00:07only seven of Spain's eleven for the opening game with Norway survived for the next outing
00:12and Kibacho ticked again for Yugoslavia now he's settled on a side that he hopes can harness
00:17attacking instincts with a need to counter French pace and guile. Piero is still injured
00:22so Paco partners Abelardo at the back and Benitez who did so well as a scoring substitute against
00:28the Yugoslavs he keeps his place wide on the flank in support of Raul and Tugo Alfonso
00:35such is French morale and confidence that even their second string then were good enough to hold
00:39their own against the Dutch at the final group match tonight it's back mainly to the recognized
00:44first team although Manu Petit is injured and Niklas Adelka left out the era starts and so do Droghuev and
00:51Dugari
01:19the
01:21the
01:21The highly regarded Italian Gianluigi Colina takes the whistle, with England's Philip Sharp one of his assistants.
02:04It's France then to kick off, their players crash off from having rested, most of them anyway, but being rested
02:12for the game against the Dutch, Spain of course had to go flat out with that 4-3 win over
02:17Yugoslavia, I wonder David what you feel, what impact you feel that might have made.
02:20It should give the French an advantage, however there was four players who didn't play in that early defeat by
02:26Norway for Spain, a defeat that Camacho has obviously learnt from, Paco, Mendieta, Munitis and Alphonso, all didn't play in
02:36that opening game, all playing here this evening, so they should be raring to go.
02:39Here's Deschamps for France, Dugarry, preferred then to Niklas Anelka, in the firing line for France.
02:49That was Arant Sabal, full range of emotions experienced by Spain in that extraordinary game with Yugoslavia, teetering on the
03:03brink of elimination, one minute top of the group, the next.
03:06They will certainly enter this contest, battle-harden, their attacking player for most teams, it's a match for them really,
03:14when they do piece it all together.
03:17But defensively, might they be a wonder too brittle against the subtle promptings of this man, Zidane, out go.
03:23Here he is now, Zinedine Zidane.
03:31And Colina has given the free kick.
03:36Chorab who'd advanced.
03:42It's Benitez who went into the back end of the Parma defender.
03:50Chorab who can't be so adventurous when the mood takes him.
03:58Zidane then, with this free kick.
04:06There's an awful lot of movement in there.
04:11No rep-product from Patrick Vieira.
04:17There's a nice curved ball by Zidane, there you see him looking, looking, seeking.
04:22Vieira, getting into the position for quite a clean header.
04:34Vieira.
04:36Outdoor shot.
04:39This is Turam.
04:43Coming for Dugarri.
04:48Mendiator sweeping it forward then, to Raul.
04:52Lunita is the option to his left, he's got Alfonso, and Mendiator in support here too.
04:58Mendiator, no way through.
05:00Blanc and Bashock kept the door firmly shut then.
05:07They have played together so long, most of this French team, three tournaments now.
05:11They know each other's game inside out.
05:18Turam who plays in the circle of defensive goals for Parma.
05:22And the Italian Serie A right back for France.
05:25France just looked a bit narrow on the left-hand side of the field.
05:30They will hope that...
05:33...Lizaz Zaru from the left-back position will come forward.
05:42This is Dugarri who's gone down, rather heavily too.
05:46Over the way to that challenge from Salgado.
05:53No further action taken by Kalina, another one to give the free kick.
05:57The French team hoping to be the first World Cup winners to follow that success with a European title.
06:04Germany, of course, did it the other way around, back in the early 70s.
06:10Lizarazu.
06:13Dugarri.
06:14Now's Ida.
06:15Dugarri here.
06:18Williams to fall through up to this French side.
06:24And Peyronth, Dugarri.
06:27The throw to France.
06:33Jokers.
06:37Now Patrick Vieira.
06:40Dugarri, who's a special act here.
06:42Vieira.
06:52He's had a pretty fierce haircut since the first couple of games.
06:58Deschamps have a splendid turn.
07:00Good chance towards Dugarri.
07:02Came flying in far post.
07:07Took a knock in the process.
07:10He's had a little turn by Deschamps.
07:13And an inviting cross, and they just caught heads.
07:17There's Dugarri doing what he's quite good at, coming in from the flanks and heading for goal.
07:25Scored a headed goal, of course, against Holland in that final group game.
07:30He certainly caught the coach's eye.
07:33It's his inclusion from the start again, this evening.
