00:07Spacecraft alien beings extraterrestrial occurrences they've appeared in artworks
00:12across the world for centuries some people have say they have left us other people say they never
00:17they never went away at all they look like creatures piloting craft of some kind we have
00:24to look at it with new eyes and say hey this is an unexplained mystery from the Egyptians through
00:31the Renaissance to the art of today are they representations of sightings or coded messages
00:37either way they are unexplained
00:57it seems extraordinary that ancient civilizations and painters of the classical era saw travelers
01:03from outer space and recorded their existence in art but time and time again we see what appear to be
01:10spacecraft popping up so what are these mysterious flying objects and where do observers believe they
01:17have come from UFOs are well technically unidentified flying objects they are essentially any mysterious
01:25or unknown object that we see in the sky that we just don't know how to explain as far back
01:34as we
01:34have records people have always looked up into the sky and seen things they didn't know what they were
01:40that doesn't mean that they're all from another planet it doesn't mean that they're an alien intelligence
01:45it's only relatively recently there's been this automatic link between UFOs and extraterrestrials but now
01:54that's a jump that people make very very readily we are definitely more comfortable it seems if you
02:02could say with aliens and perhaps when the radio broadcast of HG Wells War of the Worlds came out in
02:09the thirties that shocked everyone
02:14nowadays if they said an alien landed in Times Square perhaps people's you know sort of shrug it off or
02:23or accept it
02:28those strange things in the sky tell us many many things some of which are only beginning to really properly
02:35understand now
02:38but why have these spacecraft appeared to civilizations right from the very ancient times some of the
02:45oldest paintings that appear to show non earthly creatures were found in Kimberley Australia and even
02:51older some 10,000 years old are the recently discovered rock paintings of Chattisgar India when you look at
02:59these paintings they don't look extremely old they look very incredibly well preserved the cave paintings
03:08in Chattisgar resemble alien like creatures what we would see in modern pop culture as your atypical gray with
03:17you know bulbous eyes they only have four digits on their hands and three digits on the toes of the
03:25one
03:25particular alien looking character the other is of what some would say is an alien in a space suit the
03:33beings are definitely alien looking like they don't have identifiable noses and mouths one of them's
03:40holding what looks like a device or maybe a weapon there were people living in that part of India but
03:47there
03:47this is before there was any human writing there is a legend in Sharama of the Rahina people they
03:55always take one or two of the villagers with them and they're never seen again if we are looking at
04:04a
04:04real event here it will change life as we know it on this earth because we would have made contact
04:09we
04:10would have actual evidence and proof of contact if we could go back in a time machine and we could
04:18get a group of these people that produce these paintings and bring them to the future and show
04:22them photographs of UFOs they'd probably say oh that's the that's the great spirit or that's the that's the
04:28animal spirit so they they wouldn't say oh they're the aliens you know so we've got cultural blinkers here
04:34we were seeing things from our perspective and what from the the unique perspective of the people
04:40who produced this art in the first place
04:50hieroglyphs found in temples have been interpreted as out-of-place artifacts depicting helicopters as well
04:56as other examples of modern technology this claim is dismissed by Egyptologists who highlight this is
05:02partly based on widely distributed retouched images that removed key details from the actual carvings
05:09what could these symbols be messages from other civilizations ancient Egypt is about human survival in
05:19the Giza Plateau where something was happening on the earth which meant that the civilization of that
05:24era had to stay underground for a long period of time and they actually had to come out and meanwhile
05:30these other people turned up and started putting up their graffiti a lot of the graphic art that you
05:36see in ancient Egypt is really graffiti from a much later arrival of beings which have since
05:44well shall we say some people have say they have left us other people say they never they never went
05:49away at
05:55all in the Balkans country of Serbia the beauty and uniqueness of fresco art in the monastery of
06:01Visaki Dakani make many believe that these extraordinary paintings are strong evidence of the existence of aliens
