00:00Oh, it's a nick of the line.
00:02Go on, Porsche.
00:04This is such a good race.
00:05What will we win in a drag race between every generation of Porsche 911 Turbo?
00:09And we're going to find out by racing them over the Stanley Cup tomorrow.
00:12I'm Matt Watson.
00:13You're watching Garway.
00:17What we're going to do now is go back in time, right back to the very beginning.
00:21We're going to race the first three generations of 911 Turbo.
00:25So we've got a 930, we've got a 964, and we have a 993.
00:29And I've always dreamt of driving a 993 Turbo.
00:32The 993 is a 3.6 with 408 horsepower.
00:36The 964 is a 3.3 with 380 horsepower because it's the Turbo S, a very rare car.
00:41And the 930 is a 3.3 with 300 horsepower.
00:44Here's all the stats side by side.
00:46We're going to start off with a rolling race to warm up the tyres before we get into the drag
00:49racing.
00:49So we're going to go in second gear and race over the half mile.
00:53Okay, everybody, go to level with me.
00:55Three, two, one, go.
00:57Oh, I'm in boost.
01:03Oh.
01:11Oh, the 964 though, look at that.
01:26I've got a six-speed gearbox.
01:28He has a five-speed and the 930 has a four-speed.
01:33This is close.
01:37Go on.
01:44Oh, the 964 is going in.
01:48Go on.
01:53Oh, quite enough.
01:55That was fun.
01:56First off, 964.
01:58It was all in the gearing, that was.
01:59Very close.
02:00I thought if it was a bit longer, you might have beaten me.
02:02Pause one second.
02:03You've got quite a bit of smoke coming out your rear arch there.
02:05Can you have a look?
02:06I think it might have a little leak and it might be burning oil.
02:08This is not a good sign.
02:11It's quite oily.
02:12Shall we go back to where there's a fire extinguisher?
02:15I don't think that's going to go up.
02:16I think it's just burning a little bit of oil in the exhaust.
02:18It is, isn't it?
02:19You can see all the oil on the underplay.
02:20That's the first time when a car's been smoking like that.
02:23It's like, ah, it's all right.
02:24It's normal.
02:25Back to the chat.
02:26I think if it had been a bit longer, you would have won some.
02:28Definitely.
02:29The lag in this is incredible.
02:31I've got much longer gears than you.
02:34Nick, in the 930, I was surprised actually how close you were to us.
02:39Yeah, me too.
02:39And talk about long gears.
02:40I've only got four.
02:41So you can imagine how long they are.
02:42At the top of third, I was kind of keeping up,
02:44but it didn't put in too bad a show for itself.
02:46We're going to go again, this time with a rolling from first gear.
02:52I think this is going to help me.
02:53I think you might be in trouble, Mr. Watson.
02:54I'm always in trouble.
02:55Before we race, quick sound check, and not in the way you think.
02:58Open and shut your door, one after the other.
03:00Ready?
03:03Oh, so solid.
03:04Go on, Sam.
03:05It's very light.
03:07That's a lightweight model.
03:08It's less than 1.3 tonnes.
03:09And you there, Nick?
03:11I can feel that in my eardrums.
03:13Right, let's do this race.
03:15Okay, we're going to roll in.
03:1610 mile an hour.
03:17The starter's going to start us.
03:18We're going to race over the half mile.
03:21Three, two, one.
03:26This really took off well.
03:34Oh, I thought I had some for a second.
03:36Come on!
03:38Oh, look at that pickup.
03:46Oh, hello!
03:51We have him!
04:03That's interesting.
04:08Come on, Porsche!
04:09It's close, but it's got me.
04:21That was funny.
04:23At one point, I thought I had it.
04:25Then I thought, oh, no, he's got it.
04:26And then I thought, I've got it again.
04:27And then, no, it just evened itself out.
04:29And we were just level pegging at the end.
04:31Isn't that amazing that a faster car can lose on gearing?
04:34Madness.
04:34And, Nick, were you far behind then?
04:36I was.
04:37And talk about gearing.
04:38This first gear is so long, I had to slip the clutch to slow down to be as slow as
04:42you at the launch.
04:43But that was the only time I was ahead.
04:45Now it's time for the thing that matters.
04:47Let's do the drag race.
04:48I genuinely can't see anything after 70 on this speedo until I get to 155, and I didn't quite get
04:54there.
