00:00Hey Mark, three years ago this was just an idea. Today it is £150,000 of pure joy
00:09waiting to happen here in Mount Wise. And I could not be prouder to stand here and
00:17hand it over to you, the children of Newquay. But before I say anything else I just want to
00:24speak directly to some very special people here today and that is you guys, the children of Newquay.
00:30We had such strong representation from the children of Newquay both individually,
00:38directly to me, through parents, through our consultation and indeed at the schools
00:41at Newquay Junior and Trinance and I thank them for getting involved. We sat down and we talked
00:49and we listened and you guys told us exactly what you wanted from this play park and your
00:57ideas came across in such honesty and such clarity and I want to thank you for trusting
01:03us to listen and we did listen. What stands here behind us today is a result of that. We
01:11built this for you guys. That's what makes today so special. This isn't a play park built
01:18by councillors for children. It's built by children for children. That councillors are
01:26obviously lucky enough to be involved and I can see a couple of councillors here saying
01:29happy birthday to Sandy, Councillor Carter over there. It's been a journey. This once tired,
01:36poorly maintained patch of land has been given a whole new lease of life. Newquay Town Council
01:42fought to devolve this site from Cornwall Council. That's no easy feat I can assure you. It was
01:48a long process because we believe that this community deserved it and I'm proud to say that
01:53every penny of the £150,000 that this play park cost us came without touching a single penny
02:01of taxpayers money. £50,000 came from the Boardmasters Foundation and I want to thank Boardmasters for
02:08that contribution. It's that generosity that really makes Boardmasters leave a lasting legacy on our
02:19town and I thank them and I see Ruth here today so thank you. The other £100,000 came from
02:26the
02:26Community Infrastructure Levy and that is a developer funding pot and that's exactly what that funding pot
02:32is here for. It's to improve the facilities of this town. Mount Wise is one bright thread in a bigger
02:40picture.
02:43Newquay's green-led Town Council ongoing commitment to children and young people. We're working to bring
02:50the youth centre into local hands and grow what that offers. Helping our young people see real long-term
02:55meaningful futures right here in Newquay with our empowering Newquay's future events. Our wonderful
03:01library has been delivering the summer reading challenge and that's had record numbers and our
03:06stay and play sessions throughout the summer have been opening doors to more families across the town.
03:12So behind every one of these our officers are out there in the community making it happen
03:16and this play park stands proudly alongside that work and that commitment to our children.
03:22And speaking of the officers today would not exist without them. I want to say a huge and special thanks
03:29thanks to our estates manager Joe.
