03:22The big story that we've been breaking this evening, Air Marshal Jitendra Mishra is the new
03:27Ram Mandir or the first Ram Mandir CEO after the controversy over the Chanda Chori that rocked
03:34the Ram Mandir Trust. Operation Sindhu's hero gets the top post at the Ram Mandir. Mishra was
03:42chief of IAF Western Command. He has said in an interview and spoken to us on the phone as well,
03:47consider this the blessings of Lord Ram. According to the trust, the CEO will have the responsibility
03:53to develop systems, procedures, operational practices appropriate to the nature and scale
03:59of the organization. Listen in to what he said soon after he took over.
04:06The Lord Ram Mandirians killed in the Soviet Union.
04:11I have the privilege of my request for a very strong honor to move throughout thewohl.
04:15I would love to have a privilege of those and share it to me in the future.
04:24As the Raat的时候 I have granted me, look, I am the blessing of Shri Ram.
04:28Bharat at the Bhaerati Vaayiu Sena was given an offer to me like HR.
04:33The person I than to pursue his request for the same or a important purpose for him to speak to
04:34me as a
04:45Thank you very much.
05:09And joining me now is our Lakhnav correspondent Samar Srivastav is joining us on that big story.
05:16Samar, this has been a rough period for the Ram Janmobhumi Trust.
05:22They have to restore public trust, public faith in the Ram Mandir's functioning.
05:29Give us a sense of where this leaves the old guard.
05:31The entire previous lot, the likes of Champat Rai and others, are they now completely out?
05:37Are we going to see a completely new team now at the Ram Mandir Trust?
05:45Well, exactly Rajdeep, we are seeing a new team completely because the position which used to be with Champat Rai
05:52has now been shifted to Govind Devgiri who was the treasurer.
05:55Though Krishna Mohan was there for some temporary period, but now it has officially been announced that the Champat Rai
06:02has also obviously been replaced by Govind Devgiri.
06:05So Govind Devgiri is the new general secretary of the Ram Temple Trust.
06:09While Ram Temple Trust for the first time has got the new CEO, the first CEO, I must say, that
06:14he is the retired air marshal.
06:17So these are the major developments that happened today at the trust meeting.
06:21But as you just said that the temple has seen some rough period since past few months also, with opposition
06:27taking on the ruling BJP and all the politics around it.
06:31So it was a time when they wanted somebody who can rebuild that trust at least towards the public, towards
06:39the devotees of Lord Ram who come to Ayodhya from South, from Madhya Pradesh, from Rajasthan.
06:44So that was one scene because he has been an honest guy who was in the operation Safed Sagar, who
06:51was in operation Sindhu.
06:53And by making him the CEO, the image is neat and clean and that can bring back that lost trust
07:01and belief via this particular CEO.
07:04And that's the thinking of the trust.
07:05And that's why out of more than 5,000 people who in a way tried to become the CEO, this
07:12air marshal has become the CEO finally.
07:16Back to you.
07:17Okay.
07:18Samar Srivastava telling us that this is an attempt by the Ram Janmabhumi Trust to restore public faith credibility.
07:25We'll wait and see whether the military man can do what clearly those associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishat were
07:32simply unable to do.
07:35Okay, let me turn from there to one of my top focuses today.
07:39Six years ago, Sushant Singh Rajput's case had rocked the country.
07:45An actor who was found eventually seen to be a death by suicide.
07:50But there was another case of Sushant's celebrity manager, Disha Salian, who also reportedly committed suicide just before Sushant's death.
08:01At the time, the Mumbai police claimed it was a case of suicide.
08:06Her father, though, insisted that this was a cover-up and there was a rape and his daughter had been
08:13murdered.
08:14Today, seven years later or six years later, the case has taken a fresh turn.
08:19The Mumbai High Court ordered a CBI probe today, claiming that there were suspicious circumstances and gaps in the earlier
08:27investigation that led them to believe that a fresh investigation is called for.
08:35At the time, the BJP had claimed that the Uddhav Thakre government was involved in a cover-up.
08:42Today's order, therefore, predictably has triggered fresh reactions from her family and political parties.
08:49What really happened to Disha Salian?
