00:03On 27 August, protestors in Ceuta attempted to block Red Cross vehicles delivering food to migrants, amid growing hostility towards
00:13the organisation.
00:15Amid the protests, the humanitarian organisation has been the target of false and misleading claims that have circulated online.
00:22One video shared more than 13,000 times supposedly showed men being transferred from Ceuta to mainland Spain, but it's
00:32false.
00:32The footage was recorded on El Trampolin Beach in Ceuta and shows the Red Cross distributing food to around 2
00:39,000 migrants.
00:41We can tell that by looking at this footage, which was published several days earlier by Spanish news agency Europa
00:47Press,
00:47and shows a different angle of the Red Cross and other charity organisations distributing food to migrants on 3 August.
00:55Other posts accuse the Red Cross of assisting migrants while abandoning Spanish citizens affected by wildfires.
01:02Such as this post here, which says that the charity failed to help Spanish people impacted by the blazes.
01:08And this one, which says the same thing about the wildfires and the 2024 flooding in Valencia.
01:14However, records from the organisation show it did provide assistance in the aftermath of both disasters.
01:20It says that by the 24th of August, it mobilised more than 938 staff and volunteers this summer as fires
01:28ravaged the Iberian Peninsula,
01:30provided assistance nearly 6,900 times and gave temporary accommodation to more than 5,600 people.
01:38Its efforts also began immediately in the aftermath of the catastrophic flooding in 2024.
01:44By the first anniversary of the disaster, it reported having assisted more than 143,000 people through emergency relief and
01:53longer-term recovery programmes.
