00:04Protecting marine species and the environment during military readiness activities in the
00:08Pacific Northwest and Alaska are important goals for our United States Navy and Coast Guard.
00:14We are required to undertake measures to avoid, reduce, or minimize potential impacts military
00:20readiness activities can have on local marine habitats and wildlife. To that end, the Navy
00:26and Coast Guard implement mitigation measures such as using lookouts to monitor for marine
00:31species before and during military readiness activities, reducing or stopping sonar use
00:37if animals are sighted within certain distances, and restricting activities in certain areas or
00:43times of the year. The Navy and Coast Guard recognize the importance of protecting the
00:48endangered southern resident killer whale, as well as other species, and have established
00:52geographic mitigation areas during activities for the benefit of the species. The Navy and
00:58Coast Guard use the Protective Measures Assessment Protocol, or PMAP, a web-based mapping tool to
01:04employ the right measures in the right locations and seasons, as identified in regulatory documents.
01:11The Navy issues awareness messages when southern resident killer whales are expected to be in the area,
01:16reminding military ships and aircraft to be vigilant and watch for them. For certain offshore activities,
01:24the Navy will cancel or relocate them if southern resident killer whales are sighted near the planned location.
01:30The Navy and Coast Guard are committed to protecting the marine environment and actively strive to
01:36minimize potential effects on marine species and the marine environment.
01:47the shoreine land, the Navy and Coast Guard are regulated violence centers.
