It is an ancient craft, taking time, patience and skill. Gavin Merrington has spent nearly 50-years as a stain glassed window expert and in recent months he has been working his final job – the restoration of an old church in Tasmania’s Cambell Town.

00:02The afternoon sun shines through these stained glass panels into the Brickhill Memorial Church in Campbelltown.
00:09Artist Gavin Merrington has just finished restoring them. It's his final major project before he retires.
00:17I'll probably just keep doing a little bit in the workshop for myself in the studio and maybe the odd
00:23special job but not the big jobs.
00:26I'm really, really honoured that I've had Gavin and his team to come and work on this building with all
00:31of the years of experience and knowledge that they have.
00:34Gavin is one of several heritage construction specialists who have restored this 146 year old building.
00:41All these projects, it's not just one person, it's always a team effort. So you're pulling in all the guys
00:50that you've been working with your whole career.
00:52I think that's sort of part of the thing of Tasmania too, that people do know each other and their
00:58reputations and will work with them.
01:01And so you become sort of almost a team.
01:04This former church has a storied history. Funded by a convict, it's been a wool museum, a cafe and a
01:10family home.
01:11These days it's used as short stay accommodation. After weeks of restoration, it's ready again to host new visitors.
01:18I think there's a duty and a responsibility when you own or steward a building like this one to really
01:25preserve it because it has such a rich history.
01:27For Gavin, the project has kept a memorable almost 50 year career.
01:32Just amazing buildings and meeting fantastic people and it's been a really good career actually.
01:38Okay.
01:39You'll never forget to have a good idea to have a good idea of coming to school in the city.