07:39Melchero, who's come out to the Spanish side over the past couple of games or so.
07:46There's a bit of fight in midfield.
07:48But this was Dugarri and Salgado.
07:50A clash of heads.
07:56Very thankful for Dugarri, of Bordeaux.
08:02He certainly can't continue for the moment.
08:10Dugarri, who has said about enhancing his reputation again,
08:13and he took a bit of a taunting in the World Cup.
08:15He came in for a lot of criticism, despite his country's success.
08:22Zidane, measured ball to Patrick Vieira.
08:26Good play by the Arsenal man, which it was initially.
08:29Yes, Munites.
08:32He's only 5'6", but boy, can he finish.
08:38Tackle.
08:39From Real Zaragoza.
08:41Salgado.
08:46Agera.
08:48Now Deschamps, on the counter-raid for France.
08:54Djorkeyev.
08:57And Terrell called it possession.
08:59And the energy then of Munites.
09:02We're not on the side of goal here, still Munites, then Raoul.
09:07Lost opportunity.
09:08Munites had an opportunity there to shoot,
09:12and he played it back out to Raoul,
09:13and gave the French just that shade of time to recover
09:17after Thuram had made an initial mistake.
09:19Way out of character from Eliane Tourette.
09:22As Dugarri returns to the field.
09:26Patched up and ready to go.
09:29Allé Le Bleu.
09:35The foot was high, surely, then, from Deschamps.
09:45Tako and Abolado have made their way into the penalty box.
09:56Abolado could be useful in these situations.
10:00Guardiola will take the kick.
10:10The foot shot, then, by Vardes.
10:13It was curling in wickedly, then, from Guardiola.
10:16Well, he...
10:18A screaming, subtle free-kick that...
10:20meant for that corner,
10:22and he put it exactly where he wanted to,
10:24and...
10:25Guardiola had to be alive to the danger.
10:30Guardiola's corner now.
10:32Tako had gone near post.
10:35Henri.
10:40Now, can he show his searing pace here?
10:42Well, not with that block from Mendiator.
10:44Kalina waving play on.
10:47It was clear obstruction from Mendiator.
10:52Can France make their possession count here?
10:54Deschamps.
10:55Zidane was almost in.
10:58As Deschamps improvised, here's Henri.
11:02Now, Dugari.
11:04Now, Dugari.
11:06That's a good play.
11:08By Canizares.
11:10Good catch.
11:12Spain, of course, had that disastrous first game when Molina from Atletico was in goal,
11:18and didn't seem that the racers wasn't bright.
11:22And, of course, they've got the excellent goalkeeper, Casillas, in their ranks two from Real Madrid.
11:29One for the future.
11:29There's Joquef.
11:32Then Dugari.
11:35Straight into the midriff of Canizares.
11:42Good shot.
11:43Just picked off Salgado.
11:49Benazares having replaced Molina from that first game.
11:53Molina's lapse in concentration.
11:55Edith Eversen, the Norway's winner.
11:58They've recovered so well since then, Spain.
12:00Here's Raul.
12:01Oh!
12:01Bartes flicking it over the top.
12:04Such vision then from Raul.
12:07He has such an eye for goal.
12:09Delighted by the agility and the athleticism.
12:11Well, Fabio Bartes, but was he onside here just about, wasn't he?
12:15Yeah, Turan played him onside, but what a clever thought.
12:20Bright thinking, magnificent vision, great save in keeping with the start of this game.
12:26It's got a good tempo and it's good.
12:30Guardiola.
12:32Straight at him.
12:34And Carino occurs with that view.
12:40Couldn't avoid it really, that's it, it eats it out.
12:43Guardiola just making it a point that he handled it.
12:46Colina explaining why he didn't give it.
12:49All that body language here.
12:52My money's on Colina.
12:59Google's going for no nonsense, this fellow.
13:18There's Salgado, Helguera.
13:24Spain playing with the confidence they've built over the last few matches.
13:27Since that departure in the opening game against Norway.
13:31Munites.
13:32Good run.
13:35Flash past Turan there.
13:37That's no easy task.
13:41Well, he caught him on the inside.
13:43Turan, of course, are very much a right footer player,
13:45massively strong on the outside, will beat anyone for pace.
13:48But of course, sometimes a full-back can be unbalanced
13:51if you take him on his weaker foot.
13:54Munites has got obvious instructions to try and get on his inside,
13:58particularly when the cover is slow coming across.
