00:15I joined in 90, in 95, you know, the then managing director was leaving, you know, he was taking his
00:25own path.
00:25And then in the meeting, Chairman Garu, he was sitting next to me and he just whispered, I'm going to
00:31announce your name as the managing director.
00:33Okay, I was about 27 then, you know.
00:37And you won't believe it, my heart started beating so fast because, you know, this is a financial institution, you
00:46know, it's public money.
00:47And one has to be very much accountable for every single rupee.
00:51We are only custodians, we manage the funds.
00:54So that's why, of course, my heart went beating so fast.
00:58That is the day I decided that in my life, Mark Darcy will be the first priority, everybody else is
01:06the second.
01:07You know, my husband, my children, everybody was secondary to Mark Darcy.
01:12Why? Because I was managing public money and I'm accountable for it.
01:16And I have to be very, very cautious about this fact all through my life.
01:23And also, you know, most people think, sorry to say, but most men think that women can't do much.
01:30Okay.
01:30Generally.
01:31Yeah.
01:31They give us full credit at home.
01:33Only women can manage the home.
01:35Only women can manage the house.
01:37But business, they think only most men can do it.
01:40But that's how it has been traditionally, right?
01:42But it's changing now.
01:44All women are taking active role.
01:46So for them to believe, when I went for my first daughter's delivery and I didn't, I was, I took
01:53off for a year.
01:53So everybody thought she's gone.
01:55She's now going to come back.
01:57Okay.
01:58But then when I came back, they were surprised.
02:00Very few women have been given the opportunity in the past because I know women who are IITs, IIMs just
02:10remained as homemakers
02:11because in the family business, there are already two boys and that business is enough for two boys to run
02:18it.
02:18So this girl will not get a chance.
02:21That's how it has been traditionally.
02:22But yes, she will give her knowledge, she will give her wisdom, she will give her values to the children
02:29of the family and groom them as very good children.
02:33But so the general feeling generally will be that, oh, you know, it's the man's world.
02:39That's what I'm trying to say.
02:42So in the man's world, for the men to believe in you and say, yes, she can run the company,
02:49it takes a lot of effort by the woman to get herself to be accepted.
