What is Juneteenth, and why is June 19 so important? βœŠπŸΎβ€οΈπŸ’šπŸ–€

In this video, we're exploring interesting and powerful facts about Juneteenth, one of the most significant dates in African American history.

On June 19, 1865, Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that enslaved people in Texas were free. This came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

More than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas were affected by the enforcement of emancipation there. Juneteenth developed into an annual celebration of freedom and is recognized as the oldest known U.S. celebration commemorating the end of slavery.

But here's another important fact: Juneteenth itself did not legally abolish slavery throughout the entire United States. The ratification of the 13th Amendment in December 1865 accomplished nationwide constitutional abolition, subject to its exception for punishment for crime.

Juneteenth was officially established as a federal holiday in 2021. Today, celebrations include family gatherings, festivals, parades, education, reflection, and recognition of African American history, culture, resilience, and achievement.