14:01Only his 12th cap tonight, Munites.
14:04Two goals for his country, including the one against Yugoslavia.
14:11Laguerre.
14:12Laguerre.
14:12It's a very neat control too by him, but standing firm, so notchalant.
14:18Laguerre going to ground, the play going on.
14:26Blanc.
14:28Christophe Dugarri.
14:37Oh, Zidane!
14:40Well, they'd lost their concentration completely, that's been.
14:44Left him unattended.
14:45And Zidane, of all people, couldn't take advantage.
14:50Bonitas.
14:53Good spot, challenged by Desailly.
14:56Deshawn.
14:57Vieira.
14:59Now Lizarezou.
15:02Stripping forward for France.
15:05Blanc.
15:06Dugarri.
15:06Deshawn.
15:09Zidane.
15:15He certainly favours his right, but he's pretty useful with it.
15:17Here's Vieira, slotted on to Djokaev.
15:22That was a trip by Aratzabal, just took his legs away.
15:28He's in position, this.
15:38Djokaev clearly tumbled to lift the spirit through the French crown.
15:44A clumsy challenge in positions where you really can't risk free-kicks,
15:51particularly when Zidane plays a part.
15:57Most of his goals hit the Serie A, got set-pieces, that's he's at Zidane.
16:08The hero of the World Cup final, of course, with his two-headed goals.
16:16Djokaev is alongside, but it is Zidane!
16:19And it's a fabulous goal!
16:28Canizares left helpless to intervene as it flew past him.
16:33Beautifully placed it by Zidane.
16:36Now Fratz go in front.
16:40Lovely curve, lovely pace.
16:45Canizares, there you see him, he goes all the way, saw it all the way.
16:49The pace of the ball, the dip of the ball, just defeated him.
16:53He wasn't wrong-footed, he was sure-footed.
16:55But the brilliance of Zidane's effort...
17:00..was scored, and Anand Zabawi said you cannot afford to give away free-kicks.
17:07The goal coming off, 32 minutes.
17:13It's been a tight contest, but France at the edge now.
17:17Back to the mercurial talents of Zinedine Zidane.
17:20Zizou, as they call him.
17:22Zizou, are they going forward?
17:26They go!
17:28Bibi divided opinions back home, his wife are an eager Spanish.
17:34But all of France now celebrating another wonderful goal from Zidane.
17:3915th for his country.
17:42That's what it meant for Fabien Váthes, the French goalkeeper.
17:52I was making the point earlier that, at the moment,
17:56Deschamps is looking far better than his water-carrier tag.
18:01And he's always been a bit more than that.
18:05He's been very critical in the last week or so of English football.
18:10He suggests he won't be staying with Chelsea, here's Alphonso de Munites.
18:13How can he get inside of Turan? It's a penalty!
18:22Well, I would have to say my first reaction was he won it cleanly.
18:26Kalina didn't fix it.
18:28He cut across him, and this is where we see he probably just caught him,
18:33Turan, he probably caught his right leg with his left.
18:37It was clumsy, certainly.
18:39It was clumsy, it got in front of him and I think Turan panicked.
18:43But Kalina pointed straight away.
18:46Mendieta, with a penalty kick for Spain.
18:49And the chance to put them level, which she does!
18:53It's 1-1.
18:57Mendieta, who scored from the spot so late in the day against Yugoslavia,
19:02has succeeded again.
19:07And now this game is really set to ignite.
19:12Goal for Spangelo, goal for Spangelo, goal for Spangelo, goal for Spangelo.
19:16Well, Barters went the wrong way, a long run-up, but a nice, steady shot.
19:21The eyes have it.
19:23This man who has played wide for Valencia towards the end of the season
19:28because of the excellent of Gerrard and Farinos, who are going to be in the Spanish squad for the next
19:36few years, I'm sure.
19:38But meanwhile, Mendieta is carrying the Valencia colours.
19:41Here's Raul, Munites to his left, he's been giving Turan a torrid time.
19:50He's so buoyant now, Munites has got behind.
19:56Not too often, David, do you see players get the better of Lillian Turin?
20:00Well, I've got to say, I was saying to you before the game, Peter,
20:02I saw him play the most wonderful game against Real Madrid.
20:05I rang my man in Spain immediately, and he said he's worth looking at,
20:09whether he'd be strong enough, powerful enough for England.