08:52Take a look.
09:07Six years after Sushant Singh Rajput's manager, Disha Salian's mysterious death, there is a fresh twist.
09:16The Mumbai High Court has ordered a CBI probe after flagging what it calls certain suspicious circumstances in the investigation.
09:25The court says the police probe raises more questions than it answers.
09:31The loophole include delayed spot punch nama, unexplained police presence at the flat, questions of a reported bleeding and the
09:40absence of blood-stained earth.
09:42The Mumbai High Court also questioned the nature of Disha's injuries, noting that a fall from such a height did
09:48not result in fractures to the jaw or nasal bone.
09:51It added that the police suspected Disha's friend Rohan Rai, but they did not conduct the spot punch nama.
10:00The court has asked a senior CBI official to be appointed for investigation.
10:04The ruling says nobody will be treated as accused until reasonable offence is found.
10:10If a case is not made out and case is filed, the petitioner can appeal.
10:14The court has taken the whole complaint.
10:16The first thing, they have made all the documents, and they have made all the complaints.
10:21They have produced the CCTV, and they have also made the suicide theory of the complaint.
10:26The post-mortem report is broken.
10:34Disha's father, Satish Salayan, has welcomed the CBI probe.
10:54The Disha Sanyal case has also become a political battlefield.
10:58Her father had earlier alleged a link to Shiv Sena UBT leader Aditya Thakre allegations Thakre has denied.
11:06BJP MLA Ram Kadham has welcomed the court order, while NCPSP leader Supriya Sule has dismissed the renewed questions, saying
11:14she believed the matter was already over.
11:37I have no idea, because to the best of my knowledge, that case was over.
11:40I have no idea, I'll have to check and get back to you all.
11:45Years have passed.
11:46The questions have remained.
11:48Now the CBI has been asked to find the answers.
11:50Because for Disha Salayan's family, this is no longer about allegations of politics.
11:55It is about knowing what happened to their daughter.
12:07And joining me now is Satish Salayan, father of Disha Salayan joins me, along with advocate Nilesh Oza, who is
12:16the counsel for Mr. Salayan.
12:18And good to have both of you on the show.
12:21Satish Salayan ji, for the last few years, you have been fighting for your daughter.
12:28You claimed that you should come out and you don't believe that your daughter died because of her daughter's suicide.
12:45There was no foul play.
12:47What do you see in the court today's order of this order of the CBI, who do you see in
12:54the case of the CBI, who do you see in the case of the CBI?
12:58Satish Salayan ji, I think that the judge has given me the right, given me the right, given me the
13:05right, given me.
13:08Because the court has made it clear that no one can be accused at this stage.
13:14At this time, you cannot hold any attention to anyone.
13:19At this time, there is no evidence for anyone.
13:22It is clear that it is a foul play.
13:25The court has said that no one should be considered accused at this stage.
13:30How do you see it?
13:36Now, we can't say anything.
13:38When the CBI report comes, we can't say anything.
13:44I want to know that, Oja ji, how do you see it?
13:50You are a lawyer.
13:51How do you see it?
13:52Because the court has made it very clear.
13:54The court has said that at this time, it is a foul play.
13:59It will be wrong.
14:00Yes, there were some weaknesses in the investigation.
14:03Therefore, they are ordering this.
14:04But how do you see today's order?
14:34What has ordered you said?

15:53I don't want to know that the court has said that the statement will be F.I.R. register.
16:00If the F.I.R. register, they will give the names.
16:06They will give the names. You will not know that basic procedure.
16:10They will give the names and the base will be F.I.R. register.
16:22I don't want to glorify anyone.
16:27Oja Ji, you took the name of Ria Chakravarti.
16:32You were saying that he was in the murder.
16:36They have a closure of the CBI.
16:38Yes or no?
16:40You are saying that there is no evidence at this time.
16:44There will be an investigation.
16:46You know the law is innocent until proven guilty.
16:50Then you are saying that after this order,
16:53you will take the name of the U.R.
16:57Who did you see?
16:59Why are you giving the statement?
17:01Why did you give the name of Ria Chakravarti?
17:03Where is the CBI?
17:05The CBI has not accepted.
