and did.
03:01Under Rommel, somewhere between 5 and 6 million mines went into the ground in northern France alone.
03:07The Teller anti-tank mine, the one on those logs, was produced in enormous quantity, roughly 3.5 million of
03:15just the 1943 model.
03:17Remember that word, manufacture.
03:20It matters later, and not for the reason you would expect.
03:25Because a mine is not really a weapon in the way a rifle is.
03:29A rifle needs a man.
03:31A mine needs a record.
03:34Someone has to know where it is.
03:36If nobody knows, it is as dangerous to the side that laid it as to the side walking into it.
03:42And the German army understood this better than anybody.
03:46Their mine warfare was a system.
03:49Patterns laid to a standard, distances measured with a marked wire, belts drawn onto plans, and small, quiet markings on
03:57the ground so that German soldiers, and only German soldiers, could find the safe lane back through.
04:03That system was extraordinary.
04:06It was also the thing that eventually failed them.
04:09Keep that in the back of your mind as we go.
04:12Now, on the morning we started with, none of it had failed yet.
04:16The obstacle bans at Omaha were more formidable than the planners had expected.
04:21The teams got through a fraction of what they were sent to do.
04:24When the army half of those gapping crews finally came off the beach and reverted to their parent battalions, the
04:30146th and the 299th engineer combat battalions, each had lost between 34 and 41 percent of its strength.
04:40Think about that number for a moment.
04:42Not a rifle company in a frontal assault.
04:45Engineers, whose job that morning was to walk into the water and take the enemy's explosives apart with their hands.
04:57And here is what makes the next part of this story strange.
05:00Those losses were not the beginning of American mine warfare.
05:04They were already the result of two years of hard, expensive education.
05:09An education that started in a place most people never connect with D-Day at all,
05:14where the United States Army discovered that it did not know how to do this, and had to go and
05:19ask the British to teach it.
05:22There is a detail from that period that sounds invented when you first hear it.
05:26To train Americans to handle German mines, the army needed German mines, and it could not get them.
05:33What it did about that shortage involved a three-star general's personal aircraft,
05:38and it ended with an order that live German mines could no longer be used to teach American troops at
05:45all.
05:45March 23rd, 1943.
05:48Southern Tunisia, on the road running east out of Gafsa, where the American 2nd Corps is pushing toward El-Gitar.
05:55A mine detection party is on its knees in the gravel.
05:59One man sweeps with a detector, and when the tone changes, he stops and steps back.
06:04The second man comes forward with a bayonet and slides the blade into the ground at a low angle,
06:09an inch at a time, because pressure from above is exactly what the thing under the soil is waiting for.
06:16He finds a flat steel edge.
06:18He clears the dirt away with his fingers.
06:21It is a teller mine, the mine the Germans used most in Tunisia.
06:26Eleven pounds of explosive under a pressure plate.
06:29Twice the charge of the American anti-tank mine,
06:32which is why an American tank that hit an American mine usually lost a track,
06:37and an American tank that hit a teller usually lost its hull and its undercarriage and the men sitting on
06:43top of them.
06:44Now here's the detail I want you to hold on to, because everything in this story turns on it.
06:49That mine has three wells for igniters.
06:53One on top, the pressure igniter, for the tank.
06:56And two more, one in the side, one underneath, meant for sensitive pull igniters.
07:04Those two are not for the tank.
07:07The tank will never touch them.
07:10They're there for the man on his knees, in the gravel, with his fingers in the dirt.
07:17Think about what that says.
07:19The Germans did not design the teller only to stop vehicles.
07:23They designed it to punish the enemy engineer who came to take it out of the ground.
07:29The mine was built to keep its own secret.
07:33And in that spring in Tunisia, American mine detection parties took 10,750 enemy mines out of the ground anyway.

07:47Lifted one at a time, by hand, by men who had learned the job in the last few weeks,
07:53because the United States Army had come to North Africa without a serious school of mine warfare,
07:59and knew it within days.
08:01The British had been doing this since the desert, so the Americans went to them.
08:06About 40 American officers and more than 100 non-commissioned officers
08:10went through a mine school run by the British First Army.
08:14Another course was run by the 8th Army.
08:17Then the 5th Army built its own school of mine warfare at Ein Fritisse in Morocco,
08:22and staffed part of it with instructors borrowed from the British.
