00:09:52I didn't know that he was taking that and running with it.
00:09:55And my friend was only 18, so I think that she got sucked into Wade's charisma.

00:10:09apparently they went to the kennel and had stolen, I believe, three or four puppies,
00:10:15and brought them back to my house.
00:10:21I got home from work, and I was like, why are there these dogs in my house?
00:10:25There's going to be people looking for these dogs.

00:10:32He said, we need to sell these dogs.
00:10:35So he and my friend took pictures of them in front of my couch

00:11:26how I stole the puppies, what the place looked like, and I did.
00:11:31They told me I needed to turn myself in the next day.

00:49:35belonging to Christine Melton, we
00:49:38ended up serving a search warrant on
00:49:39the vehicle.
00:49:42And we did locate two cell phones
00:49:45inside of this black Nissan.
00:49:48When we recover the phones, we are not
00:49:51able to just turn on cell phones and
00:49:54see who they belong to and start
00:49:55rummaging through them.
00:49:56To be able to go inside someone's
00:49:58cell phone requires a search warrant.
00:50:01And that takes time.
00:50:03And in a situation like this, time is
00:50:04important.
00:50:06So I was really playing a waiting game.
00:50:09While we were working on the
00:50:11Christine Melton case, that first day
00:50:14where we get another case, we had
00:50:17received a call at the Cape Coral
00:50:18Police Department about a found
00:50:21purse and possible missing woman.
00:50:22A police officer at a local
00:50:27elementary school had a parent come
00:50:30into the school and say, hey, I found
00:50:32this purse out in front of the school
00:50:34by the sidewalk.
00:50:35He looks in the wallet, gets the name
00:50:37and the address, and realizes that the
00:50:40owner of the purse, Diane Ruiz, lives
00:50:43just a couple of streets behind his
00:50:45school.
00:50:46The officer went to return the purse.
00:50:49And when he got to the home, he learned
00:50:53that Diane Ruiz was not there.
00:50:55Her son told our school resource
00:50:57officer that my mom is supposed to be
00:51:01at work.
00:51:079-1-1, what is your emergency?
00:51:09I would like to file a missing person
00:51:10support.
00:51:12Okay, what's exactly going on, sir?
00:51:14Well, um, she was walking to work and
00:51:19never made it to work.
00:51:21Her purse was found and she is nowhere to
00:51:24be found.
00:51:26Okay, and who is that to you?
00:51:28That is my fiancé.
00:51:30Does she have a phone?
00:51:33Yes.
00:51:33Her phone is not in her purse that they
00:51:36found.
00:51:37In Diane's case, knowing that her cell
00:51:39phone was turned off and that she was not
00:51:42responding to any messages, I really
00:51:44wanted to get a hold of her cell phone
00:51:46records quickly.
00:51:47When I was speaking with another detective,
00:51:50she said, you know, Nick, what do you think
00:51:52the chances are that these two cases are
00:51:54related?
00:51:55And at that time, I said, I don't know, we're
00:51:58on opposite ends of the city.
00:52:01Nothing so far has said that Diane Ruiz or
00:52:06Christine Melton knew each other and we
00:52:08could not come up with a connection between
00:52:10the two women.
00:52:12All at the same time, there's still a big
00:52:15piece of the Christine Melton case missing.
00:52:19Our suspect is still on the loose.
00:52:21We knew the general area that he was last in
00:52:24when he was at Mateo Graphics.
00:52:27That neighborhood was searched extensively and
00:52:31we had hoped that he was still in that general area.
00:52:41All of a sudden, that night on October 7th, we get a big
00:52:45break.
00:52:46We received a call from Wade Wilson's dad,
00:52:51giving us a location of a house that he was hiding inside of
00:52:54in Cape Coral that was right down the street from
00:52:57Mateo Graphics.
00:53:00I said, what's going on?
00:53:02So he goes, do you want me to tell you the truth?
00:53:04And I said, yeah.
00:53:06He said, I killed a girl last night.
00:53:10And I said, what?
00:53:13And he said, two.
00:53:15And he said, I choked the bitch.
00:53:18He said, dad, I'm a killer.
00:53:20I'm a killer and I kill with my bare hands.
00:53:24He said, they'll find the first one.
00:53:26I know that, you know.
00:53:28He went in detail what he did.
00:53:30And he laughed and he thought it was funny.
00:53:36And I said, where are you?
00:53:38He said, I got away.
00:53:40I found a house.
00:53:43Wade Wilson broke into a home nearby in northeast Cape Coral.
00:53:49Luckily, the couple that was living there had left the day before
00:53:52and went back to Ohio.
00:53:54Wade Wilson helped himself to some white claws, food, and clothing.
00:54:00During that time, he ended up calling his biological father.
00:54:05We found out that his dad didn't have much of a connection with Wade
00:54:10until he had reconnected when he was 18 years old
00:54:13and had started asking his parents for money.
00:54:19Wade had asked him whether or not he would assist him in getting out of town.
00:54:23The dad put out a ruse to indicate that, yeah, he would get him an Uber,
00:54:27but he needed to know what the address was, where he was located.
00:54:31So at that point in time, the father let Cape Coral Police Department
00:54:34know where Wade Wilson was.
00:54:41When the task force got there, they then invited Mr. Wilson to come out.
00:54:46And that's how he was ultimately located and ultimately arrested.

00:55:48After Wade Wilson was placed under arrest, the first interview with him went very quickly.

00:56:20And when I had looked at the phone number, immediately my heart sank because I recognized

00:56:39At that point, I knew that the Christine Melton case and the Diane Ruiz case were connected.

01:02:29October the 10th was now the third day that we were looking for Diane Ruiz.
01:02:36All of the officers at our police department were still searching the Pine Island corridor.
01:02:44Two of our officers had taken a break from searching, and they were having lunch in a vacant field.
01:02:56While they were having lunch, one of our officers noticed a buzzard in the sky in the area.
01:03:07The buzzard ended up landing in a vacant field next to some pepper bushes.
01:03:14Buzzards are attracted to decomposing flesh.
01:03:19So the officer went into the pepper bushes in this vacant lot.
01:03:26And that's where he had located the body of Diane Ruiz.
01:03:36When the medical examiner had responded to the scene, Diane Ruiz had some marks on her body that looked like
01:03:44tire marks.
01:03:45However, it was really hard to tell from the naked eye any cause of death.
01:03:52While we were on scene, I get a phone call saying, hey, Wade Wilson wants to talk to you.
01:04:11He wanted to trade a body for a meal.
01:04:15But Wade Wilson has no idea that we just located the body of Diane Ruiz.

01:07:32Cave Coral Police tonight are confirming they consider Wade Wilson, who's in custody, seen here in a court appearance yesterday,

01:08:38After he killed her.
01:08:42Grand jury officially indicted Wade Wilson on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Ruiz and another
01:08:48woman, Christine Melton.
01:08:50Both women were killed within hours of each other in Cape Coral last month.
01:08:54These two women were preyed upon by the defendant, and their murders impacted their families and shook our community.

01:13:47The totality of the circumstances warrants that the defendant, Wade Stephen Wilson, be sentenced to death for each count of

01:14:21So, I filed a complaint against the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office for not thoroughly investigating my sexual assault.
01:14:31The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office did do an internal affairs investigation.
01:14:35At the end of the report, they did find that Detective Potter did not do a thorough investigation on the
01:14:41sexual assault of Kelly Matthews.
01:14:44Detective Potter was supposed to be suspended for three weeks, but he ended up only being suspended for two weeks.
