00:00His way was to teach by example and to teach by leadership.
00:05And even when I was just talking to him, even when I was just spending time with him,
00:12what rare time that was, I did not know it.
00:15But he was already teaching me, that he was already training me.
00:20And he was training me not to become an important public figure,
00:26not to reach the heights of political leadership and position,
00:32but he taught me about public service.
00:36And he always would say that you must make that nothing worthwhile
00:42is achieved without great sacrifice.
00:45So one lesson immediately that I remember was he would ever say,
00:50do not ever take the easy way out.
00:53Do what is right, no matter how difficult that may be.
00:59But perhaps the most important lesson that I learned from him
01:02was public service must be about your country and your countrymen.
01:08It is a principle that guided him throughout his life,
01:12from his service as a soldier to his years in public office and eventually as president.
01:18I today carry the responsibilities of that office,
01:21but the same principles continue to guide me every single day.
01:26Because in every decision that we make, we must exercise judgment,
01:30put the national interest first, and ask what will best serve the Filipino people.
01:36Because what we do in service of our people is not for ourselves.
01:42It is for the country, it is for the people.
01:45And you must always remember that there is no sacrifice too great
01:51for your people and for your country.
01:54It is not a lesson only for those in government.
01:56It is something that all of us must carry into our everyday lives.
02:01We must serve our fellows.
02:03We must do our part to leave the Philippines a better place than when we found it.