20:11He wasn't sure, he's been around for a while, he's 25.
20:16I was telling Jimmy Arnfield, the wonderful ex-England right-back about him before the game.
20:21A real clever little dribbler, often he plays more central,
20:23a pull-off to centre-forward, but tonight is an orthodox outside left,
20:27he's causing problems.
20:29Dugarri.
20:35He's forced to corner, Salgado.
20:41Very well left, that field to Spain, as they defend this corner.
20:48Desailly has gone up now, and Laurent drop.
20:54Colina has seen some pushing, it's a free-kick for Spain.
21:01They came in for so much criticism in their first game against Norway, but...
21:07Now Vieira.
21:09He's got Henry up with it.
21:10It's still Vieira, and Djokovic...
21:14Good strike!
21:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
21:19CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
21:20It's another brilliant goal for France, Yori Djokovic.
21:24CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
21:27And they are back in front, in style, the Roger LeMers team.
21:35It's a good play.
21:36It's a good play.
21:36It's a good play.
21:38It's a good play.
21:39It's a good play.
21:40Fantastic strike, caught the goalkeeper, a little bit by surprise,
21:43the straight shot entering in at the near post.
21:46But it was the pace and power of the shot that beat Canizares's dive.
21:50It's a good play.
21:51It's a good move by Spain, by France.
21:57Vital time.
22:01Well, he also scored against the Czech Republic, Yori Djokovic.
22:05It's another crucial goal.
22:08Alfonso.
22:10His mediator.
22:13Hustled up fairly by Lizarazu.
22:19He's got a fixture, not an automatic selection these days, Yori Djokovic.
22:25His other line is potential for goal-scoring yet again.
22:38Guardiola, putting it in towards Abelardo.
22:42That is Ori.
22:43Guardiola again.
22:46There goes Mendiator.
22:50Raoul, the French Republic declare.
22:55Deschamps.
23:00Zidane.
23:02Henri's on a run.
23:04Deschamps again advancing too.
23:07Still Zidane loading forward.
23:09Played it for Zidane.
23:10Deschamps.
23:15That's a clever play by Mendiator.
23:20There really is some wonderful ability on this field tonight.
23:24Tremendous technical ability of the players.
23:27Absorbing game.
23:29Absorbing game.
23:29Well worth the boss of air from Brussels tonight, Peter.
23:33Which you have never played.
23:36May be another year, won't they?
23:40Viena.
23:43And Colima blows the half-time whistle.
23:46And what a good first half it has been too.
23:48France leading by two goals to one.
23:50Spain briefly back in it.
23:52But now they still have it all to do in the second half.
23:56It's France two, Spain one.
23:59And we've got a cracking contest here in Bruges.
24:16It's Spain then kicking off.
24:17Now attacking the goal to our right.
24:19Trailing by two goals to one, but don't write them off.
24:36And baby, Peter, I think they'll be feeling a little hard done by,
24:38that they are behind at this stage.
24:40Yes, possession was very equal, a similar amount of shots on goal.
24:44Similar amount of fouls committed.
24:46You couldn't really split them in the first half.
24:48It was the brilliance of Zidane from the free kick,
24:50and then the wonderful finish of Djerkev.
24:53Munites look lively against Turam,
24:55and that's something they've got to look for.
24:59It's Munites, Alfonso!
25:02It goes Raoul.
25:04And somehow Barthes managed to hold on.
25:07There's some fierce pressure there.
25:11There's a great run by the little outside left,
25:13because he got behind Turam.
25:20Jock Eyre now breaking for France.
25:22He's got Zidane alongside, here is Zidane.
25:33Vieira stepping forward, then Zidane again.
25:41Touram, Spain have had time to regroup.
25:44Jock Eyre is going in with Paco, he's come out on top.
25:49They did well there, Paco, good anticipation, getting in front.
25:53Spain have got a drive on from midfield, I just have hope that, for their sakes,
25:57they haven't opened it up too much.
25:59It's a real worry when you lose one of your hard-working midfield players so early in the game.
26:04Because Guardiola and Helguerra haven't really got pace,
26:07they've got excellent feet and excellent brains.
26:11Dugari.
26:14Saigaru, Rana dived in then, Dugari with the cross.
26:19It's Henri arriving, now Lizarazu.
26:22Now the free-kick has gone away at Spain.
26:30Lizarazu may drive on, sometimes the best means of defence is attack.
