00:01It feels very, very good to be in Las Cruces today.
00:05It's already been a great southern New Mexico day.
00:09We started our day in Lordsburg.
00:13The folks at NBC tell me that it may be the first time anyone has ever gone on Meet the
00:19Press from Hidalgo County, New Mexico.
00:21So we had a record-breaking morning already.
00:28Then we went through Deming, where Gabe gathered community leaders and members to talk about the issues that were affecting
00:34them and reminded me why he's a great congressman.
00:37Talking through all of the things, some of which don't get a lot of attention in Washington, but matter to
00:41the people of these communities.
00:43And then in classic New Mexico fashion, as we're coming down I-10, the sun was shining so bright, and
00:50the rain was splattering on the windshield at the same time.
00:54That doesn't happen where I live.
00:58And then as soon as I saw that tell-tale silhouette of the Oregon Mountains, that's when a big smile
01:07came on my face.
01:10Because this is a very, very special place to me.
01:12You see, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Las Cruces.
01:16I don't mean here in Las Cruces today.
01:17I mean I would not exist if it weren't for NMSU.
01:26So one day in the 70s, a couple of young faculty members met each other there.
01:33One was the daughter of a retired military officer from Fort Bliss.
01:38And the other was an immigrant from a tiny Mediterranean nation who got his first permanent job on the faculty
01:45at New Mexico State.
01:51And the rest is family history in my family.
02:02The certificate that makes my father a U.S. citizen says Doña Ana County right there on that piece of
02:09paperwork.
02:15And when my grandmother was living, we'd come, we'd arrive in El Paso, and then we'd make our way up
02:21into some new adventure in New Mexico, every chance we got.
02:24So, Mesilla is where I learned the finer points of the differences between the flavor of red and green chili.
02:35The road up to T or C is where I first learned how to drive on a highway.
02:41And Silver City is where I had my first experience with altitude sickness.
02:47Also a very, very beautiful place, by the way.
02:51I love it here so much, and I love being with leaders like Deb Haaland and like Gabe Vasquez who
02:58are focused on just getting stuff done.
03:00On solving problems.
03:02Not about the BS.
03:04Not about what's driving traffic on the internet.
03:06Not about whatever's coming out of the White House today or this week.
03:10Not about picking a fight with Canada.
03:15Or renaming bodies of water.
03:18Or trying to rename this state, apparently.
03:24None of that.
03:25They're just about getting stuff done.
03:35I'll have a bit more to say about that in a minute.
03:38I bring greetings from northern Michigan where we make our home now.
03:41We moved there to be close to family.
03:43We got, Chas and I have two incredible children.
03:46Our twins, Gus and Penelope, five years old.
03:55When I told them I was coming to the desert, they told me to take a photo of a jackrabbit
04:01for them.
04:02Still seeing if I'm going to get a chance to do that.
04:05Told me to watch out for rattlesnakes.
04:07They watch a lot of nature shows, I think.
04:10But if I can just make it back with a couple of those scorpion paperweights, I think I'll be dad
04:15of the year.
04:18But I got to tell you, there's a lot of things going on in our country that I'd rather not
04:24have to explain to a five-year-old child.
04:27And as they're asking more and more questions, I'm taking a deeper and deeper breath before I tell them what's
04:32going on in this country.
04:35And we see it and we feel it everywhere we go.
04:38Every day there is some new insult, some new absurdity coming out of Washington, affecting our living rooms, that it
04:46shouldn't be this way.
04:49You feel it just going shopping.
04:52You're going through the aisles that, is it Albertsons around here maybe?
04:58Or Walmart, wherever you're getting your groceries.
04:59You're going through the aisle and you're doing a mental checklist to whether this or that food is safe to
05:04eat right now.
05:05Because they keep telling us something isn't safe, which might have a little something to do with how they cut
05:10all the food inspectors the moment that they took office.
05:17And then when your shopping cart is just about full, instead of thinking about maybe one or two extra treats
05:23that you could bring home to someone you care about or give yourself a little treat,
05:28you're thinking a little bit of dread about that little number that's going to show up when you go to
05:31checkout,
05:32which is a direct consequence of the tariffs and the other economic policies of this administration.