06:09scientists compare the strange objects left and right of Jesus's head with the spaceships in which aliens used to travel
06:16there's an absolute striking amazing painting of the crucifixion and you can see in little niches
06:23around the painting what appeared to be to our eyes anyway spacecraft of some kind that are piloted by
06:31human beings or saints or whatever they were supposed to be at the time it was often the case that
06:38pictures of the crucifixion would have representations of both the Sun and the Moon one on either side of the
06:45crucified Christ and they were often in these early paintings depicted in terms of the pagan gods that
06:51represented the Sun and the Moon sometimes just as as faces sometimes as actual figures and that is
06:58certainly what we're seeing here it might look odd to our modern eyes but the people of the day it
07:07would
07:07have been perfectly understood what was intended while the apparent existence of proof of alien spaceship
07:14activity for thousands of years is undoubted their appearance really took off during the Renaissance
07:27the Renaissance a period of European cultural artistic political and economic rebirth following the
07:34Middle Ages during the 15th and 16th centuries art began to flourish and aliens many say began to reappear
07:47many ufologists believe the best proof of extraterrestrial existence is hidden in art from this time as a means of
07:57holding a secret in plain sight art is a wonderful way of doing it they're frequently coded with lots of
08:06extremely esoteric and very important information which takes an educated observer some time to decode
08:16during the Renaissance period you have people who had found something out they wanted to tell you a
08:21message so you paint a nice picture but you put a few other little things in there so these are
08:26very
08:26brave people because if that message is actually understood by their contemporaries they're burned at the stake their
08:32profession is destroyed so these are very very important secrets which they're trying to communicate in very difficult times
08:43in Carlo Crivelli's the Annunciation of Saint Amidius which dates back to 1486 a strange object is seen in the
08:51skies firing down a beam to the Virgin Mary
08:54supposedly impregnating her with Jesus Christ but experts have identified an extraterrestrial significance
09:04you could ask is this person covertly trying simply to describe what he might have seen in his life
09:12this is remarkably similar to a UFO with the beam of light coming out and it really opens up a
09:21lot of questions
09:23let's look into the deeper meanings of what this painting could be asserting and as such
09:30we're also taking another look at religion in general we're reinterpreting everything in regards to the UFO concept
09:42let's look at the the immaculate conception the concept of which this painting is portraying Mary is
09:52impregnated impregnated with the Christ and yet she has been with no man in a physical sense
09:59and the way it's portrayed with this beam of light coming from this circular object
10:07could it mean that aliens have somehow artificially inseminated Mary it's an unexplained phenomenon
10:17not but this is what we're considering nowadays did Carlo Crivelli see a UFO and he just wanted to work
10:24that in I suppose you could say yes I don't know of any evidence that he did here is your
10:30UFO if you
10:32zoom in on this one you can see little faces of angels all clustered together here which right away
10:40I would say are not UFO occupants you see the subject matter and it has to do with the religious
10:47story
10:48which is in the bible and it has nothing to do with flying saucers so clearly it wasn't meant to
10:55be a
10:55representation of a of a spacecraft of any kind and whatever that beam is um it is supposed to be
11:03some
11:03kind of I don't know laser beam or tractor beam like star trek i don't know whatever it's meant to
11:08be
11:09it seems to kind of a bit weird that it seems to have the aim of kind of planting that
11:13bird inside
11:14the virgin mary's head now in terms of christian iconography that makes perfect sense because the
11:20dove was the symbol of the holy spirit but did this masterpiece of the 15th century contain hidden
11:28messages despite the skeptics views doubt still remains and further evidence of the imprint of
11:35extraterrestrial beings may be contained in a painting which hangs in the hercules room of the
11:40palazzo vecchio in florence italy there's a painting from that era called the madonna with child and the
11:47infant saint john it's known locally as madonna del ufo the madonna of the flying saucer it's a very
11:54interesting painting without a doubt there is an object over her left shoulder and it appears that
12:03it's in the shape of a metallic ufo and you also see in the background there's a man and a
12:11dog and you
12:12can see that they're looking up at it so the artist is clearly drawing attention to this object up there
