Julian Reid enters a sham marriage with another woman to secure a cure for his mute wife, Clara Runder. He ultimately betrays Clara, leaving her to perish in a fire. Clara, however, is rescued, miraculously regains her voice, and rebuilds her life. When Julian discovers her anew, his obsession only inflicts further pain. The devastating revelation that Clara lost her voice while saving him finally drives him mad. In the end, Clara moves on, while Julian is left with nothing.
