00:08After a sensational 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Cook still were finally crowned as
00:13winners after coming from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 in Sunday's final.
00:17It was just their third half consensus after previous titles in 1992 and 2015.
00:24But neither of those had nearly as much drama as this one.
00:27They certainly did it the hard way, but in lifting the African Cup of Nations trophy,
00:32Ivory Cook became the first host nation to win the tournament in Egypt in 2016.
00:36That ended a run of 8 African tournaments and 9 host nations without success.
00:41But that was just the summary of the tournament.
00:43In this video, Sydney Sports highlights those key factors that made the 34th edition of the
00:47African Cup of Nations the most exciting one.
00:50The soporific end fell into the fact that this has been one of the most action-packed,
00:55drama-leading and exciting African tournament in extreme, one filled with ghosts,
01:00late trills, giant killings, turnaround fortunes and unprecedented records.
01:04Don't worry, we've got the numbers to show you why this is the most exciting
01:08from the group stages. Let's begin with turnaround fortune and unprecedented fortune.
01:14The 23th century African Cup of Nations can be described as a tournament of two halves,
01:18or the Oaks and the Heliphants of Cote d'Ivoire. While the first half ended disappointingly,
01:23the other half ended in glory just like a fairy tale. Following an embarrassing defeat in front
01:28of their home support in their final group game, not many would have given the Ivory Cooks a chance
01:34to become the first host nation to win the title since 2006, but they did just that against all odds.
01:41Despite winning the opening game 2-0 against Guinea-Bissau, the group stage was largely a disaster for
01:48Ivory Cooks. That opening victory turned out to be more down to the opposition's weakness than Ivory
01:53Cooks' strength because Guinea-Bissau were one of only two teams at the 2023 African Cup of Nations
01:59to lose every single match. A 1-0 defeat to Nigeria followed on match day 2 before the Naderi Huff,
02:07Ivory Cooks' international football extreme looked safe to send them out of the group stage in their own

03:00group games sent Ghana and Nigeria home. A man Ivory Cooks went through as one of the best top-place
03:06teams even though they had just three points from three games. Ema Sfai, one of Gissette's assistants,
03:13was promoted to interim manager and it felt like the Ivorians had nothing to lose so the spot
03:18mirrored that feeling at the time of the change. After kicking up the tournament as a second at 12.1
03:24%
03:24behind only reigning champion Senegal with 12.8%, those chances are dropped to 3.9% especially when they
03:32discover they would face defending champion Senegal in last 16. But they saw them off and then amazingly
03:38at 1-0 down to Mali in the 98th minute of their quarterfinal tie, their chances had fallen below
03:441% but until that's zero and a team is knocked out of the tournament, the seemingly impossible can't be
03:51rating off. Fai went on to achieve what Phil thought was possible and led his nation to their first
03:58African title since 2015. In doing so, he became the first person to become a team's coach after the
04:06start of the tournament and win that same tournament in an African Cup of Nations Xtreme and that is an
04:13unprecedented record. That is amazing for Ivory Cooks whose fortune were turned around halfway into the
04:23tournament. And that is number one of the things that made the last edition of African Cup of Nations
04:29the most exciting. Let's go on our flurry of goals goals goals. A total of 119 goals were scored at
04:37this year's African Cup of Nations that's 19 more than what was scored in the 2021 edition with 100 goals
04:43and 17 more than that of 2019 edition with 102 goals. In fact, at a goal per game of 2
04:50.47 in the
04:51preliminary stages, after the conclusion of the preliminary stages, the 2023 edition is the highest
04:56scoring tournament in 15 years, dating back to the goal effects of 2008. Just 4 tournaments in the

05:58Copa America in 2021 and FIFA World Cup in 2022. And although AFKON 23 still lagged behind those other
06:06major tournaments by the same metric, we've seen a huge increase in the number of 10 plus passing sequences
06:12per game, jumping up 31% to 15.2. Throughout the entire 2021 edition, just 3 goals came from passing
06:21moves
06:22consisting of 10 passes or more. The 2023 AFKON has doubled that tally after the group stage with 7 goals
06:29coming from 10 plus passes moves. That points to an increase in the technical quality of the players
06:35that participated at this year's tournament and the more this tournament is the first one in history
06:42to average over 600 successful passes per game while it is also the first tournament where passing accuracy
06:49has eclipsed 80%. That's an amazing improvement in the AFKON Cup of Nations. It can wholly get better.
06:56Ah, the next is Late Drama. The final set of fixtures in Group B encapsulated the madness of the group
07:03stage with Ghana leading 2-0 against Mozambique. Egypt knew they needed to beat Cape Verde to qualify.
07:10Cue the emotional carnage then when Mustafa Mohamed thought he had scored a 93-minute winner for the
07:16Pharaohs only for that elation to turn to horror as Cape Verde equalized in the 99-minute emerging.
07:24Egypt were out or they would have been at Ghana not conspired to throw away their 2-goal lead by
07:31conceding 2 stoppage time goals against Mozambique. Instead, it was Ghana who were eliminated with
07:37Egypt progressing as group runners all. That crazy night in Group B gave us 4 goals in the 90th
07:43minute or beyond. Those were 4 of our whooping 13 stoppage time goals we witnessed in the group stages
07:50alone this year, a figure that already more than twice as many as in every single edition since 2010.
07:58During the knockout stages, Oaks Ivory Coast came from behind late in their game against Senegal,
08:04against Simali and Nigeria to win the African title on Homsol. Wow.
08:09And next is Giant Guilings. We don't need to debate this. This is quite obvious because this
08:15tournament has three remarkable stories brewing. The first is the rise of the cafeteria guinea who
08:20stunned everyone by finishing top of Group A ahead of Oaks Ivory Coast. A fellow African Giant,
08:26Nigeria. The Juan Mika's men hold much of their associates to Emilio Nsue who eventually won the
08:32Golden Boots for topping the goal scoring charts with 5 strikes. The second compelling narrative
08:37that unfolded is that of Mauritania who made extreme by claiming the first ever African