08:26And then they ran into the problem I promised you at the end of the last part.
08:31And it is one of the strangest supply problems of the war.
08:35The school had no mines.
08:38Not American mines.
08:40Those they had.
08:42German mines.
08:44The thing they actually needed to teach was the enemy's device.
08:48And the enemy's device was lying around by the thousand at the front,
08:53hundreds of miles from the classroom,
08:55and nobody had built a system to move it back.
08:58Thousands of German and Italian mines were in the theater.
09:02Most mine training was carried out without a single one of them.
09:06So the army improvised.
09:08The way it improvised everything that year.
09:11Some captured mines were crated up and shipped to England for training.
09:15And Lieutenant General Mark Clark, commanding the 5th Army,
09:18put German mines aboard his own personal aircraft
09:21and had them flown from the front back to his mine school.
09:25Stop and picture that.
09:26A three-star general's plane, the aircraft that carried him to conferences with army commanders,
09:32used as a courier for live German anti-tank mines.
09:36Because a classroom full of young Americans could not be taught to survive a weapon they had never been allowed
09:41to hold.
09:42That is the first crossing point of this whole story, and I want to mark it clearly.
09:48In the spring of 1943, the German mine stopped being only a thing that killed Americans.
09:54It became the thing that taught them.
09:57Every mine lifted in the field was a lesson carried to the rear.
10:02The enemy's factory output had started, quietly, to work as an American curriculum.
10:09It came at a price the army did not advertise.
10:12Teaching with live enemy mines meant men were hurt learning.
10:17The restriction on live enemy mines in training was argued over by the theater's own engineers,
10:23Colonel Garrison Davidson among them.
10:26But notice what this curriculum could and could not do.
10:30You can only teach the mine you have already met.
10:34Everything the 5th Army School knew, it knew because some man on his knees in Tunisia
10:40had found it first and lived.
10:43The system worked backward from experience, always one step behind.
10:48And the people producing the mines were not standing still.
10:51You can see the gap open in Sicily four months later.
10:54On one beach at Gela, engineers came across six rows of teller mines, laid three yards apart.
11:01A measured, deliberate pattern, which tells you the men who put it there worked from a plan
11:06and a written record.
11:09Inland, around Randazzo, the Germans left mines in great numbers on ground where the soil itself was so full of
11:16metal that an American detector sang continuously and told you nothing at all.
11:21Two facts sitting side by side.
11:24The Germans were writing their minefields down.
11:27The Americans were losing the ability to find them by machine.
11:32Which raises the question the rest of this story is built on, and the answer, when the Americans finally arrived
11:38at it, had almost nothing to do with detectors.
11:48What happened to that experiment is one of the quietest failures of the campaign.
11:53June, 1944.
11:55A road in Italy, in the Fifth Army's zone, and a column of American engineers is standing well back while
12:02a dog works the shoulder of the road.
12:05The dog is one of a hundred.
12:07They belong to the 228th Engineer Mine Detection Company, which has just arrived in the theater,
12:14and they represent the United States Army's answer to the problem we left at the end of the last part.
12:19The enemy is burying things you cannot see, and your machine is going deaf.
12:26The Army had already tested the idea at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, and the test results were not good.
12:34In the demonstration, the dogs missed 20% of the mines that were there, and indicated mines 20% of
12:40the time in ground where there were none.
12:43One in five missed.
12:46One in five imaginary.
12:48Those numbers were known, and the company was sent to Italy anyway, because the alternative was a man with a
12:54bayonet and a hundred miles of road.
12:57In Italy, it got worse.
13:00A controlled test put the dog's detection rate at about 30%.
13:05Seven mines in ten went unfound.
13:08There were casualties.
13:10By September, the company was pulled out of the line, and in February of 1945, it was disbanded.
13:18Now, most accounts stop there, at a failed experiment.
13:22But look at why it failed, because this is the hinge of the whole story.
13:28The dogs had not been taught to smell the mine.
13:31They had been taught to notice where a human being had disturbed the earth.
13:35That is a completely different idea from a metal detector.
13:39And it is, in fact, the correct idea.
13:42It says,
13:47The dogs could not carry that idea.
13:50A dog cannot reason about why a German pioneer chose one field and not the next one.
