00:00Republicans have wrapped night one of their first ever midterm convention here in Dallas, Texas.
00:05It was President Donald Trump who was the headliner, highlighting how much the convention is really about him
00:10and trying to turn out his voters in a year at which he's not at the top of the ticket.
00:14The president once again called on voters to pretend like he's on the ballot,
00:18and in the biggest news of the night, pledged to send adult American citizens a $5,000 Trump dividend
00:24if the House and Senate are both won by Republicans.
00:27He also said that money would need to be spent in the U.S., though it's not exactly clear how
00:32that would work.
00:33The president also defended his war against Iran and touted his tax and economic policies in his speech
00:38that ran about an hour and 45 minutes long, though he once again called the issue of affordability
00:43an animating factor, according to polls for voters in this midterm, as fake.
00:49The president gave shout-outs to the Senate candidates running in North Carolina, Michigan, and right here in Texas,
00:54Michael Watley, Mike Rogers, and Ken Paxton, and he cast their Democratic opponents as far-left extremists.
01:01But one Democrat delivered a surprise video cameo at the convention on night one,
01:06Senator John Fetterman at Pennsylvania, who praised Donald Trump and his colleague,
01:10Senator Dave McCormick, for helping the steel industry.
01:14McCormick was one of the speakers on night one, as were a number of cabinet officials,
01:18including the Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessett.
01:21Paxton and Watley both spoke as well, while Mike Rogers has a speaking slot on night two.
01:26Because, yes, there is a second night coming up here in Dallas that will feature a keynote address
01:30from the vice president, J.D. Vance.
01:33But there will be more Donald Trump tonight as well,
01:35as the president is planning to deliver closing remarks,
01:38giving him the last word of this unconventional convention.
