00:01:46Um, I don't know, he went on a hike and he was supposed to be back two days ago,
00:01:52uh, about a week or so I think.
00:01:56What is his name?
00:01:58Gary, Gary Hinge.

00:02:0231, no, 32, he's 32.
00:02:06Do you know where he was like me?
00:02:10I, I don't.
00:02:12I'm trying to figure that out right now.
00:02:15Okay, someone's on their way to you to take a report now.
00:02:18I, I don't know.
00:02:23I, I don't know.
00:02:55I first knew something was wrong when I was on the phone with my publisher and Simon kept trying
00:03:01to call in and so once I was off the phone with my publisher I called Simon who's Gary's roommate
00:03:09and he told me that Gary was two days late that's that's not Gary you know Gary
00:03:18would not never leave Tuca that long especially knowing that Simon had to go out of town
00:03:24that's when I knew that there was something wrong and I needed to get there so I packed up
00:03:28and left Panaca and headed straight to Ruth I needed to see what was going on and make sure
00:03:35that my brother was okay and to take care of Tuca until he could get back
00:03:42I really thought he would be back
00:03:45I first met Gary when they were having an event at the Nevada Northern Railway
00:03:52and we both just kind of walked into each other's paths you know started talking about trains
00:04:00and you know we were both looking for a place to stay I was trying to find a place for
00:04:05work he was
00:04:06in between places and we kind of just happened upon this place
00:04:13the first time I heard the name Gary Hinge I believe was when I was working for the radio station
00:04:21NNN it was um I was an investigative reporter it's my first job right out of the gate and my
00:04:27producer
00:04:27came to me and he was like we have to cover this I think it's a good idea for us
00:04:32to do this because
00:04:32the tv stations the news had stopped recording on it and so this was a way for us to get
00:04:38exclusives
00:04:39and to keep the story going because according to everyone else that was hearing about it and
00:04:43recording about it it just gone cold if you want me to describe my brother Gary the best
00:04:50way to describe him is if there was a little old lady that said can you please watch my purse
00:05:00no matter where they were at Gary would sit there and he would watch her purse
00:05:06and make sure that it was safe until she came back that was just the type of person that he
00:05:11was he
00:05:13he was trustworthy and amazing amazing
00:05:21so Gary loved the outdoors I mean he was the king of outdoors let's just say that and I think
00:05:28a lot of
00:05:29people were really envious of him like he lived this beautiful adventurous life that I think you know
00:05:35those who have the nine to five job you know stuck behind a desk I think really really admired that
00:05:43about him super smart uh but definitely private he kind of just kept to himself if he wasn't uh on
00:05:54in
00:05:55his room on his computer then he was working on his model railroad um but other than that yeah
00:06:02just really kept to himself in his room making his videos um super funny though definitely could
00:06:10make you laugh with a couple of his one-liners
00:06:17I started to learn more about who Gary was and I found out that he was an extremely highly intelligent
00:06:24man he's one of those people that was so smart that kind of had a hard time connecting with other
00:06:31people um so he mostly just kind of was more you know solitude and um yeah fascinating I the more
00:06:42I
00:06:42found out about him the more I wanted to keep finding out about who who is Gary
00:07:02Gary had found his dream job being such an you know avid outdoorsman he um started to work for a
00:07:09startup company called map Nevada now what they do is they map out really remote locations for hunters
00:07:17so they track wildlife weather terrain and I mean Gary was in heaven doing this he loved to be by
00:07:29himself out in the wilderness he loved hiking and it'd be an adventurous any train he was drawn to
00:07:43he loved trains
00:07:50hey guys filming another little youtube video at one of my favorite places if I had more time I would
00:07:58become one of the volunteers um but this is the Nevada Northern Railway Museum uh here in Ely and
00:08:06it's kind of an old little copper mine just preserved and left um they do some cool stuff
00:08:12though like you can sleep in this old caboose from Kennycott uh the big copper mine in the area
00:08:19um right outside my home in Ruth um it's kind of a neat little railroad museum they just kind of
00:08:26let
00:08:26you walk around um and you know how much I love trains on top of hiking gotta do something in
00:08:34the
00:08:34window time when you can't be outside as much so I was really excited to take on this story seeing
00:08:40that it was my first story and it also took place in this tiny little town called Ruth and so
00:08:46I grabbed
00:08:47a phone book and I just started calling and I wanted to talk to anybody and everybody that would talk
00:08:51to me
