New York's West Indian community celebrates roots in colorful parade
New York's West Indian community took to the streets of Brooklyn on Monday (September 7) for a parade to celebrate their culture and roots. Called J'Ouvert, the event brings together Caribbean heritage, music and cuisine in a colorful event from across the region. The parade officially starts from 6am local time, with parade participants getting up before sunrise to get ready for festivities. Among the steel drums, dancing and colorful dress, parade participants remember their heritage at the parade, with many leaving the Caribbean countries like Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba for economic opportunity in the United States.