17:07In the CBI report, there was also an arrest warrant.
17:13The second thing.
17:14Ria Chakravarti, Narcotics Control Bureau,
17:17there is no evidence in the case today.
17:19So, our arrest is absolutely right.
17:21You are saying that both agents are working.
17:24This is our arrest.
17:25I am not an agent.
17:27I am not an agent.
17:28I am not an agent.
17:30I am not an agent.
17:30I am not an agent.
17:30I am saying that the court has not said that they have a foul play.
17:35They have said that the police need to...
17:37There were certain gaps in police probes.
17:39That day I have raised questions.
17:40But I am not saying that there is a foul play or murder.
17:44There is a fact, no.
17:46The court has not said that there is a murder of...
17:48That is the murder of Salihandr.
17:51What is your arrest?
17:55You are saying that.
17:58You are saying that.
17:58Yes.
17:59I am saying that.
18:01I am saying that.
18:02What is I saying that, Salihandr?
18:03I am saying that.
18:04What is I saying that?
18:06Salihandr, you are saying that.
18:07You have faith in the seat of the CB&R in the seat of the seat of the seat of
18:11the seat of the seat?
18:23Was there a request in the seat of the seat?
18:32I have written in the order that if you think that CBA's report is correct, then you can file a
18:35protest petition.
18:37Why are you asking such questions for your mind to satisfy your mind?
18:43No sir, I am going to go to the law.
18:46Innocent and proven guilty.
18:49You are a lawyer yourself.
18:50You are saying that the word foul play, which I have used the word,
18:55I have not said that there was foul play.
18:58They have questioned the investigation of the police, but not said foul play.
19:02I have ordered in front of me.
19:04You tell me, there is no proof as yet of foul play.
19:07That's all I am saying sir.
19:09Do you believe so or not?
19:12Okay, okay.
19:14Listen, once again, once again.
19:17I will tell you about the case law.
19:19Number one.
19:19When someone complains, they will write the complaint here.
19:25That is my proof.
19:27This person is accused.
19:28For me, I have charges.
19:31One thing.
19:32The other thing.
19:33The court.
19:34The court.
19:36The court.
19:37The court.
19:38The court.
19:39The court.

19:50The court.
19:52The court.
19:53The court.
19:54The court.
19:57The court.
19:58The court.
19:58The court.
19:58The court.
20:00The court.
20:01The court.

20:01The court.
20:02The court.
20:04The court.
20:05The court.
20:06The court.
20:09The court.
20:09the water will be a CBI investigation.
20:13Is it correct or not?
20:15The police have done a good investigation.
20:17There are 50 judgments of police investigation.
20:20The police don't do the same.
20:23When you do the same, you have a good number.
20:26Go to the same number.
20:28The same number is on CCTV footage.
20:31The police officer who is in the police,
20:35the police officer who is at the police police officer,
20:36The police had made a mistake.
20:42After that, the post-mortem report court said that we cannot keep the trust.
20:47They had to change the issue of the body.
20:52And after that,
20:54the way you're all alone from your heart.
20:58Sorry, sorry.
21:01One more thing.
21:25sir i will meet you in court i want to tell you this sir oja ji and salian ji i
21:30am sympathetic
21:31to your loss but i am a journalist here i am not here to run some kangaroo media trial mr
21:37roja i want to
21:38make it very clear this time we can't hold anyone here as you can hold anyone here as you can
21:46hold
22:09up
22:10you don't have to do it.
22:11Your conclusion is in your past.
22:13We are just fair people.
22:15We give them an interview.
22:18Strongman fantasy, intellectual dishonesty
22:20and sophistry of people.
22:22We don't give them a statement.
22:24We are living here.
22:28You want to go off air?
22:30Thank you, Nilesh Oja, Mr. Salian.
22:32Thank you very much for joining me.
22:33I want to get a sense, therefore.
22:35As you saw, this is getting acrimonious
22:37that was recorded earlier.
22:38Majid Mehman, Senior Advocate Supreme Court
22:41is joining us,
22:42former Member of Parliament also.
22:45Majid Mehman,
22:46how do you see
22:47what we just heard?
