00:00Donald Trump's push to lower U.S. drug prices could lead to European patients waiting longer for new medicines,
00:06according to a new modeling study published in The Lancet.
00:09Trump has pushed for U.S. prices to match the lowest levels offered in other developed countries under so-called
00:14most favored nation pricing.
00:17Researchers examined 195 patented medicines, accounting for $87.9 billion in annual U.S. spending.
00:24For three in four, they found that losses from lowering U.S. prices would exceed their total annual sales in
00:30the countries where those prices were set.
00:33Researchers say drug makers could respond by delaying launches in lower-priced countries, including in Europe, to avoid having to
00:40match those prices in the United States.
00:42Drug launches in EU markets have already fallen by around 35 percent over a 10-month period, although it remains
00:48unclear whether U.S. policy is directly responsible.
00:51The study estimates the policy could save billions of dollars in U.S. drug spending.
00:56But the confidential deal struck between 17 companies and the administration could reduce potential savings by 71 percent.
01:04The European Commission is assessing whether the policy is already affecting access to new medicines.
01:08The Company's under-priced companies are assessing certain percentage at the top of these.