12:22people have drawn attention to the top right quadrant of the picture where you can see what appears to
12:28be a shepherd looking up into the sky shielding his eyes and looking at something that's up there his
12:34dog was also looking in the same direction and there up in the sky is this kind of weird cloud
12:39with light
12:40coming out of it and people have speculated that maybe this is some kind of alien craft in fact that
12:48particular way of representing the power of god and the kind of fact that it's awe-inspiring and a
12:53little bit overwhelming is is to be found in lots and lots of other paintings and it was just a
12:58standard
12:59way of representing uh that particular aspect of of pictures of of of of the divine power in those
13:09religious pictures we see them as spacecraft but it's very very difficult to escape that milieu that
13:15we're in and see it through the eyes of a 15th or 16th century person if you put the images
13:21under
13:21scrutiny what they are are that they're saints that are identified with celestial bodies so they're not
13:27actually riding spacecraft they were creating these images purely within that medieval mindset if there's
13:36any image in the renaissance period that's explicitly trying to depict a ufo i guess i would choose that
13:43one from 500 years ago and unfortunately we don't have the artist around to ask some questions because
13:50we sure would like to get some answers why would a ufo appear in a renaissance painting hundreds of years
14:02before the first satellite was launched into space
14:13scientists and art historians have long wondered about the appearance of spacecraft in the cave drawings
14:19of ancient civilizations right up to the classical artworks of the renaissance of the 15th and 16th century
14:27europe skeptics believe these appearances are no more than misinterpreted religious iconography but
14:33the information contained on a broad sheet pamphlet produced in 1561 describing a celestial phenomenon
14:39over nuremberg germany is less open to contradiction when you look at the relief of what was actually
14:46done in the woodcut it does look phenomenal it looks like you know a scene from star wars witnesses say
14:53they see these cylindrical shapes star shapes discs uh whizzing around the sky one explanation was
15:02that uh the grain that they was eating was actually moldy and and everyone that had eaten bread were
15:09having a mass hallucination all at once and a similar phenomenon happened five years later in basel
15:15a city in neighboring switzerland there was a pamphlet that was written at the times called flugblatt
15:21where this event is described these black objects in the sky large numbers of them
15:29that were described by witnesses or by the writers of this particular piece
15:33as engaging in what seemed like a dogfight like an aerial battle
15:39you can have naturalistic explanations for a lot of things but can you have one
15:43for this at the dawn of august 7th we saw large black spheres coming and going with great speed
15:52and precipitation before the sun and chattered as if they led a fight many of them were fiery red
16:00and soon crumbled and then extinguished that's a very explicit description
16:10the tales of extraterrestrial appearances aren't confined to western art in japan stories abound about
16:17the appearance in 1803 of a round vessel which drifted ashore on the japanese coast
16:23a beautiful woman emerged wearing strange clothing and carrying a box
16:28there were a series of artwork that came out from different independent sources
16:36in the southern part of japan depicting an object which the japanese referred to as the itsurobuno
16:45these were painted by japanese craftsmen and artists in the industrial age and in light of
16:54current modern revelations we have to look at it with new eyes and say hey this is an unexplained
17:00mystery that we should look into further there's a saucer shaped object and it has washed up
17:09on the shore and emerging out of the ufo is a woman usually a caucasian type of looking woman
17:19that is not inconsistent with a race of alien beings which have remarkably similar features as caucasian
17:30humans that would fall under an alien category uh known as the arians and they live in a nearby
17:47galaxy
17:48cave drawings egyptian hieroglyphics strange objects in renaissance paintings symbols which have been
17:55interpreted as representing the appearance of extraterrestrials throughout history
18:00could they possibly tell stories of visitations of people from other planets are there messages
18:06contained in these artworks which we have yet to unlock the message that is conveyed through this artwork
18:15is that there is a deeper mystery to what we consider normal life there are profound powers
18:28that play something is going on on this planet it might have been going on for a long time
18:37we are only learning bits and pieces of this as we also grow there have been moments in history in
