🦈🌊 The terror of JAWS begins in the water!

The opening attack in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic Jaws immediately establishes that something deadly is lurking beneath the waters surrounding Amity Island.

The victim is Chrissie Watkins, a young woman who leaves a beach gathering and goes swimming at night. What begins as a peaceful swim suddenly becomes one of the most memorable opening sequences in movie history.

What makes the scene especially frightening is how little the audience initially sees. Instead of immediately revealing the shark, the sequence relies heavily on camera perspective, movement, suspense, the darkness of the ocean, and John Williams’ unforgettable musical theme.

🦈 Jaws became a landmark movie and a massive box-office success, helping establish the modern summer-blockbuster phenomenon. Steven Spielberg’s decision to keep the shark largely unseen during portions of the film ultimately helped make the suspense even stronger.

🌊 Would YOU have gone swimming in that water at night?

00:00draws, the first shark attack. We all remember the story of the poor girl who was dragged back
00:04and forth in the water by the shark for the first time, the shark's first victim. It was Spielberg's
00:09idea to use underwater cables in order to make the violent action appear real, and the actor
00:14Susan Baclany was literally dragged turbulently through the water by the cables. Moreover, the
00:19actor wasn't warned when the jerking would begin. So the surprise is genuine. Baclany was placed in
00:24front of a microphone with her head turned up to the ceiling and water poured down her throat from
00:28above to add the sound of drowning.
