00:00Putra Jaya has dismissed a claim that Malaysia will hire about 200,000 Bangladeshi workers over the next six months,
00:07saying it did not reflect Bangladesh's official position.
00:11Government spokesman Fahmy Fadzil said in a press conference after a cabinet meeting today
00:15that the claim came from a junior minister, adding that he had discussed the matter with the Human Resources Minister.
00:22Yesterday, Bangladeshi local government, rural development and cooperatives junior minister, Mayor Shai Alam,
00:28claimed the recruitment would begin in phases from late September.
00:32This followed a meeting between Malaysia's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Shuhada Osman,
00:36and local government, rural development and cooperatives minister, Abdul Moyin Khan.
00:41Separately, Fahmy addressed United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' concerns
00:46that Myanmar remained unsafe for refugees to return.
00:49He stated that Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan had confirmed that 1,476 refugees in the first phase
00:56had signed documents stating they were returning voluntarily.
00:59More than 10,000 Myanmar refugees had been detained by immigration,
01:03with 5,000 screened by the Home Ministry and their names sent to the Myanmar Embassy.
01:08Fahmy noted that the Myanmar government had agreed to receive 1,476 people from that list,
01:14while Wismaputra had assured that they would be safe upon returning.
01:17Yesterday, UNHCR said ongoing armed conflict and violence across Myanmar
01:21meant there could be no safe, dignified and sustainable voluntary return of refugees.