22:50The lawyers of Sati Salian
22:52are claiming victory
22:53based on the fact
22:54that there will now be a CBI probe.
22:57He's saying now Aditya Thakre
22:58will be booked.
22:59Do you believe that
23:01what the court has done today
23:03should lead us to that conclusion
23:06or not?
23:08Well, this development
23:10must be said to be
23:13partial success
23:14for the father of the deceased
23:16who has moved the court
23:19suggesting that the investigation
23:21conducted so far
23:23by local police
23:24was partisan
23:25and they were trying
23:26to probably cover up something
23:27maybe because of
23:28certain political influence.
23:30That is what his apprehension
23:31has been.
23:32The court has passed an order
23:34asking CBI to register FIR
23:37but at the same time
23:38court has also forewarned CBI
23:40not to name any accused person
23:43at the commencement stage
23:46until some positive
23:47satisfactory evidence
23:49is emerging
23:51against anybody
23:52for involvement
23:53in a serious crime
23:54like murder and rape.
23:55So, let me get that clear.
23:59There's a Mumbai police case
24:01which was investigated
24:03six years ago.
24:04Disha Salian committed suicide
24:06in June, July of 2020.
24:08We are now in August 2026.
24:11In that case
24:12the police said
24:14they found no foul play.
24:15Now, there will be
24:17a CBI inquiry
24:18that takes place.
24:20Presumably
24:20there will be an FIR
24:21that has to be registered.
24:23If the FIR is registered
24:24is it registered
24:25against unnamed persons
24:27or is it registered
24:28against specific persons?
24:29Is the father entitled
24:30to name
24:31let's say
24:32an Aditya Thakre
24:33in that FIR
24:34or has the court
24:35made it very clear
24:36no one can be accused
24:37at this stage?
24:39Correct.
24:40The FIR
24:40is going to be registered
24:42consequent upon
24:43the high puts
24:43in directions
24:44against unknown persons
24:46and then they would
24:47start commencing
24:48collecting evidence
24:49but I have my own
24:51reservations
24:51that in a case
24:53which is the incident
24:54which is more than
24:55six years old
24:56what new evidence
24:57are they expected
24:58to get?
24:59They may re-examine
25:00the post-mortem
25:02and medical report
25:03of the victim girl
25:04because if the
25:05accusations are
25:06of rape also
25:07and murder
25:08then naturally
25:10there has to be
25:11some reflection
25:11as far as the
25:13examination of body
25:14is concerned
25:15in this case
25:16it is alleged
25:17that the petitioner
25:19the father of the
25:20victim girl
25:21has alleged
25:22that the
25:22post-mortem
25:23was kept
25:24away from him
25:25and he had
25:25no access to that
25:26if that is so
25:28I think that
25:28it's something serious
25:30and let him have
25:31the access to
25:32post-mortem report
25:33and let his statement
25:34also be recorded
25:35as the direction
25:36of the high post goes
25:37but you see
25:39I doubt
25:39whether anything
25:41will turn out
25:41to turn this
25:43case upside down
25:44from a simple
25:45case of suicide
25:46to the case
25:47of murder
25:48and rape
25:49notwithstanding
25:50any political
25:51connections
25:52in the background
25:54as far as
25:55unless of course
25:56unless of course
25:57it is proven
25:57that the police
25:58had hidden
25:59certain material
26:00evidence
26:00am I correct
26:01that's what
26:02it's boiling
26:02down to
26:03did the police
26:04Mumbai police
26:05hide certain
26:05but if they
26:06hid it
26:07then new facts
26:08can come
26:08but in the
26:08absence of those
26:09facts
26:10you just heard
26:11the lawyer
26:11of Disha Salian's