13:56But the American army could.
13:58And over the next year, that is exactly what it learned to do.
14:03Remember what the machine could actually do.
14:06The standard American detector read to a depth of roughly 6 to 12 inches.
14:11It could not be used in the rain.
14:13It was helpless where the ground itself held metal.
14:16And it was blind, by design, to anything without enough steel in it.
14:20So, the Americans in Italy began doing the other thing.
14:24They started reading the German engineer.
14:27In January of 1944, on the approaches to the Rapido River, the 5th Army ran into a mine belt a
14:34mile long.
14:35S-mines, teller mines, and wooden box mines layered together.
14:40The 111th Engineer Combat Battalion had the job of clearing enemy mines ahead of the crossing sites.
14:47One of those three is the one men remembered, the S-mine.
14:52A canister the size of a large jar, thrown waist-high by a small propelling charge before the main charge
14:59fires,
15:00spraying about 360 steel balls flat across the ground.
15:05German documents put its lethal radius at 20 meters.
15:09American training manuals warned men that it could cause casualties out to 140.
15:15The Americans called it the Bouncing Betty.
15:18Germany made close to 2 million of them.
15:21But watch what the Americans started to notice, because it is the thing that changes everything.
15:27North of Naples, one unit going into a site chosen for a hospital found 230 teller mines,
15:34and 47 other mines and booby traps waiting in the ground.
15:39A hospital site.
15:41Not a road junction.
15:42Not a bridge.
15:44Not a firing position.
15:46A flat, dry, sheltered piece of ground with good access.
15:50Which is to say, the exact piece of ground an American staff officer would circle on a map.
15:56Do you see what that means?
15:58The German engineer was not mining the ground he cared about.
16:02He was mining the ground he predicted the Americans would want.
16:07Every one of those 230 mines was a statement about how the Germans expected Americans to behave.
16:13And a statement can be read.
16:16That is the whole reversal in one sentence.
16:19If the enemy mines what he thinks you will do, then his minefield is a map of his own thinking.
16:25Where he expects your tanks.
16:27Where he expects your crossing.
16:29How long he thinks he has.
16:31And how many men he no longer has to hold the ground himself.
16:36American engineer units began treating what they lifted as information the way an intelligence
16:41section treats anything else.
16:43What type?
16:44Laid in what pattern?
16:46How deep?
16:47With what igniter?
16:48On what kind of ground?
16:50In front of what kind of position?
16:52Not to admire it.
16:54To predict the next one.
16:56And the Germans, who were losing the ground where all of this was happening, made the move
17:01that should have ended the argument for good.
17:04If the American finds mines with a machine that looks for metal, build a mine with no metal in it.
17:11A wooden box.
17:13200 grams of explosive.
17:15A hinged lid.
17:16And nothing inside for a detector to hear.
17:19In the winter of 1944, one American regiment in Lorraine would pull more than 12,000 of them out of
17:27a single field.
17:2812,000 in one field, found by men who could no longer trust the only machine they had.
17:36That was bad.
17:37But it was not the worst of it.
17:40Because there was a second German mine coming, made of wood pulp and tar and glass, that no Allied detector
17:47in the war ever solved.
17:48And the Germans could walk straight to every single one of theirs.
17:52They had a way of marking them that the Allies never found out about until after the war was over.
17:57December 3rd, 1944, the low Vosges Mountains in eastern France.
18:02And it is raining, which matters more than it sounds.
18:06The engineer company working the roads that day is attached to the 399th Infantry, and its detectors are useless.
18:14The set cannot be used in the rain.
18:16So, the men do it the other way.
18:18They get down on the road and slide a blade, a trench knife, a bayonet, into the soil at a
18:25low angle, so that no pressure ever reaches the top of whatever is under there.
18:29An inch of steel at a time, across a road, in December, in the mountains.
18:35The report for that day carries one line about a private named Harry Johnson, wounded by a steel pellet from
18:42an S-mine explosion.
18:44One line.
18:46One pellet out of 360.
18:49And that is the part of German mine warfare the numbers never show you.
18:55The shoe mine, the wooden box we ended on last time, was not built to kill.
19:01It was built to take a man's foot off.
19:04A dead soldier costs the enemy one man.
