00:14Every year, the world
00:15throws away resources it could use
00:18again. And that waste is choking
00:19landfills and warming our planet.
00:21But here in the UAE and also in
00:23Uzbekistan, that story is starting
00:25to change. Waste is being turned
00:27in power and rubbish into a resource this is what the future of consumption can look like if we
00:34choose it it all begins on the sorting line we are looking at the primary sorting line at bs waste
00:41management complex in charge high volume commingled and commercial waste is processed continuously
00:46using automated screens magnets eddy currents ballistic separators and up to the sorters
00:54increasingly the sorting is done not by hand but by machine ai vision and optical sorters detect
01:01material at the polymer level in milliseconds while robotics pick at speeds human sorting cannot
01:06match this allows us to recover lightweight and complex items that were previously lost to
01:11landfills pushing bail purity above 95 this is what the future of the circular economy looks like in
01:18practice charger now diverts a vast majority of its household waste away from landfill over 1.5
01:26million kilograms of waste moves through this facility every single day
01:34almost nothing is wasted what comes off these lines is given a second life we recover high demand
01:40industrial feedstocks plastics pete pp ldp as well as hdp are converted into pallets and flakes
01:48for new packaging and consumer goods metals on the other hand are melted down into structural steel
01:54and new beverage cans non-recyclable cars are sent to waste to energy where we produce
01:59electricity for up to 28 000 homes per year and whatever cannot be recycled is not buried
02:07some of it is burned to make power i'm here in the control room the sharja waste to energy plant
02:14which
02:14was the first of its kind in the region it turns everyday household items into electricity powering
02:21thousands of homes the plants engineers explain why a modern city can no longer rely on landfill
02:28waste to energy converts non-recyclable waste into valuable energy reducing landfill dependency while
02:35recovering value from residual waste and it matters they say far beyond this plant
02:42it matters because sustainable cities cannot rely on landfill waste energy transforms
02:48an environmental challenge into a long-term energy solution
02:53for those who built it there is a real pride in what it represents
02:57waste i'm extremely proud this is the kind of infrastructure that delivers lasting environmental
03:04economical and societal value for future generations
03:09every circular economy begins with ambition in uzbekistan that ambition is being put into action
03:14a nation moving to transform how it matches waste on a scale few countries would attempt
03:29uzbekistan generates roughly 15 million tons of household waste a year government figures suggest
03:36only around five to six percent is recycled or processed by specialist companies most waste therefore
03:42remains outside the recycling system the country's response combines landfill reform recycling and waste to
03:50energy this approaches address different parts of the waste stream and they do not all play the same role
03:55in a circular economy the first challenge is the most basic collecting waste safely and controlling what reaches
04:03landfill 50 years of waste went into the ground just over there this facility replaced it last year
04:1024 hectares compacted waste and proper containment up to 2500 tons of waste arrive every single day from
04:19across the capital but the most interesting part is what happens next
04:25organic material buried without oxygen produces methane a powerful greenhouse gas it can escape from landfill
04:33or be captured or be captured and used as fuel or be captured or be captured and used as fuel
04:50gas capture can reduce emissions and generate electricity but sealing a landfill does not answer
04:56risk massane and polluted liquid known as leachate can persist for years and require long-term monitoring
05:25alongside efforts to improve landfill management
05:28uzbekistan is expanding waste to energy incineration government is rolling out a nationwide network
05:34of waste to energy plants with six currently under construction and additional projects planned the site will
05:42be processing 1500 tons of summer can waste every single day and sending the electricity straight to the
05:49national grid данные заводы предусмотрено расположение по всему региону и будут обеспечивать
05:56правильную утилизацию отходов которые образуются на сегодняшний день в государстве и возвращение их
06:03в экономику путем сжигания и получения электроэнергии
06:07that is the government's case in the waste hierarchy however burning waste for energy
06:13is classed as recovery not recycling it can reduce landfill volumes and generate power but it also
06:20produces emissions and ash as environmental performance will depend on what is burned the
06:25pollution controls used and how the residues are managed beyond the large projects private operators
06:31have also entered the waste collection 21 году president alukas azarati именно
06:38предпринимательно чтобы они развили этот бизнес чтобы это не было dotаться
06:43at household level sorting remains a major obstacle in 2024 zero waste distributed 10 000 bags for
06:51residents to separate recyclable waste only around one percent were returned sorted it's not a national
06:58measure but it illustrates the difficulty of changing household habits the projects are moving ahead but
07:24circular economy depends on more than new infrastructure whether household sorting can keep pace remains
07:30an open question from the uae to izbekistan this proves that closing the loop on waste isn't just
07:38possible it's already happening whenever people choose to act that's all for this episode of earth now
07:45join us next time as we uncover more about the work underway across the planet to safeguard it