26:37That's good skill, that, from Helguerra.
26:42Alfonso.
26:44They certainly take more risks than the Camacho,
26:47and under their previous coach Clemente, Spain.
26:51Here's Munites, what a handful he is.
26:55Vieira and Touran between them sorting out the problem,
26:58at the expense of a free-kick,
27:00as they duck him on the deck.
27:02Two, six-foot-three,
27:05tall, black Frenchman,
27:08whacking a tiny little white Spanish guy there in the corner.
27:13Now swatting a fly.
27:19You can see the funny sound again, Munites.
27:33Guardiola, sizing up his options yet again.
27:41Dori Dukaev.
27:50You're quite right, TJ, talking about Clemente there, he had an awful reputation as a defensive-minded coach.
28:01Well, that all changed in the qualifiers.
28:04They lost the opening game to Cyprus.
28:11It's a caution for Guardiola.
28:14I think Deschamps, who was booked a couple of minutes ago.
28:22Well, it was a chop.
28:26Guardiola likes sitting in front of the back four,
28:29he doesn't really like coming out there too much and joining in the play.
28:33And I'm afraid he's going to have to do that.
28:35Now Mendieta's gone off and weakened the middle of the field.
28:42There is Guardiola.
28:44Helguera.
28:46Ventako.
28:47And Munites.
28:53Arantzaba.
28:56He's got a size lurking in the middle.
28:58There's no service to him.
29:01Zidane.
29:09There's Zidane again, looking to open Spain up.
29:15Lizarazu.
29:18Abelado is too firm there for Thierry Henry.
29:26Guardiola.
29:29Arantzaba.
29:30Now, the leaders have gone off on a run.
29:33There's a few-time journey for him.
29:36Guardiola.
29:38Switching the play to find Salgado.
29:42Guardiola again.
29:43The link map for Spain.
29:45It's Raul to Esaiz.
29:50Not the most mobile of front men, but he's very dangerous in the air.
29:56They can't find that route to goal.
29:58Salgado.
29:59Here's Esaiz.
30:02He's been fouled by Desaiz.
30:10They'll probably prepare Esaiz not to come short in the build-up.
30:15Once again.
30:19Outbattered.
30:23Everybody back for the French.
30:27Guardiola.
30:28As usual, she'll bring the responsibility for the free kick.
30:33Bellado might be a target up there.
30:34Certainly Esaiz will be.
30:36The night's on Deptita.
30:39Haven't seen him do that in the past.
30:43Guardiola.
30:46It will be a corner.
30:50This game is by no means secure, by no means safe yet for France.
30:57Spain have recaptured their desire, their hunger.
31:00Half of that first game, a disaster showing against Norway.
31:05A different proposition now.
31:07It's Guardiola's corner.
31:09And well held by Bates.
31:12Releasing Vieira.
31:14Henri.
31:17Salgado was very tight on here.
31:19And will be caution for that.
31:21And will be in big trouble.
31:34Catching Vieira.
31:39Here's Arrazu.
31:41Salgado was tugging at him.
31:43And he's going to be in big trouble.
31:48He's already been cautioned, I think he's going to take a lenient view, though, Kalina.
31:54Clearly pulled him back, Salgado.
32:00Playing with fire there.
32:05I think he's a lucky man still to be on the field, Salgado.
32:10It's just a hint that Kalina started to go for that top pocket.
32:17Realised and...
32:20But they still aren't completely concerned in Spain.
32:23Zidane with the free-king for France,
32:26and it spins away the defection of Salgado.
32:35Zidane with Yori Djokovic.
32:39Great play too.
32:40Zidane again.
32:42An injection of plays by Zidane.
32:45That was Vieira, who came in far post.
32:50Brilliant play then by the French, and by Zidane in particular.
32:54I've rarely seen such a tall, big, well-balanced man who can play with both feet,
33:00playing in the centre of midfield.
33:02He's huddled, perhaps.
33:04An Englishman comes to mind.
33:07Incredible, really.
33:08Got to the left-hand byline there.
33:10He's a right-footed player, and he chips the most super ball up with his left foot.
33:15He's a pearl amongst the many diamonds on this field.
33:21Just as you praised him, he gave it away.
33:24Well, I wanted him to make a mistake somewhere in the game, Peter.
33:28And that's Sebald.
33:38Really stretching France at the moment, Spain.
33:42Maybe Alfonso can here.