19:07A man with his foot gone costs them the two or three who carry him, the aid station, the ambulance,
19:13the surgeon,
19:14and every soldier within earshot who now walks differently for the rest of the war.
19:19And the Germans built one more layer into it, which the engineers and the Vosges learned the hard way.
19:25Mines were booby-trapped, so that when one was diffused and pulled, another one beside it fired.
19:32Road blocks were made of felled trees, stretching a hundred yards up a road, branches wired together, with charges hidden
19:39in them.
19:40Now I promised you the second mine, and here it is, because this is the one that should have won
19:46the argument for Germany.
19:47It came into service in 1944, and the Germans called it the Topfmine, the pot mine.
19:54The case was pressed wood pulp, cardboard, and tar.
19:59The plugs and fittings were glass.
20:00There was no metal in it worth the name.
20:03Put it in the ground, and the best detector the American army had would pass over it and say nothing,
20:09and go on saying nothing until a tank drove onto it.
20:13Which creates a problem for the man who buried it.
20:16If your enemy cannot find your mine, neither can you.
20:20And a German army that had to move, counterattack, or retreat across its own ground needed to find them.
20:27So the Germans coated the Topfmine with a black, sandy substance.
20:32They called it tarn sand, camouflage sand.
20:35To an American engineer looking at a lifted mine, it was dirt, or paint, or nothing at all.
20:41It was neither.
20:43Tarn sand was mildly radioactive.
20:46The German detector built for the job carried a simple Geiger counter,
20:50and it did not listen for metal at all.
20:52It listened for the mine's own signature.
20:55German pioneers could walk a field of invisible mines and find every one of theirs.
21:01The Allies never worked it out.
21:03That fact came to light after the war was over.
21:06That is the clearest picture of the German mind in this whole story.
21:10They built a weapon that was invisible to everyone on Earth except its owner.
21:14They gave it a private mark that only their own equipment could read.
21:18And they told nobody.
21:21Now widen that out, because tarn sand was not an exception.
21:25It was the whole German system in miniature.
21:29Their minefields in a static position were laid to an overall mine plan,
21:33worked out together with the fields of fire.
21:36The belts were laid in lines, with the anti-tank mines out in front,
21:40so an armored vehicle would not set off the anti-personnel belt behind.
21:45The distances were measured with a marked wire, 24 meters long,
21:49so a field laid in one sector looked like a field laid in another.
21:54And they marked their own fields with things designed to mean nothing to us.
21:58A single strand of wire, an old mine crate, a short stake, a small flag.
22:05Safe lanes their own men could follow and an American would walk straight past.
22:11That is not an obstacle. That is a language.
22:15A written, standardized, deliberately private language, laid into the soil of half a continent.
22:22And the Germans were the only people who could read it.
22:26And here is the thing about a private language.
22:28It has three requirements, and you should hold all three.
22:32Because the rest of this story is the story of Germany losing them, one at a time.
22:38The people who wrote it have to stay near what they wrote.
22:41The records have to survive. And the front has to stand still.
22:47There is a fourth weakness, and the Americans found it first, because it costs nothing.
22:53You do not have to read a minefield to use it. You only have to know that it is there.
22:58A field you have located, drawn on your own map and told your neighbors about,
23:03has stopped being a German weapon.
23:05It has become a fixed feature of the ground, like a river or a cliff.
23:10And fixed features on a battlefield belong to whichever side thinks about them harder.
23:15But none of that was obvious yet in the autumn of 1944.
23:19And the bill for learning it was being paid in a forest on the German border.
23:24In November, in the Hürtgen, a private from the 4th Infantry Division stepped on a mine,
23:29on a night patrol, and lost his foot. What the Germans did to him after they found him lying there,
23:36is the most disturbing single thing in this story. And it shows exactly what American troops were
23:42being asked to walk into. November 1944. The Hürtgen Forest, on the German border,
23:49where the 1st Army had been grinding forward since September.
23:53A night patrol from the 4th Infantry Division, a private named William Edwards,
23:58a married man with six children at home, steps on a mine. It takes off his right foot.
24:05German soldiers find him where he fell. They do not take him prisoner, and they do not finish him.
24:11They wire explosives to his body and leave him there, alive, as a booby trap for whoever comes to get
24:17him.