04:54Why is that?
04:55Is it the steering wheel in the way?
04:57Yeah, exactly.
04:58Honestly, the interior of these cars, absolute ergonomic mess, aren't they?
05:04Mine's got thinner front wheels than you or something, because I've got just about enough foot space.
05:08I bet neither of you have.
05:09I'm twisted to the left.
05:11I think in left-hand drive cars, it's not such a problem, but in the right-hand drive conversions, they're
05:15a bit wonky.
05:16My feet are in the passenger footwell.
05:18I'd like to get the steering wheel a bit closer, but it doesn't move.
05:21It's like wedged into the dash.
05:22If only there was some way he could bring himself closer to the wheel.
05:25I imagine that.
05:26That's something that needs to be invented.
05:28But I am closer to...
05:29I'm sort of where I want to be.
05:30My legs are too cramped, that's what I mean, you see.
05:32Like, I want to stretch my legs out more, but I've got short arms.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Now, I've got a secret weapon.
05:37This has got four-wheel drive.
05:38It may help me, but it could also cause the car to bog down, and if that gets ahead, I'm
05:43not catching it.
05:44Before we do it, let's just do a quick sound check.
05:46I'm going to rev up my car, okay?
05:48Here's 3.6.
05:49Air-cooled flat-six twin-turbel.
05:56Sounds good in here.
06:02Nick?
06:08I think the 930 takes it.
06:10I agree.
06:11Even the windows?
06:12Put your wind up and down, it feels like it's a guillotine.
06:15Should I do this?
06:17Ah!
06:18Why did I do that?
06:19Ah!
06:21I have to have the exact same conversations with Nate.
06:23We'll talk about it afterwards, okay?
06:25Yes, Dad.
06:26Kids, if your dad's got an old, air-cooled 911, do not put your finger in the electric windows.
06:32Right?
06:32Ah!
06:33Three, two, one.
06:40Good start.
06:45Oh, that wasn't good.
06:49No!
06:50I bogged!
07:03Oh, it bogged so badly.
07:12Got it.
07:18It's four-wheel drive for you, baby.
07:26Wow, that launched beautifully.
07:29Four-wheel drive, mate.
07:30Technology does its thing.
07:31Yeah, and so does being careful with 1.2 million pounds.
07:35Ah, Nick?
07:36Was it close between you and the 964?
07:37No, it wasn't.
07:39This bogged really badly off the line, and I was never going to beat either of you anyway, was I?
07:43No, that's true.
07:44Oh, well, now let's move to the next generation of cars.
07:47I've been joined by a 996 turbo and a 997 turbo.
07:50All cars have 3.6-litre flat-six twin-turbo engines.
07:54They've all got six-speed manual gearboxes.
07:55They've all got four-wheel drive.
07:56However, this has 408 horsepower.
07:58The 996 has 420 horsepower.
08:00And the 997 has 480 horsepower.
08:03Here's all the stats side by side.
08:04The first race is a roll-on in third gear over the half-mile.
08:09Okay, everybody, get ready and level with me.
08:11We'll get it to 50 miles an hour.
08:13And three, two, one, go.
08:15Oh, this is boosting pretty good.
08:19Come on.
08:29What's happening to the 997?
08:31There we go.
08:32There's some boost.
08:44Oh, that's what's happening to it.
08:48That shot off.
08:49Look at him go.
08:53Oh, this is fast.
08:57That 996 is going to win.
09:04That's bizarre.
09:08I was not expecting that.
09:12Okay, that just doesn't make sense to me, Nick,
09:14because the 997 has like 680 newtonmetres of torque.
09:18The 996 has 560.
09:20What on earth happened?
09:21Were you in fifth and not third?
09:22No, I was definitely in third gear,
09:24but I think all that ground Sam gained in the first second,
09:27like this just didn't take off.
09:28And I floored it like your car did.
09:30This is so fast.
09:33It's so fast.
09:34Let's try another race.
09:35See if you get a better result.
09:37I've got to say,
09:37the windscreen wipers on this car are very strange.
09:40Yeah, there's one above the other.
09:41I've never seen that before.
09:43If that was me, I wouldn't turn that on.
09:45I've got a feeling that's normal.
09:46So I'll turn it on?
09:47Yeah, I think you have to now, don't you?
09:49You've made such a thing about it.