33:44Block.
33:47Just managing to nudge it away and find Deshaun.
33:55Salgado to Guardiola.
33:57Then Raul.
33:58Oh, clever.
34:00He's got great skill this far.
34:01He's not a thrifted in and out of the game, but...
34:04He's on top.
34:06There's so much to admire about his game.
34:11And they've got a free kick in a minisc situation now.
34:23Straight into Vieira.
34:30Galina deciding that the Arsenal man was to blame.
34:33So here is Pep Guardiola.
34:42Can't be holding for the corner.
34:48A little bit uncertain at the back end, France.
34:51And the poor Pierre in here.
34:54Guardiola trolling across to take the corner kick.
34:59Tako has gone to the near post.
35:02Asani's lurking behind him with Abelardo.
35:07In goes Abelardo!
35:09They so nearly forced it in.
35:12On Rino, on the break.
35:15Now he can accelerate.
35:17What a run here.
35:17Oh!
35:19Paco sends him flying to the ground.
35:24Such a cynical challenge.
35:30And the usually quiet, undemonstrative Roger Lemaire, the French coach,
35:35dived out of his box there.
35:37He was held back by Dallas.
35:39We saw the challenge.
35:41Premeditated.
35:43And although I don't like the French surrounding the referee and suggesting he should be sent off,
35:49I'm sure Mr Kalina was at his most liberal there in only giving him the yellow card.
35:54Well, it was so cynical from Paco.
35:59Armory's blistering taser taking it clear.
36:02And he would surely have had a run on goal.
36:06Joquev.
36:07To Zidane.
36:09Can the French punish Spain for another area?
36:14Joquev.
36:17Aiming for Dugari.
36:18It was Arant Sabal.
36:21And the foot was just a little high there.
36:23It was very certainly from Lilian Tura.
36:26And he's got his act together in the second half.
36:29After Munites gave him the run around in the first.
36:33Three-headed in for Patrick Vieira.
36:37Alguerra.
36:39Knocked on to Munites.
36:44Three up in support now for Spain, including Alfonso.
36:48Then Guardiola!
36:51Stripped away for the corner.
36:53Guardiola reminds me of one of these old player managers who wants to run everything himself.
36:58Robbie takes every corner, every free-kick.
37:00There he was available for a super-shot that was deflected.
37:04Really involved.
37:05Takes all the corners.
37:07Spain want to bring on Echeverria.
37:10They can't attract the referee's attention.
37:14Abelardo was out-jumped, here's Munites.
37:19Belguerra.
37:23And now a change can be made.
37:26Munites is coming off.
37:29Being replaced by another wingman,
37:34Emilio Echeverria.
37:35He's done well, Pedro Munites.
37:40Lilian Tura will testify to that.
37:42Yup, the box of tricks coming off.
37:49Echeverria, who was the first choice for the opening game.
38:08Alfonso.
38:09But he gave it away carelessly to Zidane.
38:13Vieira.
38:14And then Dugarri.
38:20A challenge by Abelardo has barged him aside.
38:27Dugarri coming off.
38:29And Elka on to replace him.
38:35Dugarri is back in the face early on in the match.
38:38It's certainly twirled away for France.
38:40Dugarri is replaced by Dugarri.
38:45Well appreciated by the French fans here tonight.
38:48His contribution to Christophe Dugarri.
38:56Dugarri.
38:56Dugarri, who seemed to reverse as a first choice at the start of these finals.
39:03But not in from the start tonight.
39:07Dugarri.
39:08I think it's Henri who's gone off.
39:11Not Dugarri.
39:20Well that can happen.
39:22The wrong number can go up by mistake.
39:25Obviously some misunderstanding.
39:26I hope not to Hugh Dallas' embarrassment.
39:30Well the numbers were 12 and 21.
39:31They can't account for it.
39:35This is Jokaev.
39:37And he squeezed in too.
39:48Just got his hat to it, Canizades.
39:54Jokaev with the corner.
39:56Another goal now.
39:57Would surely seal a win for France.
39:59And a place in the semi-finals.
40:05And El Codote starting to make an early impression.
40:11Arant Sabal.
40:15Run by Paco.
40:16To Gerrard.
40:22Esaiz.
40:26Good forward run by Gerrard.
40:28Esaiz.
40:29And Echiberia.
40:33Half-hearted appeals mainly from the fans.
40:36For a penalty.
