00:00Your smart TV could be listening to you even when the screen is off.
00:04An investigation of tech media channel Gamers Nexus points this out once more.
00:08They say that LG TVs transcribe when you talk to someone in front of the TV
00:13and collect data like your IP address, location and device names at home,
00:17all without your explicit consent.
00:19Privacy concerns of smart TVs aren't new though.
00:22Vizio, for example, had to pay over 2 million US dollars in settlement fees
00:27for collecting users' viewing history on smart TVs without approval.
00:31Texas has also filed a suit against five tech companies,
00:35including LG and two Chinese companies, for the same reason.
00:38And it's not only about what users watch at home.
00:41Smart TVs are also vulnerable to hacking and allow cyber criminals to use them as a gateway
00:46to connect to your laptops or phones.
00:48Then they can collect data like photos or login credentials.
00:52What you can do is opt out of the default automatic content recognition setting
00:56in smart TVs, check your privacy settings, disable features like mics and cameras,
01:02secure your home network by using strong passwords,
01:05and completely switch the TV off when you're not using it
01:08rather than putting it on standby.
