00:00These things are loud, really loud. When they detonate, shockwaves are created that
00:06abruptly release pressure and sound. This generates an intense impulse noise that
00:13differs from the smoother combustion of conventional rocket engines. Tests of RDAs,
00:19for example, by NASA or the Air Force Research Laboratory, show that they can generate sound
00:26pressure levels, or SPL for short, of over 180 to 200 decibels in close proximity. For comparison,
00:35Space Axis Raptor reaches about 180 to 190 decibels near the nozzle. The space shuttle
00:40registered around 180 decibels at a distance of 100 meters. While the Saturn V at 204 decibels
00:51is considered one of the loudest machines. The constant detonations subject the materials
00:57to extreme stress, which in turn shortens their lifespan and increases maintenance requirements.