18:47time that have been captured by indigenous people by incredible witnesses i can't see why people from 10 000
18:55years ago couldn't capture a moment on a wall of what they actually saw the vast majority of scientists
19:03including scientists who work on the space program and are involved in astronomy and astrophysics and so
19:10on don't believe that the earth has ever been visited by extraterrestrial beings
19:17but while there is no consensus there is still a body of opinion which is as yet not prepared to
19:24discount the
19:24possibility of the connection between art and science people have always seen things in the sky and they've always
19:31interpreted them in some kind of religious or supernatural context that isn't nonsense it's it's it's it's part of um
19:41human culture and human folklore and it deserves to be studied and um interpreted but it's the interpretation
19:49that is the problem that's not to say that we necessarily don't think there's life out there
19:55there may well be life out there but the distances involved between the stars and between planetary systems
20:01is so vast but even if there is life out there it may never actually make physical contact with us
20:07it'd be so exciting if it did but i think to date we don't have any evidence that it actually
20:13has
20:14we have to keep in mind that there are stories not simply paintings but actual stories that have
20:21been passed down to us of sightings of very unusual aerial objects human beings were not in the air at
20:30that
20:30time now are all of those stories reliable because a lot of them aren't probably reliable but the fact
20:38is that there are a lot of these stories and some of them don't strike one as simply figments of
20:44the
20:45imagination so i leave it open and i think when you look at these artistic renderings you've got to keep
20:52that in mind as well i believe that it is still unexplained but it sure isn't an open and shut
21:00case
21:06apparitions supernatural appearances by religious figures phenomena frequently rejected by the catholic
21:12church if you're claiming something like this you're up against it a religious figure appears and no one can
21:21explain why a vision of the virgin mary reveals herself from the sky she would see colored lights
21:27start streaming from up above from the mountains of the south of france to the busy streets of new york
21:33apparitions have dumbfounded science and entranced believers visions and apparitions have been around
21:41for thousands of years are they merely the figment of the imaginations of religious zealots the product of
21:47crude technology or something supernatural either way they're unexplained as the church says the world the
21:54flesh of the devil
22:09what is this phenomenon we called an apparition is it really possible that the images of saints can appear
22:15out of nowhere and when they do only appear to certain people an apparition is the appearance
22:24in real time of a kind of a heavenly or a divine creature in our time in real time a
22:30visual manifestation
22:32of a ghost or a spirit and it's a claim that's made by believers may either see a vision of
22:40a saint or
22:41a vision of a dead person
22:48the catholic church has struggled with the legitimacy of divine apparitions for centuries
22:53these sightings these apparitions have been dismissed by the vatican but that does not stop thousands of
23:00people across the world for believing it and going to visit the catholic church itself is unbelievably strict
23:06about this and therefore when something like that happens there's a whole process to be gone through
23:13and it can be investigated for years and decades before the church will say that they are happy with
23:19it a lot of people begin to turn up at the place then i think the local bishop in rome
23:24would feel well
23:24there's so many of what they call the faithful turning up at this site we really need to take a
23:30stand on
23:30it and say whether or not we as a church believe this to be genuine but apparitions are not just
23:37the
23:37preserve of organized religion
23:43the ofteni or the appearance of a deity to humans dates back to the mythology of ancient civilizations
23:51visions and apparitions have been around for thousands of years the ancient greeks believed them
23:56the pharaohs walking amongst the egyptians people still believe that they haven't gone away even now
24:03thousands of years later
24:09some say that apparitions happen to people experiencing pareidolia a condition which causes
24:14people to receive patterns in their mind pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that causes people to
24:20perceive patterns in random stimulus the brain is hardwired to take essentially a signal from noise
24:26that's how we're able to make a sense of the all the sense of information that our senses are
24:30bombarded with and but occasionally we can detect patterns where there's none actually present and
24:35some well-known examples of that might be for instance the illusion of the face on mars or people