26:14father
26:14virtually claiming
26:15that the
26:16court has said
26:17that there were
26:17suspicious
26:18circumstances
26:19and therefore
26:20he believes
26:21that they
26:22are right
26:23in claiming
26:24that this
26:25was a case
26:25of rape
26:26and murder
26:26would that
26:27be wrong
26:29interpretation
26:30of the
26:30court order
26:32Rajdeep
26:33it is something
26:33extremely serious
26:35and very difficult
26:36to digest
26:36that why
26:37did the
26:38father of
26:39victim girl
26:39have to wait
26:40for six years
26:41you ought to
26:42have rush to
26:43the court
26:43for this same
26:44prayer
26:44or for this
26:45non-low confidence
26:46on the
26:47investigating agency
26:48in the very
26:49first month
26:49or first couple
26:50of months
26:50of the
26:51investigation
26:51before the
26:52investigation
26:53would have
26:53concluded
26:54and before
26:54they would have
26:55filed any
26:56report of
26:56suicide and
26:57closing the
26:58case etc
26:58and waiting
26:59for such a
27:00long time
27:00you see
27:01evidence tends
27:02to evaporate
27:03evidence does
27:04not remain
27:05easily accessible
27:06if there is a
27:07long lapse of
27:08time
27:09which of course
27:10if you are
27:10commencing
27:11investigation
27:12for an
27:13incident which
27:13had occurred
27:14in June 2020
27:15you are not
27:16likely to get
27:17anything
27:17leading to
27:19truth
27:19because your
27:20investigation is
27:21a quest for
27:22truth
27:22and now it
27:23is very difficult
27:24for them to
27:25build up a
27:25case and
27:26turn it from
27:27suicide to
27:29rape and
27:30murder
27:30but the worry
27:32Mr. Mehman
27:33and you have
27:33been a politician
27:34as well that
27:34this case takes
27:35a political twist
27:36you see that's
27:37the concern
27:37a case which
27:39started off
27:40as you know
27:41everyone wants
27:42justice for
27:42Disha Salian
27:43we want her
27:44father to know
27:44the truth
27:45her family to
27:46know the truth
27:46but because
27:47there is so
27:47much of
27:48politics around
27:49it the worry
27:50is that the
27:50truth gets
27:51colored by the
27:51politics depending
27:52on which side
27:53you are you
27:54either say it's
27:55a case of
27:56suicide or it's
27:57a rape and
27:57murder no one
27:58is looking at
27:58the facts of
27:59the case
28:00you see for
28:01in legal
28:03criminal
28:04jurisprudence
28:05there is a
28:06vast difference
28:07between a case
28:08of suicide
28:09or a case
28:10of murder
28:11because you
28:12see the
28:13evidence required
28:14to even
28:15build up a
28:16case of murder
28:17has to be
28:18quite strong
28:19it can't be
28:20simply on
28:21conjectures
28:22and gestures
28:23or apprehensions
28:24of somebody
28:25who may have
28:26some kind of
28:27grudge or
28:27some kind of
28:28feelings against
28:29case x y
28:30or that
28:30therefore to
28:32build up a
28:32case of murder
28:33after six
28:34years I think
28:35it will be
28:35an uphill task
28:36for CDI
28:37even if they
28:37do their
28:38best in their
28:39skilled
28:39investigators
28:40and we
28:42only hope
28:43that Disha
28:44must get
28:44justice
28:45if there is
28:46any political
28:47touch in this
28:48case then that
28:49also has to
28:50be exposed
28:51at all costs
28:52and it is
28:53not that in
28:54past several
28:55issues several
28:56such cases where
28:57the investigation
28:58has been
28:59transferred from
29:00local police to
29:01CBI the
29:02upside down
29:03truth has
29:04come down
29:04and one does
29:05not know in
29:06this case how
29:07things are going
29:07to happen
29:09I'll leave it
29:09there I'll leave
29:10it there Mr.