00:08:53I first knew something was off when he asked me to watch his dog Tuca before he went out on
00:09:00one of his trips
00:09:02and he never leaves Tuca he always takes the dog with them so I thought that was kind of weird
00:09:08and he was acting super stressed out even keeping himself even more when he didn't come back after two days
00:09:19I thought that was really strange I had a flight to catch so I just called Beverly to get the
00:09:25dog
00:09:25after I got off the phone with Simon I tried Gary and there was no answer so I hurried and
00:09:33left and I
00:09:33I went to Ruth from Panaca and I uh it's only a couple hours away so when I got there
00:09:41Simon and Tuca
00:09:43were waiting on the front steps Simon really needed to get to the airport in Las Vegas so I asked
00:09:49him
00:09:49where Gary had gone to you know and Simon didn't know his roommate didn't even know he just knew that
00:09:58he was on an expedition to me that wasn't right so I tried Gary a couple of more times and
00:10:03all it did
00:10:04was go to voicemail and something was definitely wrong and so I called the police and waited
00:10:21so I got Beverly's phone number and this is the only time that I ever talked to her and um
00:10:27she was
00:10:29pretty angry with me once I told her that I was a reporter um and she did not want to
00:10:35have anything
00:10:35to do with me or our show which I thought was really unfortunate because you know the news stations
00:10:41they had stopped reporting on this and we were the only ones doing anything and I thought this is
00:10:46a way to help find your brother I don't understand why you don't want to give me the time or
00:10:50day but
00:10:51she didn't and she quickly hung up and that was the only time that I spoke to Beverly
00:10:58Gary became so obsessed with survivalism he would watch the Discovery Channel he would watch YouTube
00:11:06he would study it and find the most remote places no cell service no provisions of any kind other than
00:11:16what he took and it used to scare the heavens out of me I mean I was petrified for him
00:11:25and I would worry
00:11:27so much but after a while it was it was Gary so guys I'm here hiking around and this is
00:11:38one of the
00:11:39cool secrets I have in the wilds in Nevada is this uh cemetery from the late 1800s old mining camp
00:11:49but I
00:11:49won't disclose the name um for safety reasons don't want anyone getting lost out here but you can see
00:11:57all these old graves wood stones unmarked graves and no names now um give you an idea of where I
00:12:07had
00:12:07to hike from is that mountain way over there is my trucks on the other side of it so hiked
00:12:16over that
00:12:17mountain and I'm way out this way now hiking around I wouldn't say what Gary was doing was hiking uh
00:12:28these
00:12:28were multiple day uh like survival excursions in the beginning what gave me hope was the fact that
00:12:39when Gary was much younger much much younger like second grade we all went camping and Gary disappeared
00:12:50from the campsite and we searched for him and searched for him and we were all so worried mom and
00:12:57dad
00:12:58were just terrified I was terrified we didn't want to leave the mountain to go and get cell service or
00:13:04anything
00:13:04we just went looking for him and we looked for him all night and the next morning we came up
00:13:14to a
00:13:15sheep herders camp thinking you know we're gonna tell him look keep an eye out for the second grader
00:13:20the second grader um that was missing and we walk up and there is my little brother Gary
00:13:31playing with the animals he'd known that if he got to the sheep herders camp he would be okay that
00:13:37mom
00:13:38and dad would come and look for him and he was so resilient I it was in him it second
00:13:45nature
00:13:47so after speaking to a bunch of people in Ruth I started to learn a little bit more about Beverly
00:13:52and Beverly's relationship with Gary in the past um so she had a lot of anger towards Gary um
00:14:02she really blamed him for their parents death and then when their parents did pass away you know she
00:14:09was stuck still raising Gary and so she held quite a lot of resentment against him
00:14:17well I was mad at Gary when mom and dad died um they were out on a fishing trip and
00:14:24mom and dad liked
00:14:25to do some night fishing and so they went out and they'd hung the lantern where they could see it
00:14:33so
00:14:33they could get back to shore safely back to camp without hitting any rocks well Gary decided that he was
00:14:40going to go hunting frogs and everything and so and he went exploring and while he's out there he he
00:14:47hung
00:14:47the lantern up so that he could see what he was doing meanwhile mom and dad decided that they were
00:14:53going
00:14:53to come back in and call it a night so they headed for the lantern not knowing that Gary had
00:15:01moved it
00:15:03while he was exploring while he was exploring and so they followed the light and
00:15:11it was the wrong spot they didn't make it back because they hit the rocks you know and
00:15:19and had Gary not hung the lantern up where he was at and left it where it needed to be