24:40hearing messages in records that are played backwards
24:47researchers have found that women are more likely to see faces in things than men and this is believed
24:53because women have a greater interest in social information the most common form of pareidolia would
24:59be what's called the illusory face perception and that's the tendency to see faces where there's none
25:05actually present and that's thought to have an evolutionary advantage because if we're able to see a face
25:10present we're actually going to be able to detect a predator's face so ancient ancestors from thousands of
25:17years ago that were better able to detect a predator's face had an evolutionary advantage
25:24people in negative moods have been found to be more likely to experience pareidolia
25:28and this is taught because these people are more in a sense of alert they're more aware of danger
25:37religious pareidolia is a specific form of pareidolia where people see religious icons
25:42religious people who experience pareidolia are more likely to see icons and events related to their
25:47own religion so for instance christians will see things like images of the virgin mary or jesus christ
25:53whereas muslims are more likely to see for instance the word allah in text
25:59these sightings can occasionally border on the bazaar
26:03and one such marian apparition happened in 2009 when two groundsmen were cutting down a tree in a churchyard
26:10the tree stump in rath keel in limerick in ireland where people still pay pilgrimage to
26:18they actually go along with their rosary beads and they say a prayer
26:22in ontario 2003 where a fish stick actually had jesus's head on it could you believe it another
26:30apparition of jesus's head on a fish stick there's also a grilled cheese sandwich in 2004
26:38uh where you can see the virgin mary's head inside it and it sold on ebay for 28 000 dollars
26:48in 2011 in brisbane on the gold coast in australia in a three cheese pizza jesus was spotted
26:55a jesus pizza another apparition
27:00and what about the virgin mary appearing on a piece of furniture in 2019 in carrie in ireland inside
27:07an antique store inside a cabinet in the door was an image of the virgin mary
27:16somebody remarked on well this looks a bit like you know um the virgin mary i think that was the
27:23term
27:23that was used and and uh so first of all we said oh yeah yeah okay okay so we we
27:28didn't uh take that
27:30very seriously at first so we put it on facebook and asked the question well what do you see or
27:37can
27:37you see what people are seeing uh coming into the shop people started sharing it and by the time the
27:45newspapers got hold of it it had something like 10 000 views eventually the local newspaper got it
27:53and they ran it and then it went radio carry and and so on and so forth and then national
27:59newspapers had
27:59it and then national tv we were just hanging on with our fingernails basically and uh trying to
28:05keep up with this thing we still get people every day wanting to see the cabinet
28:12so religious appearances could often stretch credulity but one thing is clear apparitions can
28:19be loosely defined by the random nature of those they appear to because we live in this world
28:27we're terribly bound in time and space and a lot of people have this notion that heaven is up there
28:33we're down here and i actually think more and more people are becoming to realize that
28:39really the supernatural world is almost wrapped around us in the natural world and the way i like
28:45to explain it to people is that it's almost like as if the two worlds are side by side but
28:50separated by
28:51something as flimsy as a lace curtain and if there's a little breeze an ethereal breeze
28:57the curtain will blow back and something will go from one world into the other etc that's the context
29:04in which i think people need to see it and and not to be too kind of physical or mathematical
29:09about the
29:10whole thing 1968 queens new york city in a small suburban house a couple of miles from la guardia airport
29:20a housewife named veronica lucan begins to see visions of saint therese of lazoux the celebrated french
29:27saint known as the little flower veronica then witnessed more appearances at a site close to her home
29:35and apparently in a state of grace if somebody went up to prick her or to do something to her
29:42she would be oblivious to it but she didn't body didn't change skin didn't change she's still veronica
29:49just she you could see she was looking at something according to veronica it was the virgin mary jesus
29:57and some catholic saints appearing only to her she would see colored lights start streaming from up above
30:04and that was her signal get ready hundreds of followers flocked to bayside every week to hear
30:10veronica speak she would describe a vision of the virgin mary and would repeat what she claimed the
30:15apparition had said i did not ask for women to be upon the altar nor try to be a high
