00:29And yet, somehow, no live-action movie.

00:33It's almost funny at this point.
00:35Every few years, everybody starts whispering, maybe now?

00:39Then another rumor shows up, everyone loses their minds again, and we're all back to the same rollercoaster.
00:45But this time, the conversation feels louder than usual.
00:48There are finally enough little pieces floating around that people are starting to wonder if The Dark Knight Returns could
00:54actually become a real live-action film.
00:57And if you've ever wondered why people get so excited over this one comic, the answer is pretty simple.
01:03Back in 1986, Frank Miller basically changed Batman forever.
01:08Before that, Batman wasn't exactly the permanently brooding legend people think of today.
01:13Then, this story arrived, introduced an older, tougher, much darker Batman, and suddenly superhero comics were playing by completely different

01:26It became the reason Batman got darker, the reason Grim and Gritty exploded as a style, and even the armored

03:25Adding even more fuel to the discussion, an industry insider at Cosmic Book News reportedly said Snyder still wants this
03:33project above any other possible DC return whenever the timing makes sense.
03:38It could simply be a director talking about his dream project, the same way filmmakers often talk about movies they'd
03:44love to make one day.
03:45But what's interesting is how this rumor refuses to disappear.
03:49Most internet rumors show up, make noise for a week, and vanish forever.
03:53This one keeps returning every single year.
03:56That kind of staying power probably suggests the idea has at least crossed somebody's mind at Warner Brothers, even if
04:04nothing has officially moved forward.
04:06Now let's pretend, just for a second, that somebody finally says yes.
04:10Where would this movie even fit?
04:13Batman's schedule is somehow busier than mine, and I don't even fight crime.

04:27Now imagine introducing a third version that's older, much more brutal, and completely different in tone.
04:33That sounds complicated, which is exactly why the multiverse could become incredibly important.
04:40Peacemaker Season 2 introduced something called the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a device that can apparently access different realities.
04:47At first glance, that may just sound like another cool science fiction gadget, but story-wise, that opens a lot
04:53of doors.
04:54Instead of forcing every Batman into one timeline, an alternate universe could exist where Frank Miller's older Batman has his
05:01own separate world.
05:02Rumors say that some outlets discussing the DCU roadmap have even floated the possibility of a self-contained two-part
05:10adaptation existing as an Elseworlds-style story, rather than trying to continue anybody else's continuity.
05:17If something like that ever happened, it could give whichever director ends up making it the freedom to embrace exactly
05:23what made the comic famous without interfering with the rest of DC's plans.
05:27And speaking of that story, this is not your usual Batman movie.
05:31Bruce Wayne is 55 years old.
05:34He's been retired for 10 years.
05:36Gotham has fallen apart.

05:40The police can't seem to decide whether Batman is their biggest problem or their biggest solution.

05:50That's already a very different setup from the Batman audiences normally see.
05:54This version isn't younger, he isn't trying to prove himself, he's older, angrier, and much more willing to break bones

06:01Then you start adding the supporting characters and things become even more interesting.
06:06The Joker has one of the comic's most famous moments involving a television talk show.
06:10What's fascinating is that many people noticed similarities between that iconic sequence and Joaquin Phoenix's scene with Murray Franklin in
06:19Joker from 2019,
06:20including the unsettling television setting and even the moment involving an elderly guest being kissed before everything suddenly turns violent.
06:28So for audiences who only know the borrowed version, seeing the original comics version fully adapted could feel completely different.
06:36Then you've got Two-Face returning, Selina Kyle appearing as an older version of herself, and Carrie Kelly.
06:42Carrie Kelly may end up surprising everybody if this movie ever happens.
06:47Warner Bros. has explored darker Batman stories before, but fans often point out that The Dark Knight Returns probably works
06:54best without holding back,
06:56because that's simply the nature of the original comic.
06:59Then there's another detail that quietly reminds everyone how important this story still is.
07:04Back in 2022, the original cover art for issue number one sold at auction for $2.4 million.