24:18He lies in that forest for about 70 hours. And this is the part I want you to hold,
24:25because it is not a story about what was done to him. Edwards fought to stay conscious the entire time,
24:32deliberately, for one reason. If he passed out, he could not warn the men who would come looking.
24:40And they came. Two infantrymen from another company found him at two in the morning.
24:46He talked them in, told them where each wire ran, and they cut him loose. He survived the war.
24:53In November of 1946, he was handed the keys to a four-door Oldsmobile, modified so he could drive it,
24:59under the GI Bill. Seventy hours in the Hürtgen, and then a sedan and a driveway in America.
25:06Hold that image of a man lying still for three days so that other men would not die,
25:11because we are about to leave the individual soldier for a moment, and look at the arithmetic
25:16of the whole war. Here are the two numbers. By the end of the war, the United States Army in
25:22Europe
25:22had counted up what mines actually did to it. Mines accounted for about 2.5% of American combat deaths,
25:30and they accounted for 20.7% of American tank losses. One in 40 of the dead. One in five
25:38of the tanks.
25:40Put those side by side, and the German mine stops looking like a killing weapon, and starts looking
25:45like what it actually was. A machine for stopping things. It was not built to destroy the American
25:52army. It was built to slow it down. To hold a road for a day. A crossing for an afternoon.

25:59for one more night. Because Germany had run out of the men it would otherwise need to do that job.
26:06Which tells you exactly how to beat it. You do not have to find every mine. You have to refuse
26:13to give
26:14the enemy the time. That sounds simple. On the ground it looked like this. Go back to Normandy in the
26:21summer of 1944, behind the beaches, where American engineer units were working through Rommel's belts.
26:28One battalion, the 335th, dug more than 30 tons of explosives out of the ground, and removed 2,000
26:36teller mines. 30 tons. 2,000 mines. One battalion. Think about what that is in human terms. Every one
26:47of those 2,000 found, approached, checked for the pull igniter in the side and the one underneath,
26:54and taken out by a man's hands, over and over, for weeks, on ground where the enemy had left the
27:02mines specifically to catch the man doing that job. But here is what the American army did with all that
27:09work. And it is the difference between the two sides. The Germans wrote their fields down for
27:14themselves. The Americans wrote the enemy's fields down for everybody behind them. A gap goes through.
27:23The gap gets marked with tape and signs. The location goes onto a map. The map goes to the units
27:30coming up,
27:31and the field that took a company an hour to cross on Monday takes a truck column minutes on Tuesday.
27:38The German mine belt only ever gets to be a weapon once. After that, it is a line on an
27:45American overlay.
27:47Now, compare the two systems honestly, because I am not going to tell you the Germans were fools.
27:52Their engineers were superb. Their mines were better made than ours, and their teller carried twice the
27:59charge of the American anti-tank mine. But their system was built to serve the men who laid it.
28:05Ours was built to serve the men who came after. One of those two systems gets stronger every time the
28:11front moves. The other one only works if nothing changes. And in the winter of 1944, the front was
28:20about to move in a direction nobody in Berlin had planned for. And on December 16th, 1944, everything
28:30changed. At half past five that morning, the German army came out of the Ardennes and attacked. And in
28:38doing so, it did something it had not done in the West since 1940. It gave up its own ground.
28:45It came forward,
28:46off the fields it had recorded, onto ground where the Americans were now the ones standing still.
28:53Which means that for the first time in the campaign, the mine was going to work in the American
28:58direction. And the men who made that happen were engineers who had spent two years taking German
29:04mines apart, and who now had hours, almost no infantry beside them, and a road network to close.
29:11One of those battalions, the 291st engineers, would end up with a nickname given to it by the Germans
29:18themselves. Another group of Americans, on Christmas Eve, would stop a road with eight mines and a length
29:25of rope taken from a Belgian farm. And somewhere in those days, the German army began running into a
29:31problem its planners had never written a procedure for. Its own minefields, in front of its own advance,
29:38on the wrong side of the line. December 17, 1944. Malmedy in eastern Belgium.
29:4624 hours into the German offensive. The 291st Engineer Combat Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel
29:55David Pergren, is given a mission that no engineer battalion is built for. Establish and man roadblocks
30:02south and east of Malmedy. Defend the town. There is very little infantry available to help, so the
30:10engineers do what engineers do. They man the roadblocks. They lay mines. They drop trees across roads.