30:27tree sense they
30:28carry this on in the churches of satan but could it have happened and why did it happen to just
30:36one
30:37person and so many times were the spirits up above who needed to speak through her and why veronica
30:44they felt she was the one that could get the message out and that she wouldn't capitulate and she wouldn't
30:50fall away the happenings in bayside new york in the 1970s further demonstrate that apparitions can
30:58happen to anyone could apparitions have appeared to veronica lucan the fact that she was an average
31:05person seemed to substantiate the claims that the saints who do appear do so to ordinary people at
31:11random she was wife mother grandmother she was a mother of five just a sweet motherly type woman who
31:22knew that she got a call from heaven and had to do her job veronica was religious but not fanatically
31:29so
31:31not particularly distinguished really as particularly being religious our lady and our lord appeared to
31:40veronica of the cross to alert the world there will be a great chastisement in the form of world war
31:49three and a ball of redemption or a comet in which billions will perish the message of the virgin who
31:57appeared to veronica was simple she would just repeat what the virgin mary said the word of russia is not
32:09good for what communism means is liars straight from the bowels of hell the pope john paul ii and all
32:22the
32:23traditions of the world must allot one day on which they will pray for the conversion of russia or else
32:35nations shall disappear from the face of the earth
32:42veronica lucan however failed to secure the backing of the vatican
32:46the popes of the past uh found it very hard to believe not none of them that i know of
32:51believed you
32:51know of during the apparition and we had gone we had spoken to pope john paul ii
32:58we gave the messages and everything and told him that he needed to consecrate russia and
33:03you know he he got mad at me and i gave him the message he said i consecrated russia i
33:10said no you
33:10didn't you consecrated the world yes i have so and then the next time i saw him it was super
33:15nicely he
33:15he realized he lost his cool all of which demonstrates the church's frustration with apparitions
33:23and doesn't go any further to explain just how they happen
33:28but where religious apparitions began to make international news was in a small town in southern
33:33france on a winter's afternoon in 1858 the virgin mary appeared to a 14 year old farm girl
33:41bernadette subaru close to a tiny town called lourdes bernadette was subsequently made a saint by the
33:48church lourdes is now the center of a pilgrimage for people who believe that the water at the grotto
33:54where the apparition appeared has healing powers i'm a great devotee of lourdes i've been there 28 times
34:04and certainly i believe in lourdes i love the grotto in lourdes where our lady has appeared
34:10but i'm also very struck at the millions of ordinary struggling people and sick people who go there
34:16and get hope so for me the greatest miracle of lourdes i think is the people who go there in
34:22despair
34:22and come away and hope saint bernadette's vision of the apparitions of the virgin mary has led to the
34:29continuing popularity of the grotto at lourdes and now the apparition is widely acknowledged as
34:35legitimate by the catholic church saint bernadette very quickly became a nun and when she entered the
34:42convent the nuns treated her terribly the local church in particular gave her a hard time they claimed
34:49she'd made it all up she was treated very harshly by her parish priest very harshly by the bishop of
34:56the
34:57diocese basically if you're claiming something like this you're up against it
35:05the church however acknowledged as real the apparition which appeared to three children in fatima central
35:11portugal in 1917 deeming the sightings worthy of belief but more recently in medjugorje in bosnia
35:19herzegovina where the virgin has apparently been appearing since 1981 the church has reserved its position
35:27so what makes an apparition legitimate what does it take for the church to take one seriously
35:32and could the appearance of the virgin be supernatural or just a confidence trick
35:42apparitions it seems can appear in the strangest of places
35:46in a small village called knock in the west of ireland an event on an august evening in 1879 began
35:52another celebrated apparition story the people who saw the knock apparition came from small little
35:58hatched houses they were had small holdings of land they grew potatoes they grew some oats to pay the
36:05rent and really they lived a very um simple way of life on the night of august 21st an apparition
36:12of
36:12the virgin mary appeared on the gable wall of the local church the first two people to come to walk
36:19by the
36:19church and see it were mary byrne and the priest housekeeper mary mclaughlin and they saw what they