09:53That's not...
09:53Why would you do that?
09:55That makes no sense.
09:56It works.
09:57It's got full sweep.
09:58German engineering.
09:59Brilliant.
10:00OK, we're going to do a rolling race
10:01in first gear over the half mile.
10:04When the starter starts us,
10:05floor it and keep on going
10:06until we pass the finish line.
10:09Three, two, one.
10:21Oh, I'm much closer with Sam now.
10:36Oh, I've been well and truly dropped.
10:48Come on, this is such a good race.
10:54No!
10:56No!
10:57I'm going to have him!
11:01No!
11:03Come on, Porsche!
11:11I was in a little race of my own there.
11:14Well, it's clear that 996 just picks up so well,
11:17but I think that time, Nick,
11:18you had enough to come past, didn't you?
11:20Oh, I did, but it was so close.
11:22Like, any fluff in the gear changes
11:24and I'd have been a solid second.
11:26But had you, had you!
11:27He never had me, Matt.
11:29That was too close for him.
11:31This is just winning everything.
11:33No, this is a better car.
11:34I'm worried about the next challenge,
11:35but let's do it anyway.
11:36Right, now we're going to have a brake test
11:38from 100 miles an hour
11:39where we reach the cones for an emergency stop.
11:41A car that stops in the shortest distance wins.
11:57I wasn't as far ahead as I thought I was going to be.
12:00But, yeah, that's a win for the 996, I think.
12:02Come on!
12:03What matters, though, is the next race.
12:05Let's do it.
12:07Three, two, one!
12:13Oh, a level with a 996, but not for much longer.
12:18Oh, my goodness!
12:27That's the end of May.
12:30The 997's got it, though.
12:45Well, Nicholas, when it mattered, baby, you came good.
12:49I think this is the fastest manual car I've ever driven.
12:51It's so quick.
12:53You drove it beautifully as well.
12:55Sam, it wasn't as close as you thought it was going to be, was it?
12:58No, this got more wheel spin than I thought it would get.
13:01But, yeah, that car, and Nick drove it, as you said, beautifully.
13:03Right, what we're going to do now is move up the generations.
13:07Now, we have a 991.1 generation Turbo S
13:12and a 992.1 generation Turbo S
13:15going against the 997.
13:18Oh, poor it.
13:19Both this and the 992 have 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-sixes.
13:23They've both got automatic gearboxes with launch control,
13:25though this is a 7-speed.
13:26The 992 is an 8-speed.
13:28This has 560 horsepower.
13:30The 992 has 650 horsepower.
13:32Here's all the stats side-by-side.
13:34Right, we're going to actually start off with a drag race.
13:37Both this and the 992's tyres are cold.
13:40Obviously, the 997's just been racing,
13:41so that might help give it a bit of an advantage.
13:43Before we race, I just want to say a huge thanks
13:45to the guy driving the 992.
13:47His name's Ian, and he's set up this race.
13:49He's from the Porsche Owners Club of Great Britain.
13:51Hey, Ian, I just want to say a huge thanks
13:52for setting everything up.
13:53Are you ready for this drag race?
13:55Yes, I am, yeah.
13:56Okay, let's go.
13:57Three, two, one.
14:03Oh, wow, I'm ahead of him.
14:05Oh, not for long.
14:08Oh, 991 is off like a rocket.
14:19Come on, hold on.
14:30What?
14:43My goodness.
14:44Well, Ian, you had a terrible launch, didn't you?
14:47It's your first time on the show, so it's not surprising.
14:50Do you think you can do better?
14:51Matt, I can definitely do better.
14:53I wanted to give you a chance.
14:54Oh, you still didn't let me win?
14:55Nick, you weren't even in that, were you?
14:57Yeah, 100%.
14:58I need a left leg to drive this car,
14:59neither of you guys do,
15:00so I'm chalking that up as a moral victory.
15:03Let's take that launch thing out of the equation.
15:04We'll come back to it,
15:05because I want to see what Ian's car can actually do
15:07when he times the launch perfectly.
15:09Now, let's do a rolling race, third gear, okay?
15:12Over the half mile.
15:13So, here we are then.
15:1450, three, two, one, go.
15:17Oh, this kicked down.
15:18What's going on?
15:19Why did it kick down?
15:31Why did it kick down?
15:32Why did it kick down?
