00:35– Conference of Parties, or COP17 Conference of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification,
00:41held in Mongolia
00:43was another in the series of attempts to reverse the process of land degradation
00:47sydd goledden 40 mlynedd yn dechrau bwy 음yfod 40 mlynedd yn dechrau
00:52...
00:52...
00:52The theme was recovery of rangelands,
00:54which support 2 billion people, including 500 million herders or pastoralists.
01:00The host country, Mongolia and the United Nations,
01:02have appealed to 197 delegations gathered here in Ulaanbaatar
01:06to use more than 400 scheduled events
01:09to find really tangible solutions for land degradation
01:11because recent wildfires and heatwaves around the world
01:15show us that the climate change is accelerating.
01:18COP17 set sights on action plans for land restoration
01:21and finding funds to support them,
01:23but also raising awareness that many acute problems like migrations
01:27are actually the result of land degradation.
01:30Once land is degraded, you will not be able to plant
01:34and you will have both food and water security,
01:36but you will have also migration and displacement.
01:39So here the people are not given the choice
01:42whether they're moving from their land, yes or no,
01:44but they don't have what to sustain their livelihood
01:47and what to make it resilient.
01:48The convention estimates that inaction on land costs the world
01:52almost 900 billion dollars a year,
01:55while investment in healthy land could generate up to 1.8 trillion
01:59through food production, water provision and carbon storing.
02:02Yet, the investment so far remains modest.
02:05And if you look at how much money goes into artificial intelligence,
02:10for that matter, it is the same amount that goes into climate financing,
02:14$2 trillion a year.
02:16But when you double click on climate financing,
02:18less than 3% goes to land and water.
02:22It is way under invested.
02:23And here this white paper actually puts forward the reasons
02:27why businesses can actually invest into soil and water,
02:31but you bring returns.
02:32Every dollar invested into soil will give you at least $4 to $30 in exchange.
02:37The Ministerial Dialogue on Innovative Financial Mechanisms
02:41brought together some of the large financial institutions
02:44such as the World Bank Group, Development Banks of Asia, Africa,
02:48the Islamic World, European Investment Bank, GEF and the Climate Fund.
02:52They announced $1.3 billion of financing for land restoration
02:56and drought resilience across 23 countries on five continents.
03:01Several countries, including host Mongolia,
03:03announced new platforms for attracting private investment into land.
03:071.3 billion plantation initiative has been done by Mongolian president
03:13and it is really successfully going on.
03:16Offering all these corporate companies that you can invest
03:21just like 1% of your taxable income for this rangelands
03:25or the green transition, you know, for the countries.
03:29And you can decide and you can implement the project by yourself,
03:32not involved from the government.
03:36Even if COPs, including this one,
03:37fall short of reaching a legally binding global plans,
03:40they are considered to be successful
03:42as they bring countries to present national agendas and make pledges.
03:46In Riyadh, we have 35 initiatives in the Riyadh Action Agenda.
03:50And we continued after that in 2025, in 2026.
03:54And we came here to Mongolia.
03:56And now we have 200, or to be exact, 198 initiatives
04:02under Riyadh Action Agenda.
04:04During 12 days in Ulaanbaatar, alliances were forged,
04:08like the one between China and the League of Arab States,
04:11who made a joint five-year plan of cooperation to restore land.
04:14countries' shared experience in fighting desertification.
04:18First of all, we consider countries with different landscapes.
04:22First of all, Mongolia, this is China,
04:24and they have a great experience of fighting with the mountains.
04:28At the same time, our experience of greening the aral
04:31is very much interested in our partners,
04:35and many countries are coming to our pavilion
04:37and are asking about our experience.
04:39In the green zone of COP17, open to the general public,
04:42policy met real life.
04:44The people could come, meet experts, scientists, scholars,
04:47city planners, even school projects,
04:50and learn how desertification influences their lives.
04:53Also, get a glimpse of Mongolian rich culture and tradition.