10:24arc to the podium of glory. So let's quickly see how the AFCon 2023 has given us drama, touching
10:30particularly on Ivory Coast's story. Ivory Coast spent only 18.18% of match time in a winning
10:36position. You will say that will. That means most of their time, they are on the losing side and
10:41they eventually win the 2023 African Cup of Nations title. Let's go on. The Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire
10:45weren't far off Egypt's Afghan record from the 2021 tournament. When they finished as runners up to
10:51Senegal, Ivan played 801 minutes and 49 seconds of match time including all other time and extra time.
10:58The Ivory Coast side topped the minute plate ranking for the 2023 edition with 776 minutes and 48 seconds,
11:0613 minutes and 23 seconds longer than South Africa in this edition and over an hour more than Senegal
11:12are to play on the way to winning the previous edition which is 704 ratio 39. But it was Ivory

11:19ability to time their goals to perfection that helped them seal the title. In the last 16 against Senegal,
11:27they equalized in the 860 minutes. Take note of that before going on to win on penalty shootouts.
11:34In the quarter-final against Timali, Semua Adengras scored their equalizer in the second half added time
11:41before scoring the winner via Romao Diakite with almost the final kick of extra time. Amazing!
11:48Sebastián Mola was the hero in the semi-final and final as the Borussia Dutchman striker put them into the
11:54league in the
11:5560-50 minutes and 80-60 minutes respectively. That final saw them in a losing position for nearly twice
12:01as long as they lead 29-18 vs 16-15. Overall, at AFLON 2023, Ivory Coast spent only 18%

12:10in the winning position. That's 145 minutes 39 seconds in total. That was exactly half the proportion of
12:17time spent winning as Angola with 37.6% and less than half that of Nigeria 39.4%, Morocco 51

12:26Seliga are missing 70% but were eventually eliminated in the round of 16. Incredibly,
12:32the hosts spent 95 minutes and 50 seconds longer in losing position than they did in winning position
12:37at the tournament. How do they do it? To put that into a little more context, Seliga, who Ivory Coast
12:43knocked out in the last 16 on penalties, only played 4 matches at the tournament but they led
12:48their opponent for 310 minutes and 10 seconds in total. That was 164 minutes and 31 seconds longer
12:55in a leading position than Ivory Coast at the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Overall, in the knockout stages,
13:02Ivory Coast led their opponent for just 51 minutes and 6 seconds across 170 minutes and 56 seconds of
13:08actions. That's 10.8% of match time in the lead over 4 knockout games on the way to winning
13:14the title.
13:15Peak Tournament Football Overall, including all other time and extra time at the tournament,
13:20the Ivory Coast attack was hardly threatening. They averaged 0.90 expected goals per 90. The 13
13:26best of the finals, they were slightly more impressive in defense, giving up just 0.80% expected goal
13:32per 90 minutes to opponents to give them the 7th best average at the tournament. So did the Ivory Coast
13:38sources at half 20 to 23 come down to a lot of luck? It is sometimes said that luck is
13:43when preparation
13:44meets opportunity and there is definitely a sense of that when analyzing the elephant of Ivory Coast
13:50sources. No, they didn't impress that much at the tournament but when opportunities came their way
13:55in front of goal, they took them and with impeccable timing. And that's how the Ivory Coast came back from
14:01the dead, revived their campaign and turned out to be the winner of the 34th edition of African
14:06Cup of Nations. Awesome. Great credit to Emma's file and his team. And next, none of the teams who made
14:13it to the 2023 African Cup of Nations quarterfinals were in the quarterfinals of the last edition in
14:18Cameroon. Teams like Senegal, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Mali were all eliminated
14:25either in the group stage or in the round of 16, permitting different sets of teams into this year's
14:30quarterfinals. Wow. Letter S. South Africa. South Africa was starting lineups including
14:37nine local best players and extended expeditions under Belgian coach Hugo Bruce by finishing third.
14:44South Africa were amazing in this year's edition of the AFCON with most of their players coming from
14:49Marmelot sundowns and they did so so well. Angola. Quarterfinal East Angola were a revelation under
14:55coach Pedro Gonzalez. Winning three matches in a row having failed to achieve more than one victory
15:01at a time in its previous RPM races. And there you have it guys, all the factors that culminated
15:11to making the 34th edition of African Cup of Nations the most exciting one since inception in Sudan.