00:15:27there wouldn't have been any problems
00:15:32i just felt super bad for beverly
00:15:41you know i could just hear her inside Gary's room sobbing
00:15:50you know you're really making me miss my brother Gary
00:16:11i kept hearing people refer to Gary as a hiker and in my opinion i don't really think that's correct
00:16:18because to me Gary's more of a survivalist you know he would he would go out into the wilderness for
00:16:24you
00:16:25a week or two on end with just a backpack he you know he's kind of like the macgyver of
00:16:31the wilderness
00:16:32you know just to survive and and and and live off of the land and you know filter his own
00:16:39water so
00:16:40to hear him just be like oh he's just a hiker gone missing it's he's not when Gary and i
00:16:46first started
00:16:46living together i actually went out with him on one of these things and i just kept telling myself
00:16:52the entire time never again uh Gary wouldn't let us bring enough food or water and i was it was
00:17:00the
00:17:00most miserable experience the one thing i did like about it was we kept on finding these
00:17:081800s abandoned mining kind of structures which was super cool
00:17:14this wasn't a normal search and rescue because you know Gary didn't tell anybody where he was going
00:17:23on his excursion you know and he would go really deep into the wilderness and he'd be gone for a
00:17:30week
00:17:30or so so no one had any idea where to even start looking and so police decided um the best
00:17:39way or the
00:17:40only thing they could think of was to maybe check his cell phone and uh his cell phone pings and
00:17:46watch
00:17:47tower and it looked to be as he had turned his cell phone off shortly after leaving his home when
00:17:55Beverly showed up to get the dog um yeah i i regret that now i kind of i kind of
00:18:01lashed out at her
00:18:04i was so put off when i got to town and he was so antsy to get out of there
00:18:10and you know
00:18:13being my brother's roommate not even asking where he was going to be or you know if there was going
00:18:19to you know any issue that might set up a red flag if he didn't come home you know he
00:18:25had his dog and
00:18:26everything and he knew he needed to be out of town i just didn't i didn't feel right about it
00:18:34it just
00:18:35didn't feel right and you know a week or so before that Gary had confided in me that him and
00:18:40Simon
00:18:40weren't getting along very well and so he wanted to move out and so i just it just didn't feel
00:18:51right
00:18:51so i let the cops know you know i i just don't trust him there's just something to not be
00:18:59concerned at all
00:19:00where your roommate's going to be and you know more worried about getting on a plane than somebody
00:19:08missing that's supposed to be your friend close to you no we never talked about that he never told
00:19:17me where he went hiking ever he never mentioned it and even if we did talk about it i'm pretty
00:19:23sure he probably wouldn't have told me so but at the beginning i understood you know she needs someone
00:19:30to point the finger at and she was super upset understandably but after some time you know it
00:19:38just kind of got old so i called her and i you know told her that there's no way i
00:19:44would have known
00:19:45and just by the way you're his sister so why didn't you know when i first reported Gary missing
00:19:53the the police were wonderful they they were really on top of it they did an apb be on the
00:20:00lookout for
00:20:01his truck himself park rangers fishing game everything um you know we live in a small town people don't go
00:20:10missing all the time and so this was a big deal and they really took it seriously they look you
00:20:17know they
00:20:17had it everywhere um i was embarrassed that i didn't know exactly where he was at you know i'm his
00:20:25sister
00:20:27i should have known
00:20:32i should have known
00:20:57my first thought when i heard he was missing was
00:21:05oh it'd be near impossible to find him
00:21:10either he finally just injured himself or maybe he had eaten something um that he didn't know was
00:21:21going to make him so sick
00:21:26it'd been two days since i'd reported him missing and i hadn't slept more than
00:21:3110 to 15 minutes at a time
00:21:34i had people calling and were so concerned and wanted to know where to start looking for him
00:21:41but not knowing where he was at where would i have them look
00:21:47and then the phone call came they'd found gary's truck
00:22:22and i've had such a sinking feeling such a sick to my stomach feeling that this was now very real
00:22:39after the cops called and let me know that they'd found his truck they came and picked me up
00:22:45and took me to it it was about 55 miles out of town and we got there and seeing his
00:22:53truck
00:22:53and i was like i was so hopeful you know thinking he probably fell maybe broke an ankle stuck in
00:23:03a ravine
00:23:04can't get himself out but i had hope you know i i really had hope that we were gonna find
00:23:11him okay