05:43And then on your way home you're going to fill up.
05:48And you have gas going through the roof and diesel at the highest cost ever recorded in American history as
05:55a direct consequence of a war on Iran that we shouldn't be in in the first place.
06:17And then you get home, but if you're renting and you've been thinking about when you're going to be able
06:22to buy that first home,
06:23it is further and further out of reach because both housing prices and mortgage rates are through the roof in
06:28the Trump economy.
06:30It shouldn't be this way and it doesn't have to be this way.
06:38But here's the thing, the people in charge right now, the White House, the Congressional GOP, they're perfectly fine with
06:48this.
06:49They would be happy for things to keep going the way they're going because none of this actually affects them.
06:56And because they're doing pretty well right now, members of Congress trading stocks while their votes move markets and laughing
07:07all the way to the bank.
07:11A first family and a president making $2 billion in one year while in office.
07:23So you see, as far as they're concerned, things are going along just fine.
07:29They would be content for things to keep going the way they're going as long as they could keep it
07:35up.
07:37Which is one small problem.
07:39There's an election coming up.
07:49And the thing about an election is we get to decide what happens next.
07:54And I know that's why you're here.
08:01Now, they are aware that there's an election coming up.
08:03So they're trying all kinds of strategies to try to get an edge.
08:07One of them across the country is this gerrymandering where they're trying to rearrange the voters so that the congressmen
08:14can pick their voters instead of the other way around.
08:17Another one is to open the floodgates to untold sums of corporate dark money flooding the airwaves and drowning out
08:24the message of our candidates.
08:27Another is to just make it harder to vote in the first place.
08:32Something that they are doing in a way that targets New Mexico in particular.
08:37And a lot of places where you have people who would be forced to drive hours just to prove that
08:43they are who they say they are.
08:44And people including service members voting overseas who deserve the ability to have a secure vote by mail.
08:59But you see what they're doing here and it kind of gives away the game, right?
09:02They're not trying to make it sound like the results are any better than they are because they know we're
09:07not going to believe that.
09:08They're not trying to convince us that their policies are working because we know better.
09:12They're not even trying to persuade the voters, they're just trying to rearrange the voters with gerrymandering,
09:18overwhelm the voters with money and stop the voters with these voter suppression tactics.
09:23And even then, it is very clear that we are going to win this election if we do the work.
09:43And let me tell you why.
09:45One reason is, and it's easy to forget this, when you live in a more conservative area or a 50
09:52-50 community or when you're watching TV,
09:55most Americans, even in conservative areas, already agree on the big issues and they disagree with Washington Republicans on what
10:02needs to happen next.
10:03Don't let anybody fool you about that.
10:08Most of us already agree that one job ought to be enough in this economy and you ought to have
10:13the pay and benefits from that one job to live well.
10:20Most Americans already agree that the government needs to negotiate drug prices and do other things to make health care
10:28cost less so that you never have to choose between a prescription and paying your utility bill.
10:34People already agree with us on that.
10:38Most people already agree that the wealthiest economy in the world ought to have the best public schools in the
10:44world.
10:52And that whether you are talking about the forests of northern Michigan where I live now or the extraordinary lands
10:58of New Mexico that we need to protect our public lands because they are a public trust.
11:11Most Americans already agree that a woman ought to make her own health care decisions and nobody ought to tell
11:17her what to do.
11:26And that in a free country you get to love who you love and be who you are and nobody
11:30gets to tell you any different.
11:42See, people agree on that.
11:44You don't have to be a card-carrying Democrat to recognize that wages are too low, costs are too high,
11:50and that if this economy is going to produce a trillionaire, the trillionaire ought to be paying at least a
11:56higher tax rate as a nurse or a school teacher or a firefighter.
11:59That's common sense.
12:07So you see, our problem isn't to convince most people about those issues. We already agree on those issues.
