00:00Today, we are diving into the terrifying legacy of Catalina de los Rios y Lesperger,
00:07better known across South American folklore simply as La Quintrala.
00:13Born in Santiago around 1604, Catalina was born into immense privilege.
00:19Her family was part of the elite Spanish colonial ruling class,
00:23holding vast encomiendas, sprawling estates worked by indigenous laborers and enslaved people.
00:30Legend and trial records describe her as striking, flame red hair, intense green eyes,
00:36and an utterly cold, unyielding intellect.
00:39But beneath her aristocratic stature was a woman who realized very early in her life
00:44that the Spanish crown was thousands of miles away, local judges could be bought,
00:49and her family's money was a cloak of absolute immunity.
00:54Her streak of violence began early.
00:56At just 18 years old, Catalina was accused of poisoning her own father
01:01with a bowl of prepared chicken soup while he lay sick in bed.
01:04When her family's political connections quietly smothered the charges before a trial could even begin,
01:10Catalina learned the ultimate lesson.
01:12She was above consequence.
01:14Her respects farm to arena and I can actually follow her with her own children.
01:15How if any other women have aids and regardless of theirs aren't affected?