15:49I'm not going to tell Ian. They don't normally do that, these Porsches. Is there something wrong
15:53with your car, Ian? Embarrassingly, I missed the gear, even though it's autos, because we were in
15:57manual. It went from third and hit the limiter. Oh, you lost that then. Let's do a rolling in
16:06first gear. No excuses this time. Let's do it. I like, Matt, how you've just completely ignored
16:10I was in that race. Ian lost, apart from me. I'm sorry. I did actually forget you were in that
16:16race.
16:16So, Nick, how is it for you? Terrible. Yeah, not good. I mean, it is flipping quick,
16:21but those two cars are rocket ships. You can really see the difference in the generations.
16:26The gap between the 996 and the 997, meh, but the gap between the 997 and this 991, I mean,
16:33yeah, it's a Turbo S, so you're getting a bit extra, but blimey. You just know that every time
16:37a new one of these cars comes out, everyone goes, that's it. That's as good as it can ever be.
16:41They've been saying that for 50 years. What happens in another 50? The thing is, Porsche,
16:45no. This car, this 991, if they wanted it to be, it could have had more horsepower.
16:49But they're like, well, you know, we've got to, like, eat this thing out, make our profits.
16:53Okay, so now a rolling race from 10 miles an hour. The starter will start us. We'll race
16:57over the half mile. Will me and Ian have excuses? Will Nick get anywhere near us? Let's find out.
17:03Three, two, one.
17:06Well, Nick is off pretty quick.
17:16Is he in Adamay? I don't know.
17:25Okay, I'm losing by quite a lot this time.
17:40He is going, though. Blimey.
17:48I think it's backed up, not realising that it's to the half mile.
17:56Ian, I think you backed off there, didn't you?
17:59Just a little bit at the end. I wanted you to catch up.
18:02Are you just toying with me, you evil person?
18:05Well, you did win the other race.
18:07Nick, you shot off really quick. I mean, wow, great work.
18:10Yeah, yeah, thank you, briefly.
18:12Let's do it, though. This is the drag race.
18:14Now you're dialed in, Ian, let's see what your car can actually do.
18:17Before we get into the drag race, let's just do one last bit of warming up our tyres with a
18:21brake test.
18:22We'll see which car stops in the shortest distance.
18:24Both the 991 and 992 have carbon ceramics.
18:27Will that help us? Let's find out.
18:29If you'd rather watch another drag race, click on the pop-out banner up there.
18:31We'll scan the QR code on screen now.
18:33If you're not, stay here.
18:34Then what to do with this? I'm just going to hold on to it.
18:50Nick, you did a great job. Me, not so much.
18:54And Ian, you smashed it, mate.
18:57OK, tyres nicely warmed. Let's get into this drag race.
18:59Three, two, one.
19:06Whoa, come on.
19:09Oh, they've destroyed me.
19:11Nice start, Mike Nick.
19:16Has he been too confident?
19:24He's coming fast.
19:26Oh, no.
19:27Oh, no.
19:41Only just had me.
19:43Well, it's two drag race wins to you then, Ian, despite the slow starts.
19:47Nick, your start again was absolutely brilliant.
19:51But your car just doesn't have the power, does it?
19:52Fancy saying that. It doesn't have the power.
19:54It's got like 480 horsepower.
19:56That's the ridiculous thing, isn't it?
19:58This is mega quick.
19:59Those two are ultra quick.
20:01And Ian's just a little bit quicker than you as well.
20:03Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see when that car actually hooks up properly.
20:06Do you know what?
20:07Let's just do one more between me and you, Ian, OK?
20:10Three, two, one.
20:17Oh, it's Nick and Nick off the line.
20:22Oh, here we go.
20:30My goodness.
20:36That flies.
20:48Oh, my goodness.
20:50All those who go, oh, wow, Porsche only makes incremental changes.
20:53That is a big change right there.
20:55You must be feeling very smug.
20:57That was a chef's kiss for that one.
21:00I'm quite happy I didn't let Porsche down, didn't let the turbo 50 down.
21:03But now we're going to just see how fast your car really is because we're bringing in the big guns.
21:09All right then, Ian, you have met the final boss.
21:12992.2, 3.6, hybrid, 711 horsepower against your 3.8 twin-turbo non-hybrid with 650 horsepower.
21:21What's going to happen?
21:22I have got 50 years of heritage.