29:11Memmin but I
29:12am glad that
29:12you've given us
29:13some context to
29:14the way this
29:15case has played
29:16out appreciate
29:16you joining us
29:18on this
29:19important case
29:21all we want is
29:22it shouldn't be a
29:23media trial
29:24remember what
29:24happened with
29:25Sushant Singh
29:25Rajput the
29:26manner in
29:27which the
29:27media trial
29:28was conducted
29:28against Rhea
29:29Chakravarti
29:30eventually the
29:32CBI filed a
29:33closure report
29:33and said there
29:34was no evidence
29:35at all of any
29:36foul play that's
29:37all that we can
29:38say those are
29:39the hard facts
29:40in the case of
29:41Sushant Singh
29:42Rajput in
29:43Disha Salian's
29:44case we'll wait
29:45to see what the
29:46CBI says in
29:48that case okay
29:49let me turn from
29:50there to our
29:51other big story
29:52because now
29:53there is a
29:53twist to the
29:54Nepal story
29:55the flood
29:56tragedy that
29:57has claimed
29:57more than
29:581200 lives
29:59with accusations
30:00that China
30:01could also
30:02have had a
30:03role in
30:04that the
30:05Chinese have
30:06hidden the
30:06number of
30:07deaths that
30:08have taken
30:08place in
30:09Tibet
30:09I'm going to
30:10come to that
30:11in a moment
30:11but first
30:12our ground
30:13report
30:14because a
30:14week after
30:15the floods
30:15ravaged Nepal
30:16the search for

33:20The road access to the core area of the mudslide hit Gairong Port in southwest China's Shizang
33:27autonomous region has been restored after days of round-the-clock repair work.
33:33The Nepal government has urged the world for help and many nations including India are
33:38helping but Nepal needs more aid assistance and prayers with Ashutosh Mishra Nepal Bureau
33:45Report India Today.
33:51Okay let me go to my first guest on that because as I said there is now growing concern that
33:58Tibetans are expressing that the number of Tibetans missing in the flash floods the
34:03numbers are not coming out because China is not revealing them.
34:07Lopsang Sange joining me now he is the former prime minister of the Tibetan government in exile
34:15appreciate Mr. Sange you joining us. Tell us this Himalayan tragedy thousands of people dead in and
34:24around Nepal. There are concerns that you and others are expressing that many people have died in
34:30Tibet but the numbers are being played down by Beijing. What can you tell us about the casualties
34:36inside Tibet at the moment?
34:40Yeah we see that there's a lot of damages that you know also have occurred in in Tibet and you
34:47know at
34:48least you know if not 200 at least 100 plus Tibetans have died. This we know from the office itself
34:55a lot of
34:55staff members died in the at that office which is the biggest airport but the Chinese government has shut down
35:02the internet and we don't have access to local people. Fortunately the first 24 hours we did get
35:07access but since then they've shut it down. This is a classic Chinese government move. Whenever there's a
35:13protest in Tibet in a village or two first thing they do is shut down. The fact that they are
35:17not allowing
35:18journalists to go to that area or UN inspectors to go to the area or you know hydro experts to
35:25go to the
35:25area clearly indicate that they're hiding something. So so you're telling me you've had no communication
35:31with people in Tibet in Lhasa at all after the first day to gather just the scale of the
35:38damage. Are you saying that at this stage you've not been able to establish any kind of contact since the
35:44first day when the floods took place there?
35:49Yes the first 24 hours we could get access you know through people in Nepal and through
35:54the border areas and after 24 hours internet is shut down there is no access so Chinese government
36:00is definitely hiding something. You know you're saying that the Chinese government is hiding something
36:07that's a very serious charge you're you're making. You're telling me that China is not telling the
36:12full truth of what happened on the Chinese side during these flash floods.
36:19Yeah and there's nothing surprising you know the you know remember the pandemic happened right you know
36:26COVID the origin of the COVID you know still what happened uh still it's in China. The Chinese government
36:33is not sharing the data even with WHO you know more than seven million people died all over the world
36:3920 billion dollars damages have caused to the whole world but in the past days the origin of COVID.
36:46You know in a in a recent interview also Mr. Sangye you've uh said that the Chinese government
36:51mess must be held accountable for these flash floods now the the belief is this was a glacial
36:57icebreak probably that led to the floods it's a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions but can
37:04that be blamed on the Chinese. Why are you blaming the Chinese government for this natural disaster?
37:11Yes natural disaster can be triggered by artificial action or human action and a lot of roads are being
37:17built you know in that area and the railway line is being built that is the biggest you know
37:23drive port that they're building and clearly all this drilling you know uh that's happening in the
37:28mountainous area it causes tremor and the glaciers break because there was a tremor and that's why
37:35there can be uh you know a direct relationship between the break of the glaciers and the damage
37:41it caused downstream and then particularly where is the alert system you know the Chinese government
37:49is supposed to have whole army the whole satellite to navigate you know the glaciers and the glacier lakes.
