00:04The internet has come a long way from 56k and dial-up connections, but it may have just gotten the
00:09super charge many have been waiting for.
00:11Science Alert reports the average speed of your home broadband internet connection usually sits around 167 megabits per second.
00:18The new speed record that was recently set hit an incredible top speed of 1.8 petabits per second.
00:24That's more than 10 million times faster than your average internet speed.
00:27So how did they do it? Well, using lasers.
00:30They built a custom optical chip called a frequency comb.
00:33The chip sends a signal in the form of a single laser, which separates into hundreds of frequencies at set
00:37distances like the teeth in a comb, hence the name.
00:40Each frequency carries its own set of data, meaning one line of transmission separates into hundreds, providing the massive data
00:46stream.
00:47They say it's still a proof of concept, but that this technology might not only improve internet speeds the world
00:51over,
00:52but it could also lower the climate impact of the internet, replacing hundreds of thousands of heat generating energy consuming
00:58transmissions.
