The Netherlands has moved about 86 tonnes of gold from North America to London, shifting roughly a quarter of the reserves previously stored in New York and Ottawa. De Nederlandsche Bank says the move is aimed at strengthening crisis preparedness and making its reserves easier to deploy. The Netherlands is not selling its gold; it is changing where the metal is held. Around 59 tonnes were repositioned through paper transactions, while more than 27 tonnes were physically transferred. The move comes as geopolitical tensions prompt central banks to reassess reserve security, storage locations and access to gold during potential crises.

00:05A major shift is underway in Europe's gold reserves.
00:09The Netherlands has moved a significant portion of its gold holdings from North America to
00:15London in a move the Dutch Central Bank says is designed to strengthen crisis preparedness
00:21and make its reserves easier to deploy.
00:24Between March and August 2026, Danita Landske Bank transferred approximately 86 tons of gold.
00:33That represents roughly a quarter of the gold it had previously stored in New York and Ottawa.
00:39The move does not mean the Netherlands is selling off its gold reserves.
00:44Instead, the Dutch Central Bank is changing where that gold is held, with London emerging
00:50as the biggest single-storage location.
00:53And the timing is drawing attention as geopolitical tensions continue to reshape how central banks
01:00think about financial security.
01:03The details of the operation are striking.
01:05Of the approximately 86 tons moved, around 59 tons were handled through paper transactions.
01:13The gold was sold in New York, while an equivalent quantity meeting modern international standards
01:19was purchased in London.
01:2127 tons, meanwhile, were physically transferred from vaults in New York and Ottawa to the Dutch
01:28Central Bank's cash center in Zeist.
01:31Matching quantities of compliant gold bars were then transferred from Zeist to London.
01:36That approach allowed the Netherlands to reposition its reserves without having to remelt the existing bars.
01:43At the end of 2025, the Netherlands held approximately 612.4 tons of gold, valued at around 72.2 billion
01:55euros.
01:56That total remains unchanged.
01:59What has changed is where the gold is stored.
02:02London's share has jumped from 18.1% to 32.1%, making the United Kingdom the largest single location for
02:12Dutch gold reserves.
02:13Domestic holdings in Zeist remain at roughly 30.8%.
02:18Meanwhile, the shares stored in New York and Ottawa have each fallen to approximately 18.5%.
02:27The Dutch Central Bank says this redistribution is about resilience.
02:32The objective is to maintain reserves across multiple locations, while ensuring that a larger portion is stored where it can
02:40be traded quickly if circumstances suddenly deteriorate.
02:43D&B President Olaf Slapin says the decision is ultimately about liquidity.
02:50Gold stored at the Bank of England meets international market standards and can be readily traded in global markets.
02:57And that message is becoming increasingly important as governments confront a world of wars, sanctions, trade tensions, and unpredictable geopolitical
03:07risks.
03:08The Netherlands is not abandoning gold, it is making sure its gold can be accessed when it matters most.
03:15The move also comes amid a wider reassessment by central banks around the world.
03:21France has taken a similar approach.
03:23The country recently completed the repatriation or replacement of 129 tons of gold previously held in New York.
03:32Rather than simply transporting every bar back to France, the gold stored in New York was sold and equivalent modern
03:40standard gold was acquired for storage in Paris.
03:43The pattern is becoming increasingly clear.
03:47Central banks are paying greater attention to where their reserves are stored, how quickly those reserves can be accessed,
03:53and how vulnerable individual storage locations may be during a geopolitical crisis.
04:00And that is where the broader geopolitical picture becomes important.
04:04The Netherlands decision comes at a time when relations between major powers are increasingly shaped by sanctions, economic pressure, and
04:13strategic competition.
04:15Gold has no issuer.
04:17However, it does not depend on the creditworthiness of a government or corporation.
04:21And, in periods of severe uncertainty, physical gold can serve as a critical reserve asset.
04:28For the Netherlands, spreading its holdings between the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and North America reduces concentration risks.
04:36At the same time, moving more reserves into London gives the central bank access to one of the world's deepest
04:43gold trading markets.
04:44The message from Amsterdam is clear.
04:47The Netherlands is not dumping gold.
04:50Its total reserves remain unchanged.
04:53Instead, the country is repositioning one of its most important financial assets for a world that has become considerably more
05:00uncertain.
05:01London now holds the largest share of Dutch gold.
05:05North American holdings have been reduced.
05:08And domestic reserves remain a major part of the overall portfolio.
05:12The Dutch central bank calls the strategy prudent risk management, not a prediction of an imminent crisis.