37:57So you are saying that the kind of construction activity the hydropower plants the highways
38:03that the Chinese uh government is carrying on this in this region is making them far more is making
38:10this Himalayan ecosystem on the Chinese side far more vulnerable to these kind of disasters am i correct?
38:17Oh yes yes that area has the biggest construction of both highways and railway
38:26you know but is is one of the real concerns also that there is so little coordination or communication
38:32between Beijing Kathmandu and New Delhi so therefore everyone seems to operate in silos many believe
38:39that if there were early warnings those warnings were missed because there is no communication
38:44between the three governments do you agree?
38:49Yes but then Beijing is more responsible because you know they sit on the top of Tibet is the water
38:57tower of Asia where all the glaciers are and conveniently they have not signed the UN Convention on water
39:02sharing thereby they are saying we are not accountable responsible for what happens to people downstream.
39:09Is there therefore a sense you are getting that this is the wake-up call that Beijing needed for a
39:14long time
39:14that Beijing cannot operate in this secrecy in these silos because you're saying they sit at the top of the
39:21mountain so they are largely responsible to ensure that the other countries the other states get a sense
39:27of what is happening um yes i think it's not a wake-up call for Beijing didn't know it it's
39:35a wake-up call for all
39:36the neighboring countries including Nepal Bhutan India you know and Bangladesh you know all the neighboring
39:42countries should say we are the one who suffer more from all these you know floods and earthquakes that
39:50happens because of Chinese government action in Tibet you know but the Chinese will say this is part of
39:56their modernization program for the entire region this is the development that they are doing in
40:01Chinese Tibet you ask the Chinese they say we are developing Chinese Tibet like never before
40:08yes you know you should listen to Chinese environmentalists you know they have said we have
40:12to protect Tibetan plateau for their own sake this is the water tower of Asia and the Yangtze River
40:19Yellow River all the major rivers of Asia you know many of them flow from Tibet you know and Tibetan
40:25plateau is so fragile and the Chinese environmentalists say we have to keep it as it is don't modernize it
40:32or
40:33don't bring development and harm the Tibetan plateau so do you believe there is that consciousness on Beijing's
40:41side that these environmentalists their their concerns are being are being reflected because these large
40:47projects are carrying on they carry on through these very vulnerable ecosystem as I said do you believe
40:53that there is a realization after these flash floods
40:58yes China claims to be so environmentally friendly they are the biggest manufacturer of solar panels you know
41:05and EV cars and on the other hand they have you know Tibet as a plateau as a you know
41:13a very fragile
41:14ecological system that they you know are exploiting and then you know uh harming the neighboring countries
41:21including you know their own people Chinese and then obviously harm mostly in Tibet
41:29Mr. Lang Seng Songbe thanks very much Sangye for for joining me and giving us your viewpoint from a
41:36Tibetan perspective that's a very serious charge that we just heard to suggest that the Chinese in some
41:42way are responsible for what's happening in Nepal I want to therefore go to someone else who's joining me
41:47Eric Solheim is former undersecretary general of United Nations President Europe Asia Center seen as one of the
41:53world's leading original environmental politicians the green politicians Mr. Solheim good to see you
42:00you've been a former minister in Norway as well uh I want to ask you uh at the very outset
42:05how do you see
42:06this Himalayan disaster uh because Nepal is saying it's the result of climate action you heard a Tibetan guest
42:13there seemingly suggesting China is responsible do you believe that this is actually a climate change issue
42:21that ecologically sensitive areas like the Himalayas are now in real danger of these mega disasters
42:29I think there is no doubt that this is amplified by climate change of course the immediate cause of
42:38this seems to have been rocks and ice slipping from a glacier in a massive scale forcing water
42:46before it and also of course cooling down and also of course melting down so is that like a tsunami
42:54an
42:54enormous amount of water but this is caused by the warmer weather uh which makes these kind of uh
43:02happenings in in in glaciers much much much more likely so yes indeed this is a very very strong warning
43:08of
43:08the perils of climate change but as I said my earlier guest from Tibet said that he believes there's a
43:17lot of
43:17ecological destruction going on because of the construction activity the hydropower the highways
43:22the tunnels that are being built all of them are damaging the ecologically sensitive Himalayas do you believe it
