00:00Let's improve your attention span and learn why a turtle is not just a wet tortoise.
00:03Like yes, they both have shells and are reptiles and vaguely look the same,
00:07so people use the words the same way as if it's fine, but it is not fine.
00:10Firstly, all tortoises are part of the turtle family, but not all turtles are tortoises.
00:15Tortoises live on land.
00:16Turtles usually spend a lot of time in water,
00:18and that one difference basically shapes their entire bodies.
00:21Turtles that swim tend to have flatter shells, because duh, flat is hydrodynamic,
00:25so easier to move in rivers, lakes, oceans, etc. when you're flatter.
00:28And then they just went all the way and evolved webbed feet and flippers as well.
00:31Meanwhile, tortoises do not swim. Like, at all.
00:34So their shells are usually more like this. Tall and domed, and it's actually kind of helpful.
00:38And to carry that heavy shell across the dirt and sand, tortoises have short, chunky legs.
00:43Most turtles are omnivores, because swimming lets them actually catch food.
00:46But tortoises chasing anything would just be embarrassing, so they're mostly herbivores.
00:50There are exceptions, because everything in biology basically has an exception,
00:53but overall, if it lives on land and it looks like a walking rock, it's probably a tortoise.
00:58And if it swims away, that's a turtle.
01:00Also, congrats to you for improving your attention span and learning something.