12:16The challenge is, we've got a system that stops an American majority from having its way, and so it is
12:24time to turn our attention to that system too.
12:26If I said we have a broken political system, it would be the least memorable thing I've said all day.
12:31We all know it. We all say it. The question is why do we act like it isn't?
12:37It can't go on like this. The corruption is off the charts. The whole campaign process, the dark money flooding
12:45our political system. Just look at how they're paying for the campaign to try to elect Greg Cunningham against Gabe
12:53Vasquez.
12:53The same donors who are backing Donald Trump bankrolling enormous sums of money to try to overwhelm Gabe's voice.
13:07You've got the voter suppression. You've got Supreme Court justices turning the highest court in the land into a nakedly
13:15partisan institution.
13:18Telling the president, even if he gets caught committing a crime in office, there's nothing anybody can do about it.
13:24Friends, it is not too much to ask that the Supreme Court have integrity beyond question and have nothing to
13:31do with partisan politics.
13:38See, to me, these are kitchen table issues. Because if we want a better kitchen table, we've got to do
13:45something about a political system kicking the legs out from under the kitchen table.
13:49And we need leaders who can see that. And that is part of why I'm so excited to be backing
13:54friends like Deb Haaland and Gabe Vasquez for office.
13:58Because they understand this. You know, I had the great honor of serving with Deb Haaland in the cabinet.
14:09I saw up close what a great leader she is. The first Native American in the presidential cabinet.
14:21Someone who understood how to invest in communities that have been overlooked for too long.
14:26Understood exactly what it means to put your money where your mouth is on protecting public lands.
14:32Someone who teamed up with us to make sure the tribal governments had a better shot at getting transportation funding.
14:37And who, even though she served the entire country in the cabinet, I'll tell you, always lived and breathed New
14:45Mexico.
14:45You could feel you were close to New Mexico when you were with Deb Haaland.
14:49She is going to be a great governor for this state.
15:00And Gabe Vasquez is a great member of Congress for this district and for this community and this region.
15:08I've got to tell you, I don't remember who exactly exchanged contact information first,
15:16but when I became, when I was Secretary of Transportation and he got to be in Congress,
15:20he had me on speed dial looking for funding for the roads and infrastructure needs of this community.
15:30The phone started ringing and it said, Gabe Vasquez, I knew I was going to hear about some more opportunities
15:35to invest in this state and in this district.
15:38And we took those opportunities, more than $10 million to replace dangerous, leaking natural gas pipes in Las Cruces.
15:49More than $60 million to get Route 70 connected to I-25 and I-10 and support the economy of
15:56this region.
16:01And a whole other set of steps that I didn't get to be as directly involved with,
16:05like making sure that the Oregon Mountain designation came in,
16:09to make sure that that was protected for the future as well.
16:17You know, he's somebody who earned a reputation as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress.
16:22Not by downplaying his values and the reason he's a Democrat,
16:26but by working with anybody who would work with him in order to get things done for this district.
16:30We need more of that in Washington, D.C. right now.
16:39He's not out there to notch up ideological victories for one team or another.
16:43He's just there to get stuff done.
16:45And I wish I could say the same about the people who are running against Deb Haaland and Gabe Vasquez.
16:55You know, I saw that Greg Cunningham had Speaker Johnson out in Albuquerque a few weeks ago.
17:03They spent a lot of time behind closed doors with donors.
17:08Less than 15 minutes in front of the public.
17:11And in that whole time, Mr. Cunningham didn't take a single question.
17:16Kind of odd behavior for somebody who wants to get elected to Congress.
17:20Or maybe it's not so odd when you think about what would happen if they actually had to have a
17:25dialogue with the people that they're hoping to represent.
17:31Like, maybe Mike Johnson ought to come back here and explain why it's okay that 10,000 children in New
17:39Mexico are going hungry after they cut food aid to this state and around the country.
17:43He ought to come here and explain that.
17:47Maybe he can come back here and explain why 87,000 of your neighbors across New Mexico stand to get
17:53kicked off of their health insurance.
