00:03Rogue waves are a bit of an enigma they're massive waves at least twice as high as the
00:08ones before or after them yet these waves seemingly come from nowhere and their history dates back
00:13millennia new technology has allowed marine researchers to capture more data on these
00:17oceanic behemoths with some measuring upwards of 85 feet tall however experts like rogue wave
00:23researcher Alessandro Toffoli say there still isn't enough data to know how often or where
00:28or when they might occur still they're beginning to glean insights into how they form one of the
00:33most important instigators is wave overlap or when multiple waves occur at the same place at the same
00:38time there's also evidence that wind plays a part pushing new waves higher and higher until they
00:42outpace the wind itself Toffoli says that recent observations show that unique sea conditions
00:47with rogue waves can arise during the young stage when waves are particularly responsive to the wind
00:52but the jury is still out with regards to what role the wind plays directly however one thing is clear
00:57powerful waves can cause self-amplification where one wave grows disproportionately at the expense of
01:03its neighbors which Toffoli suggests is key to understanding how rogue waves form