21:24You have got 50 years of heritage.
21:26Your stickers will make you go quicker.
21:27We're going to start with a drag race.
21:29Right, my tyres have called right down again.
21:30Should I keep stability off?
21:32Yeah, let's leave it off.
21:33It's fun.
21:34Three, two, one.
21:41Oh, it hooked there.
21:47Come on, turbo 50.
21:49This is close.
22:00Come on.
22:11Do you know what, mate?
22:12I think that if you've got a slightly quicker launch, you could actually beat me.
22:17I actually think the same.
22:18The launch was good, but you just seem to lift that quicker.
22:21I know, it's odd.
22:22Let's do some rolling races.
22:23We'll come back to the drag racing because this is concerning.
22:25Right, we're going to do a rolling race.
22:27Third gear from 50 miles an hour.
22:28Three, two, one.
22:31Go.
22:45I've got to ask you, Ian.
22:46Did your car kick down then?
22:48No, it didn't, but I did hit the rev limiter again.
22:50All right, let's try again.
22:52Three, two, one.
22:53Go.
22:54That's more like it.
22:57Where are you?
23:04I cocked up the gear change.
23:06Let's go again.
23:07Before we do that, let's just do a quick sound check.
23:09Rev up your car.
23:17They both sound rubbish, don't they?
23:18The soft limiter doesn't help.
23:20Do the old hack then where you put it into launch mode.
23:30They're both rubbish still.
23:31Right, let's do this rolling race.
23:33Three, two, one.
23:34Go.
23:50It's not that big a difference, but now it is.
23:52Look.
24:00It's nice to see this now.
24:02Wow.
24:07Ian, please tell me you were happy with your gear changes.
24:09I did get the gear changes right that time, but I think it can do better.
24:13The thing is this.
24:14I believe they've built this car for the Autobahn because that initial pickup wasn't what I was expecting.
24:20Being a hybrid, I thought I'd just pick up sooner.
24:22It didn't really.
24:22It was at the highest speed that it started to gap.
24:24That's exactly what I felt.
24:26Classic Germans just thinking about themselves and their de-restricted roads.
24:29Selfish buggers.
24:30What we're going to do now is have a race over the half mile, rolling in at 10 miles an
24:35hour in first gear.
24:37All right, let's see what happens this time.
24:38Here we go.
24:40Three, two, one.
24:45This is mad.
24:52Oh, wow.
25:04I mean, what?
25:15I take it all back.
25:16This is perfectly set up for when you're scooting around town.
25:23That difference, it's mad, isn't it?
25:25First gear this year went boing.
25:27So you just dropped.
25:28That was mad.
25:29Right, let's get into the drag race.
25:30My tyres are hot.
25:32Before we do that, though, quick brake test.
25:33Get them really hot.
25:34I'm excited.

26:01You went early.
26:02We're going to dispense with this.
26:03I'm just going to the drag race.
26:04I'm going to run with the stability control on.
26:06Trust the electronics.
26:08Okay?
26:10Three, two, one.
26:21Absolutely dropped off the line.
26:26Wow.
26:38Whoa.
26:39Whoa.
26:49I'm going to give you best two out of three, because I think you can do a better launch
26:52than that.
26:52Thanks, Matt.
26:53You're hanging out, though.
26:55Three, two, one.
27:00Oh, neck and neck stop.
27:02Whoa.
27:08Come on.
27:10It's better with hot tyres.
27:13Yes.
27:21Wow.
27:22This thing's fast.
27:35Ian, we could not have got better launches.
27:38We launched simultaneously, and that's the perfect way to show the difference between these two cars.
27:43Yeah, I was happy with that, Matt.
27:44It was really good.
27:46Wow.
27:46This thing is fast, but you need to know just how fast.
27:50Let's do the numbers.
27:51So then what exactly happened?
27:53Well, the 992.2 won.
27:55It completed the standing quarter mile in 10 seconds dead.
27:59The 992.1 took 10.2 seconds.
28:01The 991, 10.8 seconds.
28:04The 997, 12.2 seconds.
28:06The 996, 12.7 seconds.
28:08The 993, 13.4 seconds.
28:10The 964, 13.9 seconds.
28:13And the original 930 Turbo came last with a quarter mile time of 14.6 seconds.
28:20Now, I hope you'll enjoy the video.
28:21If you did, give it a like.
