00:06The big news is finally out, and it's a pretty exciting development for X-Men fans
00:11who have been waiting forever for this.
00:13After all that speculation about who will play Marvel Cyclops, now Marvel Studios has
00:18officially found it Scott Summers.
00:20Kit Connor is the guy who is going to be stepping into the role of Cyclops, and that's a really
00:26interesting choice.
00:26Similar to how things went down with the weaving casting, director Jake Schreier and Marvel
00:32president Kevin Feige met with a bunch of different candidates for the part.
00:36But apparently, they landed on Connor just last week, and now he's set to become the
00:41latest actor to wear that iconic visor.
00:44Marvel and Connor's reps have not commented on the casting yet, so it is still technically
00:49unofficial.
00:50But when a source like Deadline is reporting it, you can usually take it to the bank.
00:54This whole process has been fascinating to watch too, because while James Bond casting
01:00rumors have been dominating a lot of the entertainment headlines this summer, the most active and
01:04secretive casting process has actually been for this new team of mutants.
01:09There have been meetings and auditions going on for the last couple of months, and sources
01:13say a small group of actors even tested after the July 4th holiday.
01:17So, Marvel has been really deliberate about putting this team together and locking in Cyclops
01:22is a huge piece of the puzzle.
01:25Cyclops is one of those characters who has always been a cornerstone of the X-Men comics,
01:29ever since he first appeared all the way back in 1963 in the very first issue of the X-Men
01:36from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
01:38He's always been seen as the captain of the team, the guy who's in charge, the one
01:42who makes the tough calls.
01:44He's best known for those powerful beams of energy that shoot out of his eyes, which
01:48he has to control through his visor or special sunglasses, otherwise he would just blast everything
01:53in his path.
01:55Over the years, the character has been played by two different actors on the big screen.
01:59James Marsden portrayed him in three X-Men films back in the 2000s, and then Ty Sheridan
02:05took over the role in the multiple X-Men films that came out in the 2010s.
02:09And interestingly enough, Marsden is already confirmed to be reprising his version of the
02:14character in the upcoming Avengers Doomsday movie, which is coming out in December.
02:19So we are going to have this interesting situation where we have the legacy Cyclops and the new
02:24MCU Cyclops existing in the same general timeframe, which is a little confusing but also kinda
02:30cool for the fans.
02:31But this whole development with Kit Connor is sure to get fans excited because people
02:37have been begging for a new X-Men movie ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and
02:42its library back in 2019.
02:45The X-Men universe was easily the most popular and profitable Marvel property that Fox had,
02:50and they produced seven films in the main series plus a whole bunch of spin-offs, including
02:55a very successful Wolverine franchise that gave us three more movies.
03:00So there is a lot of history and a lot of weight behind these characters, and fans have
03:05been hungry to see them integrated into the MCU properly.
03:08The new project really started to gain some serious momentum last spring when Jake Schreier
03:13was tapped to direct the movie, and then they brought in Lee Sung Jin, who created Beef, and
03:19Johanna Callow, who co-created The Bear, to write the script.
03:22That is a pretty impressive creative team, and it suggests that Marvel is taking this reboot
03:27very seriously.
03:29As for Kit Connor, his star has been on the rise ever since his scene-stealing role in
03:34the Netflix series Heartstopper, and he recently reprised that role in a movie spin-off called
03:39Heartstopper Forever.
03:41Following that success, he caught the attention of director Alex Garland, who cast him in his
03:46A24 war film Warfare, and he's also attached to the upcoming video game adaptation of Elden Ring.
03:53So, he is definitely becoming a name to watch, and it is easy to see why Marvel would want to
03:58lock him down for a role as significant as Cyclops.
04:02Now, with Kit Connor officially cast as Cyclops, the big question becomes what a solo project
04:07for this character would actually look like in the MCU.
04:11Even though Cyclops is traditionally seen as a team leader, a leader who is defined by his
04:16time with the X-Men, there is a lot of potential for a standalone story that digs deeper into who
04:21he is as a person.
04:23He has sacrificed everything in service of what the X-Men stand for, and not everyone has always
04:28believed in his leadership strategy. But the thing about him is that he gets the job done
04:34when it matters most, even if people have their doubts about his methods.
04:38It is that ensemble approach to the character that actually makes him worthy of a solo story,
04:43because you have to see him outside of his comfort zone to really understand what makes him tick.
04:47A special presentation or a solo movie that depicts Cyclops on a solo mission,
04:53away from the team and having to make decisions entirely for himself, could act as a powerful
04:58character study before he steps up as the X-Men leader again.
05:02Fans really need to see him outside his classic role if they are going to make a connection with
05:07him before his complexity and hard edge further develop.
05:10You have to understand the man behind the visor, the person who is carrying all that
05:15weight on his shoulders, before you can fully appreciate him as the field general of the X-Men.
05:20So, which comic book story would be the best fit for this kind of Cyclops solo project in the MCU?
05:27The ideal choice is the 2014-2015 Cyclops series by Greg Rucka.
05:33This is a run where a young Scott Summers leaves Earth to bond with the estranged father,
05:38the space pirate Corsair of the Starjammers. It is a cosmic father-son journey that offers a really
05:44grounded, personal character study that moves away from the traditional team dynamics that Cyclops is
05:50usually stuck in. This particular story fits the MCU for a bunch of reasons. For one thing,
05:56it strips away the heavy boy scout or rigid leader tropes that have kind of defined the character in
06:01the past. Instead, it lets viewers see Scott Summers as a vulnerable teenager who's just figuring out
06:07his identity and his place in the universe, and that is a much more relatable and engaging way to
06:13introduce him to a new audience. Setting the story in deep space also easily integrates the narrative
06:19into the broader cosmic side of the MCU, which is a huge plus because it allows for connections
06:25to other characters and storylines that are already established. And perhaps most importantly,
06:31exploring that complicated relationship with his father Corsair provides an emotional core that
06:37does not rely on the rest of the X-Men being present at all. It is a deeply personal story
06:42about family,
06:43legacy and finding your own path, and that kind of emotional weight is what makes a solo project work.
06:50Although, if Marvel wants to go in a slightly different direction, there are a few other interesting
06:55comic arcs they could explore. For instance, there is the Utopia or Revolutionary Era, where Cyclops
07:02becomes a much more radical, unyielding commander of mutant kind. That run showcases his complex moral
07:09evolution and shows just how far he is willing to go to protect his people, and that could be a
07:14really
07:14compelling story for a more mature, hardened version of the character. Then there is The Adventures of
07:21Cyclops and Phoenix, which is a time travel story that explores his deeper lore and his future ties to other
07:28characters. That one is a little more out there, but it could be a fun way to play with the
07:33MCU's
07:33multiverse concepts and introduce some really wild elements into the story. So there is a bunch of
07:39material to work with, and any of these stories could serve as a solid foundation for a Cyclops solo project.