30:18They blow bridges. And when the fighting reaches them, they fight as infantry, which is not their trade.
30:25On the evening of December 18, at Abimol, a bridge goes up in front of the spearhead of the German
30:31attack in that sector, and the column that had been driving west all day has to turn around and
30:37look for another way. The nickname those men carried out of the Ardennes did not come from an American
30:43newspaper. It came from a German commander, swearing about the damned engineers. Now, watch what is actually
30:49happening here, because it is the mirror image of everything we have covered so far. For two years,
30:56the Germans had used mines and demolitions to buy time they no longer had the men to buy.
31:02In the Ardennes, it was the Americans who were short of men and long on roads to cover,
31:07and it was the Americans who reached for the same tool – mines, felled trees, blown bridges.
31:13The German thesis, in American hands, applied against the German attack.
31:19And here is what it looked like at the level of one squad on the afternoon of December 24.
31:25A handful of men are told to make up a daisy chain, mines tied along a rope so that the
31:30whole
31:31string can be dragged across a road from cover the moment something comes up to it.
31:36They take eight mines off their truck. They have no rope, so they take a length of it from a
31:41Belgian
31:41farm. They walk it up the road to the last bend before the woods.
31:45And the rope is too short. It will not reach the hole they were supposed to lie in.
31:51So they stand at the side of the road in the open, holding the end of it, and wait to
31:55see what comes
31:56around the bend. Eight mines, a farmer's rope, and a squad standing in the open on Christmas Eve.
32:04That is the American Army's minefield doctrine at the sharp end. And I want to be honest about it.
32:10It is not elegant. It is what elegant looks like when there is no time.
32:16But compare it with the German way of doing the same job, because the contrast is the answer to our
32:21question. A German minefield was a planned object. It was laid to a pattern, drawn on a plan, tied into
32:30the fields of fire, and recorded. That takes staff work. And staff work takes time. And time is exactly
32:37what a battle does not give you. The American engineers in the Ardennes did not ask anyone
32:43for a plan. A lieutenant looked at a road, decided the enemy would come up it, and closed it.
32:50One of those methods is better. The other one is faster.
32:55In December of 1944, Faster won. Now, step back from the roadblocks and look at what the offensive
33:02did to the German mine system as a whole, because this is where the whole thing turns over. Remember
33:08the three requirements of a private language. The men who wrote it stay near what they wrote. The
33:14records survive. The front stands still. The Ardennes Offensive broke the third one on purpose.
33:21To attack, the German army had to come off the belts it had spent the autumn recording. Formations were
33:27shifted into sectors they had never held. Divisions were pushed up roads at night, in fog, on a timetable,
33:34past obstacles their own army had put there for a defensive battle that was now not going to happen.
33:39A minefield does not know who is walking on it. It is the most literal weapon in the war. It
33:46belongs,
33:47entirely and only, to whichever army is standing still. And on December 16th, the German army stopped
33:53standing still. And when the salient was pinched out through January, the Germans had to give the
33:59same ground back. This time, across roads that American engineers had spent a month cratering,
34:05blocking, and mining, and across their own autumn belts coming at them from the wrong side.
34:11So let me give you part of the answer now, and then the last piece in the next part.
34:16The Americans did not defeat the German minefield by inventing a better detector.
34:21They never did invent one. The Topfmina was never solved. They defeated it by changing what a minefield was.
34:29To the Germans, it was a fortification. To the Americans, it became information. Something you find,
34:37record, mark, pass to the next unit, and route around. And if you cannot route around it,
34:43something you gap and put a sign on. Information gets stronger every time it is copied. A fortification
34:51gets weaker every time somebody walks past it. But there is one more turn, and it is the one that
34:57closed the circle completely. Everything the German system depended on—the plans, the patterns,
35:03the quiet markers, the men who knew where the safe lane ran—was still holding, just barely,
35:09in the winter of 1945. In the spring, it stopped holding. And when it did, German minds began doing
35:17something no German staff officer had ever written a paragraph about. Killing Germans, in numbers,
35:23on German ground, and going on doing it for years after the last shot was fired. Late in 1944, Lorraine,
35:32in eastern France, where the 3rd Army has been fighting through mud since September. A rifle regiment,
35:38the 357th Infantry, is working a single German minefield. By the time they are finished, they have
35:44taken more than 12,000 mines out of it. Bakelite and wooden boxes, the kind with no metal in them,
35:50which means the detector is no help, and every one of those 12,000 has to be found by a
35:55man pushing
35:56a blade into cold ground. And notice who is doing it. Not an engineer battalion. An infantry regiment.