43:29goes beyond climate change it goes to the destruction of these mountain sides how do you
43:34look at this entire issue of development and modernization versus environment in these areas
43:41and how should India see it because it's happening to me there is no connection between these development
43:47and and and this incident this incident in all likelihood was caused by a major
43:55event in in the glaciers and there's no connection with development when of course
44:00Tibet as a part of China is developing very very fast but China these days is probably the most
44:06environmentally conscious country on planet earth which takes a lot more care for the environment than
44:12we do in the west so we should not run around trying to cause difficulties to the country the
44:18more India and Nepal and China can work together the more likely we are not to stop climate change but
44:25to
44:25be able to to to to keep more warnings and then it's happened because if we if we can predict
44:31this kind of
44:32events and we can warn people of course there will be less uh less people dying I mean we all
44:39know this
44:39fantastic event where 900 people 900 students were saved in a school in Nepal because the headmaster got
44:48the warning and acted absolutely immediately which is very very rare and got the children out of the way
44:55otherwise these 900 children today have been all perished so you're saying don't link the construction
45:00that's going right across the Himalayas from China to India with what happened uh you're linking it much more
45:06to climate change am I correct absolutely this is directly linked to climate change I mean
45:13for sure there may always be issues to discuss when it comes to the um uh
45:18developments in Tibet in China Tibet or or in Nepal or or in India and China is for example
45:24constructing a huge hydropower plant in uh in Tibet but that's very very far from this glacier
45:31so there can be absolutely no connection between that hydropower plant and and this event
45:36so what you're really calling for from what I can see is greater coordination between governments of
45:40China Nepal and India have a joint climate action plan something you're saying that has not happened
45:46so far uh therefore we have to hope that this triggers that kind of coordination
45:55look there are two issues we need to fight very very hard to reduce the impact of climate change
46:00that is a global issue which involves everyone Europe United States everyone because only globally we can
46:07really fight climate change and then the more we're able to predict these kind of events the more easy
46:13it will be to make warnings to people and if people are warned they can get out of the way
46:19if people have been warned at the time of the Asian tsunami in 2004 I was spending a lot of
46:25time in
46:25Sri Lanka those days if people have been warned they could easily have walked away from the disaster
46:30zone and tens of thousands of lives have been been saved so if India Nepal China but of course also
46:38Bhutan Pakistan other nations can work together they will be much better prepared to make predictions
46:44bring together the best scientists from all nations so that we can make sure that we are prepared for this
46:51in
46:51in in the future which brings me to a final question given your long-standing advocacy on
46:56environmental protection on renew emphasis on renewable energy what should be the international
47:01response beyond just sending emergency aid preparing for the future to make sure that this will not happen
47:10again next year or or or in 10 years time and the more we can predict these slides from the
47:16glaciers
47:17uh the the more we will be able to save save lives of course the relationship between India and China
47:23has
47:23been very poor for for for some time but it's now uh rapidly improving Prime Minister Modi and President Xi

47:35so there are very encouraging signals that the relationship will improve and then it will also be easier to work
47:42together uh to get the best science to prevent such uh such disasters in the future just in conclusion
47:49i want to quote what Balendra Shah Nepal's Prime Minister said the rapid melting of glaciers
47:54catastrophic mountain tsunamis are direct consequences of global climate change major industrial emitters
48:00such as China the world's top emitter United States at number two India at number three have a historical
48:06responsibility to compensate vulnerable nations like Nepal do you agree absolutely but we need to get
48:15it right i mean the u.s emissions per capita after today are 20 times Indian emissions per capita after
48:21today so of course United States Europe and Japan and the early industrialized nations are those who
48:28should really compensate the nation like like like Nepal they're not likely to do it but that that would
48:34be the morally right thing right thing to do okay i appreciate you joining us there Mr. Solaim
48:40clearly what has happened in Nepal this enormous tragedy should be a wake-up call for several nations
48:47when it comes to climate action thank you very much for joining me get real India a four-time