36:24described as an amazing sight a group of people claimed to have seen a vision of the virgin mary
36:31accompanied by saint joseph and saint john the evangelist they saw an altar on which stood a lamb
36:37and behind that a large upright cross and the sightings quickly led to apparent miracles
36:47ten days after the apparition the first cure was reported at knock and it was a little girl who
36:52according to her mother was cured of deafness once people heard of that cure hundreds of people came
36:57to knock with walking sticks and crutches and hundreds of people said they were cured the church quickly
37:02took a hold of things and established a commission to investigate several prominent clergy from the
37:08county descended on knock and recorded testimony from a number of witnesses they took down handwritten
37:14accounts of the witnesses descriptions of what they saw one of the witnesses was on his farm of land
37:20about a mile away from the church and he described seeing a very very large bright light surrounding the
37:27wall where the apparition took place they concluded at the end of this that they were satisfied that
37:33the witnesses accounts were trustworthy and satisfactory the church is kind of bringing its weight its history
37:40its theology its spirituality and saying in our opinion we believe this to have been a true apparition
37:50but is there a plausible explanation for what occurred apparently that year 1879
37:55even though it was after the famine was a year in which the potato crop had failed again
38:01and so people were probably hungry and distressed it's almost as though people are seeking comfort or
38:07seeking some kind of solace also people are very suggestible so dire times led to sharpened imaginations
38:18and there may have been an alignment in the heavens there was an attempt made to reenact what the
38:25conditions were at the time and this was arranged by an investigator who worked with an astronomer to
38:31figure out what the circumstances in the sky were like at the time and he argued essentially that
38:39the way the light was reflected from the sun that it could have hit windows in a school that was
38:46nearby
38:47which had windows which had these statues in it and they were projected onto the wall in the manner
38:53of a projector or a magic lantern which would have become popular at the time
38:59magic lanterns first created in the 1600s provided spectacular entertainment in the way cinema does today
39:08powered by gaslight they could project images onto a screen or a wall to unsophisticated rural
39:15communities projections of the magic lanterns could fascinate and astonish the fact that the figures
39:21were projected onto the gable wall would suggest something like that and they were also said to have
39:29been levitated off the ground by a couple of feet which again would be consistent with some kind of
39:36projection or projective variable so it's likely that there was something on the wall
39:43however when the church accepts the legitimacy of a sighting it can have a remarkable impact
39:50knock has become very famous and has been visited by two popes which lended more credibility to the
39:58stories connected with it pope john paul ii saint john paul now came in 1979 and almost half a million
40:05people came to see him last year we had pope francis who came here and about i think maybe 40
40:11or 45 000
40:12people were here on the day a lot of these shrines do end up operating in a business-like manner
40:18because
40:18a lot of money starts to come in from people who visit whether that's through donations or requests
40:24for specific amounts of money supernatural crude technology or genuine religious occurrences
40:32apparitions remain a mystery devotees to marian apparitions have historically taken what they have
40:40seen at face value and believe in the infallibility of those they speak to for followers of veronica of
40:47bayside queens there's no doubt about her legitimacy eventually whenever that time will be when the catholic
40:56church will recognize her and raise her to sainthood that i don't think anybody's gonna ever forget it
41:02could there possibly be a scientific explanation for the many religious figures who've appeared over
41:08the centuries being able to split in your mind two separate world views one being supernatural and one
41:18being natural and there are people who are well able to look at the natural world and examine that in
41:25an
41:25objective way while at the same time accepting a separate supernatural world on the basis of their
41:32faith i believe things like that can be a gift from god to comfort us on our spiritual journey when
41:40people have beliefs they're often irrational and it's not to do with being sane or insane or intelligent
41:47or unintelligent there are many scientists who are very strong religious believers although the vast
41:55majority of scientists are not and the religious beliefs would run in contradiction to a lot of what science is