36:05Riflemen. By the end of 1944, the American Army had pushed this skill so far down that ordinary
36:11infantry companies cleared minefields as a matter of routine, because the knowledge had been coming back
36:16from the front and going out to the schools and the training programs for two solid years.
36:22Think back to Tunisia, where the 5th Army could not find enough German mines to teach a single class.
36:28Twenty months later, a rifle regiment in Lorraine lifts 12,000 of them, and it barely makes the record as
36:34a line in a report.
36:36That is one curve. Now here is the other one, moving in the opposite direction.
36:41Look at what the 12,000 actually tells you about the people who laid it.
36:4612,000 mines in one field is not the work of the mine plan we talked about earlier,
36:52the measured belt, the anti-tank line in front, the marked lane, the chart.
36:5712,000 is what an army lays when it has lost confidence in everything except quantity.
37:04And quantity is the one thing a record-keeping system cannot survive.
37:09You can chart a belt of 400 mines. You cannot chart the whole of western Germany,
37:15mined by exhausted men, in retreat, at night, under air attack, with the paperwork going back
37:22to a headquarters that has moved twice this week. So here is the answer to the question we started
37:28with on that beach. And it comes in one piece. A mine is the only weapon in the war that
37:33stays behind
37:34when the army leaves. Everything else goes with you. The rifle goes with the man, the gun goes with the
37:40battery. The tank drives itself away, or it burns and it is finished. But a mine stays in the ground,
37:47exactly where you put it. And it does not care who owns that ground next week. Its loyalty is not
37:55to the
37:55army that made it. Its loyalty is to the map. And only to the map that is still being read.
38:03Germany built the finest mine system of the war, and made it depend on being read by Germans. On plans
38:10in German files, patterns in German manuals, markings only German soldiers recognized, a radioactive
38:17signature only German equipment could hear. Every one of those links assumed the German army would
38:23still be standing on that ground, with those files, and those men, and that front line.
38:29The United States Army built the opposite thing. And it did it almost by accident, out of shortage and
38:35improvisation. A mine school with no mines. A general's airplane. Dogs that failed. Riflemen with
38:43bayonets. A lieutenant closing a road on his own judgment. None of that is elegant. All of it assumes one
38:51thing, that the ground under your feet is about to change hands. One army built for a war that would
38:58hold still. The other built for a war that would move. And from the summer of 1944 onward, the war
39:08moved. East at the pace of American trucks. Hold one comparison in your head, because it is the whole
39:14argument in miniature. In Tunisia, in 1943, an American engineer had to be flown a German mine, in a
39:23general's airplane, in order to learn what one looked like. Two years later, an American infantry
39:30company could walk up to a field of 12,000 of them and get to work the same morning. Which
39:36left every
39:37belt Germany had, laid in France, in Belgium, in Italy, and in the Rhineland, sitting on the wrong side of
39:44the
39:44line. Not cleared. Not defeated. Simply passed. Mapped. Gapped. Taped. And left behind as a
39:54line on an American overlay. With the Germans now somewhere east of it, and no longer able to use
40:00it for anything at all. And then the war ended. And the ground was still full. This is where the
40:07story stops being about tactics. When the shooting stopped in May of 1945, nobody on earth had a
40:14complete map of what was under Western Europe. The German records that survived covered part of it.
40:20The American and British overlays covered part of it. Between and beneath those two sets of paper
40:26lay everything that had been laid in a hurry, at night, by men who were dead, or captured, or walking
40:32home. In France alone, more than 500,000 hectares of ground had been mined. Well over a million acres.
40:41Farms. Dunes. Orchards. Roadsides. Riverbanks. Ordinary country where ordinary people were now going
40:50back to live. And somebody had to go and get all of it out of the ground. The French had
40:57a shortage of
40:57trained men, and a surplus of a very particular kind of labor. What happened next took two and a half
41:04years, and the men who did most of the work were the same men who had put the mines there,
41:10sent back
41:10into their own fields, one square meter at a time, to find what their own army had failed to write
41:17down.