40:37Molina was having none of it.
40:39Sporting there.
40:41Sporting Echiberia.
40:42With Liza.
40:55And Echiberia.
40:58Brought down by Zidane.
41:03Nasty position.
41:05Van Guardiola burst it.
41:14Twice he's had free kicks from a similar position.
41:17Possibly shade further out where he's gone for a little bendy ball and hoping that someone's going to attack the
41:24ball.
41:28Will it be Raul?
41:29Will it be Guardiola?
41:32Cabaccio can only look on and hope here.
41:35But his team can save this game.
41:38Save this quarter-final.
41:42It is Raul.
41:49But nothing to disturb France.
41:52Here's Batis.
41:54My word he was positive there.
41:56Really good take.
41:57Looked like a red salmon.
42:03My word.
42:05That is confidence for you.
42:08Early take.
42:13He might have paid the price for it.
42:18And a shake off the air.
42:21Gerrard with Guardiola.
42:29Too intricate.
42:30They need to get the ball in the box now.
42:32They've got to throw the coaching manual out the window.
42:36It needs an ugly one or two balls into that penalty box, and it needs to be fought for.
42:42They've got to forget the patience.
42:45They've been wonderfully patient.
42:46They've proved that football is still healthy at this level.
42:51Echeverria.
42:52Asaiz, Abelardo is up there.
42:55Bankers clinging on.
42:58Asaiz has gone down.
43:01And he has given the penalty.
43:06It's drama here, right at the last.
43:09Abelardo.
43:11In there.
43:12Looking for scraps.
43:15Bates had lost possession of the ball.
43:19But Abelardo, it was a very dubious decision against Yugoslavia.
43:24And I would have to say so again there.
43:26Raul is going to take the penalty kick.
43:28Mendieta is not on the field.
43:33The world's highest paid player.
43:37Can he beat Fabian Bates?
43:38Oh!
43:44Would you believe it?
43:46It wasn't even close.
43:49Poor Camacho, poor Raul.
43:53Bartes feeling, I think, that that was a justification there.
43:59You see him immediately went towards the referee.
44:05Still they might do it.
44:09Tremendous cross.
44:11Fine play by Gerrard in the build-up.
44:16He watched himself at the cross here, Asaiz.
44:20But couldn't hit the target.
44:24France escape again.
44:30And you have to feel for Raul.
44:36Back for Spain.
44:42And having said that, David, for me, no way was it a penalty.
44:46Well, it was certainly going away from goal, but of course that's not important.
44:49The laws of the game say that if you get pulled up, it's a foul, it's a penalty.
44:56I think Kalina was close enough.
44:58Bartes did touch his heels.
45:01It's a corner to front.
45:02He lost possession of the ball, he touched his heels.
45:05It's immaterial, there's a sad Spaniard.
45:08A picture of utter dejection, Raul.
45:16So often a hero in the past, for club and country.
45:21He'll feel as if the whole world is weighing on his shoulders right now.
45:29It's kept in.
45:30Inogra on the near post.
45:32That was Turan, who looked to have set him up.
45:35Zidane to Djokov.
45:42There's only an Elko in the box at the moment for France.
45:45Djokov.
45:46It's a wonderful skill by him.
45:48Zidane.
45:50And then Vieira.
45:52It's Dugari.
46:00Free kick, Dugari.
46:02Upended by Ichebelia.
46:07Time is almost up.
46:09Fronts are almost in the semi-finals.
46:19Djokov.
46:22And Elko is in there.
46:24And Zidane.
46:26It's cleared by Guardiola.
46:31Versailles showing his strength.
46:33Abelardo is going up front now.
46:36It's a good ball to Alfonso.
46:41He took it too far.
46:44And it's all over.
46:47Viva La France.
46:49The French dream of becoming the first nation to follow the world title with European success is a step near
46:57reality after a victory, but it was oh so close.
47:03Raul missing a penalty right at the death.
47:06And it's hard for the Spanish players to take it in.
47:12They haven't quite managed to live up to those heavy expectations back home.
47:17Yet again that underachievers tag returns to Hortnum.
47:20And no one will be feeling it more than Raul.
47:23Djokov, score of the second goal for France.
47:26But this was the moment when Raul could have swung the game back his team's way.
47:35Drummer in Bruges, France are through.
47:37Now for Portugal in the semi-finals.
47:39They have beaten Spain by two goals to one.