00:23:13it just wasn't in a place where gary would have left it
00:23:16you know like it wasn't in a spot where he wanted he would want to go to explore
00:23:23while i was sitting there watching him process gary's truck i was looking around
00:23:31just wasn't gary he loved to explore vast forests rocky hills
00:24:07i'm a private investigator
00:24:11i was hired by beverly shortly after gary's truck was found
00:24:17the high desert as you can see
00:24:23it's very majestic it's very majestic has mountains valleys plains forests it has it all
00:24:33but it's also quite dangerous and very unforgiving so after gary's truck was found
00:24:39um a search began and people really rallied
00:24:48gary went missing in the hottest part of the summer and what we see most of the time in disappearance
00:24:55like
00:24:55is it's people suffering from heat stroke dehydration sometimes even injury
00:25:06people started showing up and then more people started showing up and next thing i know it's a whole
00:25:12whirlwind i there were people there that i didn't know that i didn't that gary didn't know i there were
00:25:22people bringing drones all kinds of search and rescue it was the most humbling experience to know that these
00:25:31strangers were out there helping to try to find my brother and bring him home
00:25:51so once gary's truck was found beverly was
00:25:56let's just say she was very vocal about um how the truck seemed to be parked in a suspicious location
00:26:04like she was just convinced that her brother had not parked it there her brother wouldn't park it there
00:26:09and she would not stop talking about it um so the cops eventually looked into this
00:26:17the clock was ticking they very much needed to find gary as soon as possible beverly on the other hand
00:26:25was very much in their way she was in the way and she was really messing things up
00:26:33so searching the high desert isn't easy i mean it's not an easy task people think it is people
00:26:38think you can just get up in the air in a helicopter and fly around and and look at the
00:26:43ground and
00:26:44you know see someone but once you're on the ground there's abandoned mines there's bushes and tree cover
00:26:53and it's super difficult so finding someone is it's not easy as people think it is
00:27:01oh my god sheep hi sheep look at all the sheep sheep are a lot nicer than people
00:27:12hey little sheeps look at all you guys
00:27:19roaming the land doing what you need to do
00:27:28jeez they all ran away from me can't even make friends with sheep
00:27:35the officers didn't want me to participate in the search um
00:27:42they thought it was best that i stay home at gary's place in case he
00:27:48tried to contact me call or show up i was very much familiar with the lead investigator
00:27:56we had worked together before and we were definitely familiar with each other
00:28:01i called him to kind of check up on things and see where the investigation was headed and if they
00:28:08had
00:28:08any new information he told me that they had made a discovery in the truck
00:28:23but since i was not formally hired by beverly i had to contact her first before they would discuss the
00:28:31matter with me
00:28:34i was hopeful that they had good news
00:28:39that the officer asked me
00:28:43if gary had any enemies or if i knew anybody that may want to hurt him
00:28:52i asked the officer why why would he why would he ask that and
00:29:01in confidence they told me that uh
00:29:06they had evidence that gary did not drive his truck out there
00:29:26so i waited a couple of hours and went over to gary's house where beverly was staying
00:29:31and she was absolutely hysterical she told me that the police had informed her that
00:29:38in gary's truck they had discovered prints on top of gary's all over on top of the steering wheel
00:29:47the dashboard the dashboard the gear and what was most surprising or alarming was that
00:29:56they discovered footprints bare footprints and they were scarred and unidentifiable which even added more to the mystery
00:30:17the footprint was there there was they they said he said that they it was barefoot
00:30:34so someone drove gary's truck
00:30:40barefoot and it just doesn't sit well with me because it's like
00:30:45what happened why was this person not wearing shoes what what was going on like it's just
00:30:52it's just odd and it's very i don't know it it's just you know it made my skin crawl
00:31:03oh look at the little baby dude that's kind of cool to see you don't see that too often
00:31:28you
00:31:42you know I've had been sleeping and everything and my mind was just really you know I had a lot
00:31:51of things going through my head different scenarios maybe he picked up a friend maybe
00:31:59somebody stole his truck while he was out hiking or maybe he picked up a hitchhiker and
00:32:07the hitchhiker had done something to him
00:32:15I don't know at this point so many things were just going through my head
00:32:19just over and over again which didn't help me try to get any sleep
00:32:39so Beverly still wanted me to vet out Simon because she still thought he was very suspicious