17:57Why eight hospitals that serve this region are a risk of closing down because after promising not to cut Medicaid,
18:03they cut Medicaid.
18:07And maybe while they're at it, they can explain why they think New Mexico taxpayers ought to be financing a
18:12new gilded ballroom at the White House and a retrofit of a secondhand jumbo jet from a foreign prince.
18:22And let them explain why Republicans will not listen to Gabe Vasquez and sign on to the bill that he
18:29is championing to ban members of Congress from trading stocks.
18:41Come to think of it, maybe, maybe he shouldn't come back here after all, because I don't think they can
18:46explain or defend any of that, unwilling to put one sliver of distance between them and this president,
18:53even when it means that the person who wants to be a congressman from New Mexico puts himself in the
19:01preposterous position of being unable to defend continuing to call it New Mexico.
19:07That one ought to be a layup.
19:14We deserve better than that.
19:18And we're going to get better than that in just a few weeks.
19:27And part of what excites me about re-electing Gabe Vasquez and electing Deb Haaland and getting great leaders elected
19:34up and down the ticket and around the country is that it's not just about what we're against.
19:39This is about what we're for.
19:47It isn't just what we're trying to block, it's what we're trying to build.
19:53Because things could be so much better in this country, but it requires making the right choices.
20:01Technology can do a lot of good, but only if we have leaders ready to make sure that it does
20:06not lead to more concentration of wealth and power in fewer and fewer hands,
20:10and hold people accountable if they want to build data centers to make sure that they're not harming a community.
20:18This could be a country where the idea of medical bankruptcy is a thing from a barbaric past that we've
20:28done away with,
20:29and everybody knows that they enjoy health care as a right and not a privilege, no matter what they do
20:34and no matter who they are.
20:41This could be a country where people know that the next generation will have more economic opportunity and more personal
20:48freedom than the generation that came before.
20:52I believe in that and we can have those nice things.
20:56And alongside that we can have a better kind of politics.
21:00Led by people who understand that the flag does not belong to one side or the other side of the
21:06aisle in this country.
21:11Led by people who understand that God does not belong to a political party in the United States of America.
21:23I even think it's not too much to ask that one day we'll look at the leaders of this country
21:30and the state and our communities,
21:32we'll look at political leaders on the news or in our feeds,
21:37and when we see what they're doing and how they're talking,
21:40actually feel our blood pressure maybe come down a little bit instead of going up through the roof.
21:44I think that's not too much to ask.
21:52I want to end by invoking a word that has become less fashionable in American politics for understandable reasons,
22:00and that word is hope.
22:03We know what we're up against as a country.
22:06But also, I see enormous reason to feel hopeful about the future we could build if we do the right
22:15thing right now.
22:16As a matter of fact, I feel an obligation toward hope because of the experience of becoming a father,
22:23which changed everything for me.
22:33You know, we just did the 250th anniversary of this country.
22:37And I was thinking about how our kids, they're going to be there for the 300th anniversary of this country.
22:44I had, if I, maybe if I changed my habits a little bit and don't enjoy the birria and pastor
22:49quite as much as I do on these visits,
22:51maybe I even have a fighting chance of making it.
22:53But they're definitely going to be there.
22:55And when they're grilling out for the 300th in 2076, looking back,
23:00they're going to have some thoughts about what was going on back in the 2020s.
23:07And maybe way before 2076, in fact, since they are five going on 15 or 20 and turning into little
23:13lawyers,
23:14I'm going to get interrogated sooner rather than later, I think, about,
23:17Papa, what were you doing back in the 2020s?
23:20When it seemed like the American dream was slipping away.
23:23When it seemed like our democracy was getting away from us.
23:27When you had some of the wealthiest people in the country helping themselves to more and more power,
23:32and you had the powerful people in this country helping themselves to more and more wealth,
23:37and people were going bankrupt because they couldn't afford healthcare,
23:40and the debt was off the charts, what were you doing?
23:43And I want to be able to say, I was there when all that happened,
23:48and I was there when we turned it around so that you enjoy that much better life that you have.
