00:00We allow the relationship to become kind of the centers of our identities
00:06as opposed to this really beautiful kind of choice that you're making
00:12as part of being an individual person.
00:14I think that people sacrifice friendships and time alone.
00:19I mean, I don't think many women spend enough time alone.
00:25I really do. I think there's this shame involved in it,
00:27particularly like traveling alone.
00:29I think once people are in a relationship, and then when they have kids,
00:33it's like they feel like they're never allowed to be alone.
00:35But if you are never alone, at what point are you continuing to get to know yourself?
00:41And if you lose that, what are you supposed to offer in a relationship?
00:45Sometimes I look at couples that spend all their time together,
00:48and I'm like, what do you talk about?
00:50Because you've experienced everything together,
00:53and it must be a very specific way of doing it
00:56because a lot of people seem to really enjoy it.
00:57But I don't know.
01:01I think that giving permission for women to spend some time alone
01:05would be a really good thing.
01:06What is this?
01:07That's a rug.
01:08Did you buy this rug because the neighbors are coming?
01:10Oh, my God.
01:12Joe, you remember Peanut Hog?
01:15A bit of a contentious environment in here, so I understand.
01:18I love a contentious environment.
01:21The perspective I hope this movie kind of demonstrates
01:24is that in order to have a healthy relationship,
01:28you have to have a lot of individuality and agency within that relationship.
01:33So I think that what happens in many marriages
01:36is that people develop deep resentment for each other
01:40because they stop making choices based on their kind of full knowledge of themselves.
01:45They think that marriage is about, like, combining identity.
01:48And this movie is trying to suggest that it's not what it is.
01:52It's about maintaining your individuality.
01:54And I think that my opinion on marriage is that it's entirely possible
02:00and romantic and deeply optimistic
02:03if you don't cease in the active participation of loving,
02:10which is about maintaining individuality
02:12and maintaining curiosity and respect,
02:15which I think kind of a lot of people,
02:17instead, they just feel like,
02:18wait, we signed a paper,
02:19so now I'm entitled to your love and sex and interest forever.