00:32:47and I did too I looked into him again and lo and behold he was ruled out as a suspect
00:32:55but through that process I actually learned that Gary had been talking to someone that he met on
00:33:02a Facebook messenger group they had been corresponding with each other through a local
00:33:08sellers group and I guess they had been commenting on each other's posts and one thing led to another
00:33:14and they became more than friends when I confronted this person he was very much terrified didn't want
00:33:25to talk to me didn't want to have anything to do with me or the investigation and I told him
00:33:28you don't talk to me you're going to have to talk to the cops and they're going to really bust
00:33:32your ass
00:33:33and I think he was terrified of being outed in this community because it's such a small town
00:33:41not a lot of gay people and so he did talk to me he told me that he didn't have
00:33:47anything to do
00:33:48with Gary's disappearance he was sad and upset that Gary had disappeared he didn't know what happened
00:33:55to him I guess I did believe him he really didn't want to discuss it but ultimately when I did
00:34:03check
00:34:03out his alibi he was cleared as a suspect
00:34:12hey guys now that I'm done chasing sheep around like a crazy person in the mountains
00:34:18I've seen a lot out here mining camps mines abandoned towns buildings remnants of the past
00:34:26but the coolest and my favorite personally is all the Native American remnants I love finding arrowheads
00:34:33and seeing petrol cliffs on mountainsides just old writing from the Native people who lived here long
00:34:40before any settlers moved in to me that's the coolest stuff to see but it's getting dark now the
00:34:46sun setting I think I'm gonna call it a night and get settled in in my camp
00:34:53they were still processing the crime scene and everything and they came across an envelope in
00:35:00the center console it had his rent money in it to me that said that whoever he was with wasn't
00:35:12there to
00:35:13take his money or anything that he might have had
00:35:35I walked to the police officers knocking on my door
00:35:43and they were informing me that they called off the search and why they're explaining things to me
00:35:51I'm seeing them talking I'm not I'm not comprehending anything I it everything was just kind of flashing and
00:36:03and you know I'm seeing their faces and I'm seeing their lips move
00:36:07and then they're looking at me like I'm crazy and next thing I know I'm I'm on a stretcher
00:36:22and
00:36:25taken to the ER where they had to give me hydration and IV with fluids and
00:36:32medicine that
00:36:34helped me sleep and
00:36:37for the first time since all of this started
00:36:41I got 10 hours of sleep
00:36:44this was the largest search and rescue
00:36:46um that Nevada had ever seen and um when
00:36:50they finally called it off
00:36:53everyone was just so shocked
00:36:55but
00:36:56you mean you can't search the entire state
00:36:58of Nevada it's just too vast it's too broad
00:37:01and it had been so long that
00:37:03the chances of finding him
00:37:06and finding him alive were
00:37:09slim to none
00:37:10the investigation was dead in the water
00:37:13we didn't have any leads
00:37:14the fingerprints in the truck didn't match any database
00:37:18so we didn't know what to do
00:37:20but then
00:37:28Gary's followers started calling
00:37:35and this whole thing
00:37:36was turned on its head
00:37:40so I'm at my desk
00:37:41and I'm going through
00:37:42the show notes
00:37:44I'm getting ready to go on air
00:37:45and my producer comes through my door
00:37:46and he's like
00:37:47you have a phone call
00:37:48you have to take this phone call
00:37:50and
00:37:51I get on the phone
00:37:52and it's one of our listeners
00:37:54and
00:37:55he's telling me that I have to look
00:37:57into Gary's blog
00:37:58he's going on and on about
00:38:00this crazy story about Gary
00:38:03and
00:38:05he's telling me that
00:38:06he thinks he knows where he is
00:38:07he thinks he knows what happened
00:38:09what happened to him
00:38:10and that I have to
00:38:12I have to go
00:38:13and look at this blog right now
00:38:16my friend Monica calls me
00:38:18and tells me that
00:38:20it's all over the news
00:38:21that
00:38:23all these people are calling into the radio station
00:38:25and she tells me that they're talking about Gary's blog
00:38:30and the fact that it needs to be read
00:38:33and that there's comments and everything
00:38:35and so
00:38:38once I got discharged
00:38:39I went straight to Gary's house
00:38:41so I could read the blog
00:38:42and see what
00:38:43what all this was
00:38:45that they were talking about
00:38:47unfortunately Beverly found out about Gary's blog
00:38:49hours before we did
00:38:50and she went right over there
00:38:52and really messed things up
00:38:54hey guys
00:38:55it's me again
00:38:56a lot of people have been following the blog
00:38:59and new to the blog
00:39:00and been saying
00:39:01I'm just trying to copy
00:39:02naked and afraid
00:39:03and as you can tell
