A Carwow survey of 1,270 UK drivers found 49% would now consider a Chinese car brand — up from just 24% in early 2023, essentially doubling in three years. Value for money drove the shift (cited by 42%), with brand recognition also surging: Chery awareness jumped from 16% to 50%, and Chinese models now dominate seven of Carwow's eight most-read reviews.
Döküm
00:00Half of all British drivers now say they would consider buying a Chinese car that they'd never
00:04heard of three years ago. The thing is, three years ago, nearly all Brits couldn't even name
00:13a Chinese car brand. Fair enough, there wasn't many of them relevant at that point in time in
00:17the UK. A new study of 1,270 UK drivers found 49% have a Chinese brand on their shortlist
00:27for their next car. Earlier this year, that number was 35%. That's a pretty big jump in a short period
00:33of time. In 2023, the number was 24%. Consideration has more than doubled in three years, and it's
00:42actually accelerating. Brand recognition tells the same story. Be what is now familiar to 71% of
00:49British drivers. JQ sits at 69%, up from 46% a year ago. Emoda jumped from 42% to 57%.
00:58Cherry
00:59went from 16% to 50%. Bizarrely, Cherry is less recognizable in the UK than its brands that
01:08sort of sit underneath it, which are JQ and Emoda. But the share of drivers who couldn't recognize a
01:14single Chinese EV brand, or a single Chinese brand at all, collapsed from 64% in 2023 to only 16
01:23%
01:23today. To be fair, I mean, 16% of British people, if you watch that YouTube channel where they actually
01:29do interviews with people, asking them basic questions, 16% of people in the UK, it just,
01:35they've got no idea what planet they're living on. They don't even know what country they're in,
01:39to be honest. So yeah. Why has this happened? Well, 42% say value for money, 28% point to
01:46competitive
01:47discounts, 19% say Chinese brands simply offer more EV options, which is true. And this year,
01:5370% of Carwell's most read reviews are Chinese models. Everything behind the BMW iX3 in the top
02:01was Chinese, JQ7, Cherry Tigo 8, BWD Seal, Emoda 5. To be fair, those brands do pay Carwell a fair
02:09bit
02:09of money to advertise their products. So that obviously would help. On the Electric Viking
02:13website, I'll put a link in the description below. We have more articles about electric cars and battery
02:19technology than any other website that I'm aware of in the world. So check that out. Link is in the
02:26description. And there you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about everything going on
02:31in the EV world. The sales though back it up. Chinese brands hit 15% of UK registrations in
02:38the first half of 2026. And in April, they overtook the Japanese brands combined, 14.2% versus 13.
02:46BWD passed 100,000 UK sales in three years, a third of those in just six months. And it's now
02:53outselling
02:53Tesla as Britain's number one EV brand. Cherry Group reached 5% share in under two years,
03:00a milestone that took Kia 25 years. Carwell's of Ben Carter says buyers are abandoning badge loyalty
03:08for technology and value. The question isn't whether Chinese brands conquer the UK anymore,
03:16it's actually how fast and which legacy brands don't survive it. All this is fair, but I've got to say,
03:22guys, I do think sometimes value, not always, just want to make it clear, not always, but sometimes
03:29value is not what you think it is. Sometimes people, they do a spreadsheet and they say, well,
03:36this car has this much power. This car has that much power. This car can charge that fast. This car
03:40can charge that fast. And this one will give me this, this, and this. It'll give me a 3D camera,
03:45360 degree camera. It'll give me this. They just spreadsheet it out and then they buy based on that.
03:50And I can tell you now, that's not what you should be doing because that doesn't give you the right
03:54result. Quite often, you'll find things like software bugs will drive you absolutely mental.
04:00So if you're just buying it based on the perception of value because you've done a spreadsheet,
04:05and a lot of people do this, and you say, well, this brand gives me this versus that brand can
04:09be
04:09this. It doesn't always give you the right answer. But what do you guys think? Let me know in the
04:14comments. Thanks for watching. This channel is now officially translated into five languages,
04:20each with its own dedicated YouTube channel, Portuguese, Spanish, German, French, and Hindi.
04:27Full channels. I'm not talking subtitles. If you speak one of those languages, or you know someone who
04:32does, the links are in the description. And subscribing in these first weeks will really help me.
04:38It'll make an enormous difference to how YouTube pushes them out. Because at this point,
04:43yeah, they haven't gotten a lot of traction yet. It takes a while for things to start. But anyway,
04:49we're putting a lot of work into making this, getting this content out there, making this happen.
04:53Why does this matter? Well, because the EV transition is not an English language story.
05:00Brazil is one of the fastest growing EV markets on earth. And BWD is building cars there. Spain and
05:07Latin America are electrifying fast. Germany is the heart of legacy auto industry that's being
05:12disrupted. And there's a lot of people who speak German outside of Germany as well.
05:16And India is arguably the single most important EV market of the next decade.
05:22The audiences in those countries, they deserve their analysis in their own language. At least I think
05:27they do. You can already watch my videos on Bilibili, hundreds of them. I'd rather you watch them
05:32on a channel that I actually control though. And that's actually up now on Bilibili. I'll put a link
05:37in the description to that too.
