00:09I will do my duty. And in acts large and small, across America, citizens did the same.
00:18People gave blood.
00:22September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in American history,
00:27but evil did not get the last word. It never has, and it never will.
00:34Twenty-five years later, America is stronger than ever before, tall and proud.
00:41At this very hour, a quarter century ago, Islamic terrorists murdered.
00:46There are still enemies who hate us.
00:49Everyday enemies plot to curb our power and kill our citizens,
00:52including from Islamic terrorists abroad and at home.
00:57But we are ever vigilant, especially this place, especially these people.
01:06Over the past six months, we have laid waste to the world's most prolific state sponsor of terrorism.
01:12Our warriors have fought an Islamic theocracy that has wished us death for nearly half a century,
01:18that cheered on 9-11.
01:20A regime that has sponsored terrorist attacks against Americans for decades,
01:25killing thousands, including our comrades in Iraq and Afghanistan.
01:29But they did not factor in this president.
01:34The United States has killed their leaders, destroyed their air force,
01:37and their navy rests at the bottom of the sea.
01:41Their defenses are gone.
01:43We're still sending terrorists where they belong to hell
01:47and tankers to the bottom of the ocean where they belong.
01:50And we're ensuring that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.
01:56The economic pressure tightens every day.
02:00We control the strait.
02:02We will finish this fight.
02:06And climbed thousands of stairs to selflessly help their fellow American citizens.

02:19Morning, everyone.
02:21Bonjour tout le monde.
02:2325 years ago, clear September morning.
02:28Those of us old enough, I think I'll remember where we were.
02:33An otherwise ordinary day became one of history's darkest.
02:37Nearly 3,000 people, amongst them 24 Canadians, lost their lives,
02:44were killed in the worst terrorist attack in American history.
02:50Thousands more injured, countless more, forever affected by what happened.
02:59This dark moment also brought forth some of our best nature.
03:07Firefighters climbing the stairs to rescue those in burning buildings.
03:13Rescue workers working for weeks to bring closure.
03:18In Canada, our government, without hesitation, welcomed 224 planes,
03:2717 of our airports.
03:29In Gander, the population almost doubled,
03:33with strangers who were given a bed, a hot meal, phone call home.
03:39Asked nothing in return.
03:42And that's how generosity spreads.
03:48Now, Canada's response did not end there.
03:51When NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history,
03:55only time in its history,
03:56an attack on one is an attack on all of us,
03:5940,000 Canadians served in Afghanistan.
04:04158 members of our armed forces were killed there.
04:09We lost a diplomat, we lost aid workers, we lost seven others.
04:15And Canadians welcomed them home, or honoured them, rather,
04:19on the highways of heroes.
04:25The lesson, I think, of these events, or I'd suggest, of these events,
04:32is that the response to darkness is to reach out,
04:39is to support,
04:41to stand in solidarity with, as Canadians did,
04:47with our neighbours,
04:49in this case, our American neighbours,
04:51to reach out to strangers that you don't know.

05:12Today, we renew the sacred oath
05:15that we first swore in their names
05:19a quarter of a century ago.
05:22We will never, ever forget.
05:29That's why we fight today.
05:33We don't have a choice.
05:35There can only be victory.
05:37We fight hard.
05:38We fight to win.
05:40We will always remember the victims
05:42and the families of September 11th, 2001.
05:47A very famous date, unfortunately.
05:53We cannot forget that moment
05:59of immense and horrible evil
06:03that took place in this world,
06:06bent on the destruction of all that is good.
06:11But this morning,
06:12we also remember how America responded
06:15to that wickedness.
06:18On days like 9-11,
06:20we learn what a country is truly made of.
06:25We're learning right now what we're made of.
06:28And we have to be strong,
06:29and we have to be smart.
06:32Today, as we remember the many lives lost on 9-11,
06:37we also give thanks for the countless lives
06:41saved by the immortal heroes of Flight 93.
06:47In those harrowing days after the attacks,
06:50we saw the authentic spirit of our nation.
06:56We were all New Yorkers that day,
07:00every one of us.
07:01We were all New Yorkers.
07:04But we were also all Americans.
07:07We were all family.
07:09We were all patriots.
07:11The enemy might destroy what American hands had built,
07:15but we could not touch the fight and the fire
07:20and the love in our great American hearts.
07:26In the generation since 9-11,
07:29American sons and daughters have traveled
07:31to the darkest corners of the earth
07:34and done battle with a shadowy enemy
07:36so that our children might once again know
07:39carefree days and cloudless skies.
07:44For 25 years,
07:45our best and bravest have kept America safe,
07:50and today we salute every member
07:52of the United States military
07:53who served in the war on terror.
07:57It is a war on sick, horrible terror.
08:04And we salute the service members working right now
08:08to ensure the world's number one sponsor of terror.
08:13The Islamic Republic of Iran
08:17will never, ever have a nuclear weapon.
08:30God bless our 9-11 families.
08:34God bless our unbelievable, brave,
08:37and beautiful first responders.
08:39God bless the United States military.
08:42And God bless America.

12:48I've been to all previous 24 remembrances, so this is where I have to be on September 11th.
12:53I can't be any other place in the world but here to remember her.

13:06That's a good guy.
13:34We've come to pay tribute.
13:36We lost our cousin 25 years ago, and it's a family thing.
13:43I flew in from Portland, Oregon, my brother's from the east end of Long Island, and we're
13:48just here to be grateful and to pay respect to all the first responders who did what they
13:54did.
14:18And I think the message is that to be mindful of how grateful we should be.
14:24And how we need to really come together, not only in times of crisis, just every day stuff
14:30is really important, that every life matters here and that we need to understand we have
14:36more in common than not.
14:39And today is a day that really comes forward.
14:42There are people from all walks of life who made the sacrifice to make us safe.
14:49We are here to say thank you to Richie, but to all the men and women who were here.
14:54It's a terrible, terrible day, and 25 years seems like a blink of an eye.
15:00But we can never forget how great the tenacity of the American people.
15:14We have been cleaning all the perimeter of the area.
15:18In my case, for example, I was in the Holy Trinity Holy Church for 30 days.
15:23I was in Battery Park for about 90 days.
15:28For all the cleaning, removing the bayonards, mapping, barring, removing heavy structures,
15:35long roofs, banks, all that.
15:38So, unfortunately, my health has been worse on all these years because in that moment one
15:44knew the consequences that they had to happen.
15:45The contractors gave us a paper mask, which was not enough to do the work that was presented.