41:18The price of that work is the last thing left to tell, along with what happened to the men we
41:24left
41:24standing in the water at Omaha. The summer of 1945. The dunes of the French coast and the fields behind
41:32them. The war in Europe has been over for weeks, and the most dangerous job on the continent is now
41:38agricultural. France put together whatever it could for the work. Trained specialists, volunteers, and 49,000
41:47German prisoners of war. The clearance ran until the end of 1947. At least 1,800 Germans were killed
41:55doing it. Around 500 Frenchmen were killed alongside them. Nobody has ever been able to count the injured
42:02properly, because so many of the injuries were the kind the shoe mine was designed to cause.
42:09I am not going to make a speech about that. The figures do it on their own. The German army
42:15laid
42:15those fields in the belief that it would always be the side that knew where they were. And two years
42:21after the surrender, its own soldiers were still on their knees in French sand, looking for them.
42:27Now come back across the Atlantic, because there is one more piece of this that ended up in American
42:32hands permanently. Remember the S mine, the bouncing Betty, the canister that jumped waist high and
42:39threw 360 steel balls across the ground. When the American military built its own bouncing mine after
42:47the war, the M16, it built it directly from the captured German design. Of all the things this story
42:55has covered, that is the plainest one. The single most feared device the Germans put in the ground in
43:02front of American soldiers, finished the war as an American drawing. And think about what that means
43:08for the young Americans who had to learn this trade from scratch in 1942, with no school, no mines to
43:15practice on, and a British sergeant to explain the basics. Within three years, their army was not only
43:22handling the German mine, it was copying it, teaching it, cataloging it, and building the next generation of
43:29its own weapons from it. That is what a learning organization looks like from the outside. From
43:35the inside, it looked like a lot of frightened men on their knees, doing the same thing again tomorrow.
43:42But the part of this I keep coming back to is not the hardware. It is the size of the
43:48hands involved.
43:49Private Harry Johnson, in the Vosges, in December of 1944, is a single line in a daily report.
43:56Wounded by a steel pellet from an S-mine. That is all the war had room to say about him
44:02that day.
44:03Private William Edwards, of the 4th Infantry Division, lay in the Hurtgen Forest for 70 hours with
44:09explosives wired to his body and stayed awake on purpose so he could warn the men who came for him.
44:16He went home to his six children. In 1946, he was given the keys to a car he could drive
44:23with one foot,
44:24and he drove it. The engineers of the 291st held roads in the Ardennes with mines, felled trees,
44:31and demolition charges, and were named by the enemy for it. It was never really a story about mines.
44:37And go back one last time to where we started. June 6th, 1944. Half past six in the morning. The
44:45tide
44:45coming in at Omaha, and a row of logs angled out to sea, with German anti-tank mines fixed to
44:51the top
44:52of them, 10 and 12 feet up. No machine. One man on another man's shoulders, reaching with his hands
45:00for 11 pounds of somebody else's explosive. The army half of those gapping crews lost between a
45:06third and 40 percent of its strength that morning. They were not trying to defeat German mine warfare.
45:13They were trying to open 50 yards of water before the tide beat them. That is how it was actually
45:19done.
45:20Not by out-engineering the German mine. Nobody out-engineered it, and the Tupf mine was never solved.
45:27It was done by taking the enemy's most secret weapon out of the ground with bare hands, over and over,
45:35in Tunisia, and Sicily, and Italy, and Normandy, and Lorraine, and the Ardennes, and passing what was
45:44learned to the next man, and the next unit, and the next class of recruits, until nothing about it was
45:50secret anymore. A German mine kept its owners secret only as long as its owner was still standing
45:57over it. The American soldier's answer was to keep coming forward, take it apart, write it down,
46:04and hand it on. That is not a glamorous way to beat a weapon. It is just the one that
46:09worked. And it was
46:11paid for, every single time, by a man kneeling in the dirt with his fingers on something built to kill
46:18him for touching it. 80 years on, the fields are quiet, and most people walking them have no idea
46:24any of this happened there. That is exactly what the American engineers were trying to arrange.
