Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, Axial Seamount is home to one of Earth’s strangest ecosystems. Hydrothermal vents release scorching, mineral-rich fluids into freezing darkness, supporting giant tubeworms, crabs, bacteria, and other unusual creatures without sunlight.

When the volcano erupts, lava can bury these communities under fresh volcanic rock. But the destruction is not permanent. New cracks form, hot fluids return, and life begins colonizing the seafloor again.

Axial Seamount doesn’t just destroy an ecosystem. It resets it.
